View Full Version : Another character from my short film: "the plumber"

Antropus

Another character from my short film: the plumber!

It's my "almost realistic puppet". The style of character is non totally realistic (realistic textures in a "quasi-real" face), like my another post: Beautiful "old" Lady (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35364&perpage=15&pagenumber=10).
No textures yet (exception for the eyes). A lot of work to do with edge loops.

I hope you enjoy and gimme some comments

Well, no more comments??? Come on!

...some adjustments in model (edge loops, eye color etc) and my very first texture test (painted in about 10 minutes in photoshop).

NO BUMPS
NO SPECULAR MAP
NO TRANSPARENCY MAP
NO EYEBROWS YET (just references).
NO PLUMBER CAP

The style is (like my old lady) "realistic cartoon", of course...

I hope you enjoy :wavey:

i just gotta say wow sure he isn't like a realistic hcaracter, but his personality and appeal just jumps off the screen at your. I tell you if you can pull off the animation as well as you captured the "character" then he will literaly feel real in all its sense

great work

WOW! what amazing characters you are creating, and BEAUTIFUL textures. I never thought you could make anything better than the gorgeous(!) old lady, but he just jumps off the screen at me, really connects, the eyes are great, the positioning aswell as the textures. You really have created characters rather than models.

WELL DONE! :bounce:

Nice cap, by the way. With one of your cool textures it will be really great!
And something else: the old Lady will get some more hair, will she? Those "Lockenwickler" (don't know the english name, those colored rolls in her "hair") look a bit lost at the moment... ;)

Wow this looks really great!!! :applause:
i have a few questions if you don't mind

What did you use for the refelection in the eyes? HDRI or raytrace or what?

And how did you do the skin shader , got any tips for a nice skin shader in Max?? there are some tutorials for maya , but not for a shader in max

And also , what did you use for the eyebrows and eyelashes , shag:fur?

Anyway great model , he's really got character , and that's hard to find in cg humans

Antropus,

Good work. You certainly are one of those people that has much passion in your work and the models I am seeing.

As far as critique is concerned, I would personally watch the fading of the part of the chin that would possess a beard if the character had one. Good contrast, but a bit too unrealistic.

When this character was developed at the beginning, I noticed a wrinkle behind his head that was certainly strange. If this was fixed, disregard my comments.

The hat certainly is created well and your granny character in the past was absolytly amazing.

I'm watching out for you and the next huge creations. Keep up the good work!

mexus
02-04-2003, 08:35 PM
I did not mention the bottom lip of the character. It's comparison to the top lip is quite drastic. Usually, yes.. the bottom lip is lighter than top in darker skinned people. I would darken it a bit on the outer edge towards the inside (inside as light as is now.)

Thank you guys!

Some information:

- Software: 3DSMAX 5.0

- Texture size: 3000x1500 pixels (for extreme closes!)

- The eyebrows (rendered splines) and eyelashes (opacity maps) still WIP (just for reference).

The skin will receive many adjustments (pores, wrinkles and asymmetry).

- The Plumber is the main character of my short movie.

- The eyes have raytraced reflections with NO HDRI. Just my own dome light with 64 spot lights + 3 omni lights (key).

- The character IS NOT a realistic model (no way)! It has my own "realistic cartoon style" (like old lady, but with more realistic proportions). The lips are my option because I think it looks more cartoon this way and... well, my reference have a nice and pink inferior lip:

Really Good Work man! I love the attention to detalis that you posses.. it really makes a difference in wheteher you're working your butt off or not, and it pays! It looks awesome. At first i had a little problem with the eyelids... i thought they where too simple compared to the rest of him, and according to the wireframe, it looks like you might want some more info in there, if anything, for animation. But looking at it now, it has come a long ways and I hope everything turns out as you expect it! Keep up the good work man!:applause:

Looks great, remember to put some stains on that boot from chemicals a plumber uses.. gotta love em spills!

cuse

thats one shiny boot... surely he would use a tough black leather boot, steel caps maybe? would give you a good opportunity to have some of the steel showing from wear on the boot?

anyway, looks great, think the pants on the outside would be more likely.

