osamarasheed 09-28-2006, 09:26 AM hello all
we have an idea to make documantry film and our thinking is to make it in tow deffrent cameras, one is s16mm camera and the other digital camera.
and in the last project we had bad experiance in the deffrenty of the formats.
so my quastion is :
what is the best digital camer that we can work and mix it with s16mm camera with less problems?
* frame rate we wanna to work in is 24fps

When you say digital, do you mean solely DV? I would honestly say that the Panasonic AG-HVX2000 would probably be your best bet, although it's HD digital. Right now the HVX2000 is a fairly budget conscious camera, and it should be fairly cheap to rent. It also shoots 24 frames at 1080 P, which is pretty close to 16mm.
http://www.cinematechnic.com/super_16mm/resolution_of_super_16mm.html you might want to read the info about the comparison. Obviously the main problem is going to be lighting for HD as opposed to 16mm. Lighting for digital is usually more tricky (I'm sure you already know that, I'm just trying to raise awareness of the possibility the you might need more lights to expose the scene properly). Anyways, I hope that helps. I might be wrong, but that's the cheapest and best I can think of right now.

Unfortunately, after reading it several times, it isn't much more clear, I'm sorry. The D20 would work for you wouldn't it? I was just assuming since you're shooting with 16mm you are on a limited budget. If you can afford the D20 then I would just use that.

but what i would like to say is the cameras which rely improve its work and fit when you mix it whith the s16mm format. so it was just siuped sejustion from me! i am sorry.
but i just wandering if i uose digital betacam"or any other betacam format", or hd cameras, and if hd which is the relly working with s16mm format, i mean which have the nearest quality of lens and depthe of field which it is fit!
i hope it is more clear

If you want to really match S16 you're going to probably need to go HD. If you want to closely match the S16 lens length/DOF etc you need to go with a 2/3 Inch chip cameara. Something like a:
Varicam
F900
XDCam
Viper
Silicon Imager
RED
However with the exception of the last two you're looking at anywhere from $650-$2000 daily rates. But you'll save on film and processing. If you're really on a budget and need to shoot before April/May of 07 I would look at Silicon Imaging and their SI camera. It's a 2/3" HD camera and relatively cheap. After April/May give RED (red.com) a look.
Of course as you very well know though, you'll never be able to seamlessly mix the two.

Red has a S35mm sized sensor.
2/3inch is still a little smaller than S16 and I think you'll see unless you especially take care of it (shoot open, long lenses, whenever possible).
Why do you want to mix formats?

The red will accept both super 35 and super 16 lenses.

The red will accept both super 35 and super 16 lenses.
Oh yes, forgot. But doesn't it take just a 2k window then? Well, should still be enough to match 16mm :)

Yes, I think you are right. Because the circle thrown is a bit smaller because it's 16mm, it has to be 2k windowed. But hey, 2k is pretty darn good.:scream:

Why do you want to mix formats?
: coz we wanna to work in countries like Iraq and with digitak camera it is esier to cary and the tape cary more time. and you dont wanna blackbox to change the films always. so we need fast shoting prosses. but in the same time we need to shot in s16 when we are in relax locations.
and thanks alot for your replaies. and i will chek Red coz i know it is really good but i am waiting the other lensses for it!
