View Full Version : WIP- Ship with MAYA
stelhar_1999 01-31-2003, 08:34 PM I'm modeling this ship and I would like some feedback on this. Thanks,
I use MAYA and the whole thing is modelled with polygons so far.

basically, you need some crap on it. needs detail. one detail i see missing are the sails. when i see ships like this, i always think of barrels being on it, maybe barrels of rum ,but still, there are barrels on it.....and.....ropes, ropes are good too.

I' have build a few, like barells, as for the sails they are up next along with the ropes, and much later (!!!) the texturing part!!!!!!
I have to say that the file size limit is rather small for showing details in one picture!

it's looking alright so far, but there are a few things that dont feel right about it. I am not a pro on ships, but it seems like it should be wider. perhaps altogether, or fatter in the middle. Also, try making the back of the ship wider than the front end. It seems to look more like titanic's proportions than a sailing ship. try making more curvature on the top also... maybe this ref will help

Thanks for the input, and I think you are right about the middle of the ship, it should be a little wider there, I'll see what I can do at this point(!)
Hey isn't that WASA in the picture you posted? A swedish ship which on his first day of voyage sunk in the harbor?

Looks good, but my eyes wanna see some ropes wrapped around all those smooth posts. The ref pic looked very detailed, not many smooth surfaces on the boat but lots of debree, but you where probly already doing that :D
nice work

Just put up the sails, and added some details, as for the ropes they are coming soon, I want to make them as realistic as I can.

still think it needs to be wider in the center. If it were my model, i would go back and fix that, and go from there. I still think it looks like titanic with sails instead of smokestacks......:buttrock: :airguitar
also, i would like to see you bend the ship, so that it resembles more of a banana than that straight look you have going now.

I agree with oracrest, the ship looks far too modern, like an oil tanker almost. It should be wider and lower in the middle, like that refrence picture.

Here is a render showing a little more, I changed the shape of the ship so it doesn't look like an oil tanker (I'll post a top wireframe to see the shape)
I didn't post for that long because I had other stuff to do!
check it out here

This is an old render scene a few faults are corrected I'll post a newer render in a while
The ship's form is inspired form am early 20th century ship which won a contest in America
