View Full Version : Post Workflow : Dof and Mblur

Hi Folks

Just wondering if anyone here can shed any light on something for me. When we do 3D renders we usually want to apply Motion Blur and Depth of Field on the images. Currently we do this "in camera" in LightWave using the built-in motion blur and the X-Dof plug-in for DOF.

However, I'd quite like a workflow where can apply these processed in post (in Fusion, ideally) on "clean" renders without Mb and Dof.

Individually both of these effects are quite strightforward but does anyone have any experience doing BOTH on a render. Which order should they be applied? Should the depth buffer be mblurred? Should motion vectors be DoFed?

Thanks in advance for any help!

That's a tough issue. I usually do the 2d motion blur first, in render or using maya's blur2d utility. I also blur the z-pass the same way. Usually you will want to separate the render into layers and DOF them separately, so you don't get background artifacts around the edges of foreground objects.

In the past, I've always used clean renders, with no DOF or camera MB, and done both in the comp. I have more control that way. Unfortunately, I don't know the toolset of Fusion well enough to tell you which buttons to push.. I've done DOF before camera MB, and object MB before DOF. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your replies guys. It certainly makes the 3D rendering easier if you generate "clean" renders without these artifacts.

The weird thing is that this does sound like it's a bit complicated to get working and would have to be tweaked on a shot-by-shot basis. The great thing about the LW process I mentioned (LW 3d mblur and X-Dof) is that is *always* works and doesn't really require any setup or tweaking.
