Im sure many of you have a simular problem, but as for me Im looking to purchase a student copy of a render plugin for rhino sometime in the next week or two.I've gotten to a stage where my flamingo renders are holding me back. Ive also tried exporting models from rhino to 3ds max and other modellers but as Ive tried and heard generally Its a pretty slow process and a pain. Also 3ds max costs a fortune.

As far as I know there is a few options but I like the idea of a plugin cause its nice and fast.
Heres what im considering:

Vray plugin http://www.asgvis.com/

maxwell plugin http://www.maxwellrender.com/

Brazil for rhino plugin (but I doubt it will be released soon)

Im just wondering what you guys would recommend. Also how would you go about getting these plugins in australia.I havent found a reseller for any.

Of course i can't say anything for Brazil since i haven't tried it, but for the few renderers i have tried (of the Maxwell and Vray you mentioned) Vray is the definitely the winner for me. Material Editor on both are not the most sweetest things on earth, but definitely doable after a few tries, though i would myself like to learn much better the terms used there (Vray got it better handled) and also documentation and tutorials -wise Vray seems to be much better and very noob-friendly. What does it for me the most is the speed and Vray is incredibly fast, while Maxwell takes much longer and Vray does really a profession job, just a few tweaks and you got sweet sweet results fast. On the downside the price is pretty salty, but hopefully there's some changes on that when the v.4 for rhino gets released. Nothing else to say at the moment, dissapointed with Maxwell, but truly in love with Vray. Totally got me inspired with using Rhinoceros once again and for the first time in my history i can come up with so truly nice renders without much hassle.

Have you considered MODO?

They do offer a student version on their site.

I have seen both, VfR and Maxwell.... Well, it depends what you are looking for...

-If you are looking for speed, VfR is faster than maxwell

-If you are looking for light effects/grain... Maxwell is best

-If you are looking for vareity type of materials... Both are best

Unfortunately, there's no demo version for maxwell :(
VfR's do have demo, and its very nice but only drawback is the material panel, it can lead to confusion sometimes.

For Vray the price is not so bad for me,the student edition is $250 US. I cant really wait for brazil/fryrender or have time to export to Max (even though I have the student copy) . Its more an issue of time for me than anything else. Vray looks like a winner to me.

Maxwell demo. ...and you will need the official "rhinoll" plugin to use it.
Fantastic renders..but you do need some cpu power for this sucker.
From the {E}vermotion site.

Ahh so there is one! Ok so im trying to get the demo working but I get this error when I click render after loading it any thoughts?

[EDT] It looks like I must use maxwells materials instead of default rhino ones.

Do you have the official rhino plugin installed-is it installed/loade via the plugin manager in rhino?
So assuming you set up a rhino scene...you have two options.
only export the mxs..rhino scene.this an option.you can then close rhino if you want.
Open it in Maxwell Render...render.
or...just click render in rhino.
Suggestion setup a folder for your maxwell only renders..mxs and mxi lighting files.
~materials wise you do not have to have maxwell specific used...in fact i loaded a vray setup and maxwell defaulted to basic colors.
basic rhino stuff will show up just fine:)

Vray is really great for sure....Maxwell is too slow for any serious use...
....hopefully Brazil2 is going to be good enough to give some competition to Vray.
