Has anyone run into problems editing splines (specifically bezier) in c4d causing the application to suddenly crash? This has been happening quite a bit for me. I'm running a quad, 9.6 mograph all that... and the scene is quite simple.

Yes. If you double click a point to bring up the Values and Tangents dialogue, Cinema crashes every time for me. Maxon knows about this particular issue.

If you click on a spline point and then click it again, it may crash before the dialogue even appears.

Maxon's solution when I contacted them is to use Software shading, which sucks.

My solution has been to exclusively use the rectangle selection key command to select spline points.

This made me cry so many times..........

If it only occurs in OpenGL then chances are it's to do with your drivers. Try updating to the latetst drivers (or if you're using the latest then sometimes it helps to roll back to the last stable drivers).

For me, my ATI drivers are 100% up to date.

Maxon told me it's a known issue they hope to resolve with the next update.

It may also be a problem with imported splines.
If this is the case, try using the Reset System function on the splines, maybe that helps

^^^ As far as I can tell, yes.

You can still use Open GL for shading but you need to be careful with the settings. I have the nVidia card so your experience may be different but you can try the following settings which solved the problem for me.

monster ... I have the same settings and no crashing.

^^^ Intel. I have a hunch it's a PPC think. In fact, I sort of hope so, that way I won't have any troubles with my new machine. :D

Strange that so many people expreience this... I use Cinema4D since several years on changing Windows versions, but it NEVER crashed while editing splines. In fact, the only crashes I experienced were due to Win98SE (long time ago) or beta versions of some plugins.

Jack

There is a known crash bug caused by manipulating splines on Mac in software shading mode. We already fixed that for the next version.

Did you mean OpenGL shading mode?

Srek - your information conflicts what has been posted about the bug. Am I misunderstanding what you mean by Software Shading?

When I first discovered this problem I was told to use Software Shading as well to fix it. It wasn't until I tweaked my Open GL setting was I able to return to Hardware Shading.

Yes, i'm sure. Maybe the problem techsupport answered on was caused by some Open GL issue. The problem i refered to only happens in software shading.

What spline problem is there in software shading? Is it posted as a known issue somewhere so I can read more about it?

thanks,
monsterfish

edit -
Can you tell us if the problem with double clicking on spline points with Open GL shading has been fixed? Maybe I should rephrase that as I am still able to use Open GL just not with the options that I was able to use in version 8. The problem occurs with having Active Object Plane and/or Active Highlite Plane enabled.

I think this came up some time ago, but i don't think there was an in depth discussion on it.

Triple plane (Highlite Plane) and Object Plane support have been introduced with R9, i doubt you were able to use them with R8 in any way.
Some drivers offer these options even though they don't correctly support them. If this is the case try other drivers or disable the option.

You're right, it was version 9. I still have it in my machine and it functions correctly with Triple plane (Highlite Plane) and Object Plane support turned on but causes C4D to crash in 9.5 and 9.6. I'm guessing that's what other people in this thread might be pointing to as well.
