i was just wondering abt how effective procedural textures actually are. that is, what is the percentage of procedural textures used in relation to bitmaps in a real production environment, say, the devlopemnt of a star-wars sci fi scene. secondly, what do people mean by high resolution images. i mean how large is a high resolution image. i know it depends on what you are texturing, but say i'm texturing a close up of a human face. what resolution should i unwrap that to?

Well, having worked extensively in a production environment, I can tell you that there is no particular preference - you use whatever gets the job done, whether it's procedurals, image maps, or a combination of both :)

I personally tend to use a combination of both, most of the time.

As for how large a hi-res image is - well, there is no particular standard, because it really depends on the model and the shot. But I would say, as a rule, that a good texture image for something that will be for a broadcast medium should NEVER be smaller than 1000x1000, and even that is just the bare minimum.

The bigger the better, because larger images have better clarity and hold up better in close up shots.

I personally don't tend to use anything less than 2000x2000 pixels, and would use even larger images, except I only have a P4 1.7Ghz with 1 gig RAM, which isn't powerful enough to have lots of 5000x5000 (or higher) images, so I just stick to 2000.