I stopped posting in the 3DOn for thinking a work of this level, done with so much dedication and in highlight on five greatest forum/sites related to 3D world, deserves to be leaning. My work, unhappily, is more recognized out of my country. It's unjust to have the most accessed posts in the 3DOn and the whole recognition that I am receiving and not have my work put in the homepage of the 3DOn! I seek sponsors and support, so that I can conclude my short film. Who could offer some help, doesn't make it. Just it. :thumbsdow

I believe that definitively my work began to be a great inconvenience for some people...I can be wrong...

I always thank to people like you, that besides they have a very good work, knows how to value the other people's work.

Otherwise, my work can be seen here and in another forums around the world.

Time for updates :)

Some adjustments in all maps, including specular (color/intensity), bumps (more wrinkles and pores on nose and face), color and incandescence (for a little fake SSS). I add more eyelid hairs. More yellow on eye map (for more natural look). More dark skin.
I think the "plastic" look almost go away.

I hope you enjoy.

Yes it's much better.Less plastic look.I must say that your Old lady character is top three or so of all characters I have seen. This guy and the other older guy are now getting closer to her in overall look and appeal. Keep tweaking,it getting close.
Yes I must show some of my characters too Antropus,in a couple months, when NDA are lifted, the project is almost finished.then I can show.:)
But in the meantime ,please show more of your work,it is wonderful.

Wonderful creation Antropus.

I like the progression. There is a very fine line in-between very good work and great work.I like the fact that you go that extra mile to get your work to the great level. The extra attention to details are what seperates, and you show that in your work. This praticular character is almost there.

Not as Out of this World as the "Beautiful" old Lady, but what is......:)

Keep on fine tuning,it is very close. The last up-dates were very positive.Perhaps a touch of age,an added wrinkle or blemish, age spot, mole,a more uneveness could add even more to him?

Well just a couple minor thoughts. All in all a Fantastic creation.Well done.Really fine tuned art.

Wow!!!! About 4 months without posting anything.
Hey, I have some good news. A lot of progress with shaders, environment and good progress with my facial rigging.
My website is updated and now I have a dedicated site for my short movie.

Please visit: http://www.antropus.com

For now, this is the very first rendered animation for this character showing my facial rigging system at work. This animation was done very quickly by Marcos Pinto, my friend here in my local work. I hope you enjoy the videos.

ps.: yes, I noticed some problems involving the neck and other little skin weight adjustments. In this version, the tongue still didn't exist and the shaders of the interior of the mouth were temporary.

Wow.

The facial rigg is unbelievable! I noticed some mel scripts in there and the setup in general.. what about when his head is turning, how would you constrain his eyes to the camera?

Very interesting facial rigg setup.

Any tips on how you did this?
Are you using Maya?

Many thanks,

yep, this rigg is based on cane-toad method for "arcs" and I'm using set driven + blend shapes (only to add details like wrinkles and some custom expressions, all linked to set driven keys.

More information about all process (in portuguese yet, sorry) and more videos (making of) can be found here:

This is absolutely amazing... I would love to pick you brain for a few days :buttrock:
Man I wish I could read Portuguese!!!. I was wondering if you would help out somebody that loves rigging?? I would love to see how you did a lot of this. Do you have any special techniques you use? I noticed by browsing the 3d4all forum that you were painting weights in a Way lower res than the final. I didn't understand the text, but how do you do that??? I am in complete AWE over what you have achieved here.

I was very impressed of the video showing how easy you could manipulate the facial expression of the plumber, it's very inspiring and I really want to learn how to do something similar as it's the coolest stuff I've seen since I started visiting places like this some years ago. I haven't read all the thread yet so this might have been asked before, but can you tell us if there's any particular articles, books or tutorials you've read on this subject? Also I wonder, did you use only bones or do you use morphing too for the small wrinkles?
