I must second that. I would even just love some info on how they are made.
I'm not a master in matte painting so I'm not the best person in the world to advice you.
You can Photoshop or Painter they are both great for digital painting and compositing, I don't know any book about matte painting but I belive that the bases are very similiar with the traditional painting, lightning and shading ones. Of course that you have to adapt you real world concepts to digital procedures.
You can check some of this sites, I'm not sure that they have tutorial on mate painting but I think worth a look.
I think that's all I have, I know that is litlle, but is a start.
If I find more resources I let you all know.
and I hope this may help you. ;)

there are no tutorial i think
the best way to start is to mix photos
show them to someone (like in cg talk)
and if no one notice the trick than your first matte painting is
the best tutorial is looking at everithing (how does the light
pass through the tree, how does the mist stay upon a mountain
how does the sun reflection of a window goes on a wall
e ve ri thing.
try to reproduce it . Every "weapon" are authorized paint, 3d
you will look like a complete idiot ( i do ) when you will stering
at some detail of a building in the middle of the street but
thx for the link diogo:beer:
