Imagine i'm using photoshop and I am making a texture for a Person how do i make some spots darker than others by using just one texture
like this http://sv1.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/attachment.php?s=&postid=188828

the way that guy made that texture... it looks like one map but he got the tips yellow and the butt yellow

you can make it a ePoly for example.. select the faces (his butt for example).. detach them. apply a bitmap/uv map to the butt and then a body bitmap/uvmap. that's how i do it anyway.. but then again i'm a noob :-)

yoll need more than that to make that kind of textures.

::first go to leigh´s website http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/ and get the texturing for dummies tutorial. ::

::then go to www.uvmapper.com . its a great app for unwraping models. the site has very good tutorials. max has its own unwrapping tools , but i find better results with this program, and its good for newbies.::

UVMAPPER needs .obj models...so get the obj2max and max2obj plugins to reimport your mapped model.

which reminds me.. is there any chance you can post a workin version for the obj2max. i recently tried max2obj.. that version didn't work (i'm using max5) .. someone pointed out to hab's site and said to use the r4 one. which worked, but his obj2max on their doesn't initialize for me :[.

i found Objimp42 which imported obj's fine. guess it'll do the trick for now. although if i'm not mistaken obj2max has options right as you import..which would be nice :D

This reminds me, if I can hijack this thread - what's the best file type, (overall), to save texture maps in?

i would say tga

Targa? Sounds good! Does PNG work fairly well for 3D stuff or is that just good for bitmaps imported into Flash?

i believe tga uses less compression than png so you're looking at higher quality.... png/tiff should be okay i think
