I personally think that this sculpture was based on the study of male models. Perhaps women models were very scarce in those days.

anandpg,

Welcome. :) Nice to see your model here - I agree that Michelangelo was likely working based from a male model. Are you aiming to refine this piece, or to go for 10-15 torsos? Either is of course fine with me. :)

Looking forward to seeing more of your work. If you could tell us something about your art training / background, that would be helpful.

Cheers,

Hi Rebecca! and hi all!
I think I will try and complete as many as possible, hopefully 10-15 so that I get as much sculpting practice as I can get. Later on I plan to try and refine all of them one by one, and perhaps work on the whole body, limbs and all.
As for background info, I am a sculptor-turned-3d modeler. I did my BFA in sculpture at the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, Kerala. I work on Maya and Zbrush. Great work, every body.. Its just awesome to see so many good artists working together in such good spirit!
I think its a great idea to learn from the work of the amazing ancient masters.

Cheers to all!!

Hi Guys!
thanks for the encouragement. I was hoping to post atleast one a day, but I got so overloaded with work at the studio, I barely had time to cook my dinner. Hopefully, I will take off early today and sculpt something to post here. btw, great work, guys... its so inspiring just to look at your threads.

As to Siju's question, I usually make my basic cage in Maya, rig and pose it and then export to ZBrush for sculpting. anyway, here, as it was going to be a quickie, I made the mesh and posed it with ZSheres in ZBrush, using Maya just to correct the mesh-flow a little bit and went on from there. It took close to 1 and a half hours with 2 beers to keep up the flow.. hehe...:D

Cheers!!

Hi!
Man!..male torsos are hard!! I love Michelangelo, though.. his studies are so sincere and nobody ever carved marble with so much passion as him, excepting Bernini, perhaps. btw, could somebody tell me how to paste images directly on the message instead of displaying thumbnails?

I took some liberties with the pose.. hope its not too bad..

I think this sculpture was done rather late in Michelangelo's life.. Looking at it, I am persuaded that the great master was at the peak of his sculpting prowess and his knowledge of anatomy towards the end of his life.. maybe he just lacked the stamina to carve marble for 20hrs a day as he did in his younger days.. anyway, i think this piece shows much more insight and maturity than any of his earlier work, though it is incomplete.

I usually start off with maya... I am able to structure my mesh better in Maya. ZSpheres are better for quick jobs like this, but they dont always give a clean mesh. You will need to clean it up a bit in Maya.

Hi anand,

Allow me to convey my sincere wishes for all the work you had posted here yet. More over I should say "Some of them are still there who really flow, admire The master - Michelegelo. "I saw the angel in the marble and I carved until I set him free." Giving life to a stone or a mesh is not a simple thing.

Now its the time to start modelling again after a long long time... For atleast to post in this thread... So i am starting of with a WIP portait of a girl Drawn in Photoshop with mouse.

Eagerly awating to see more completed works from the master.

Hi....Anan..... :)

Can't get over how well you depict those figures in Z BRUSH...AMAZEING...GREAT preleminary drawing studies also....FANTASTIC job, I think ..on that Carvaggio...really has that youthful muscle tone and appearance about it....
Thanks for taking the time out to stop by my thread, and for the sound advice... about combining Z BRUSH with another 3d software package to get the maximum effect.:)
BABY STEPS for me at the moment:scream: .....barely able to comprehend Z BRUSH right now...another
software will shortcircuit my brain for sure I think...LOL...
Was wondering if you had any tips for doing the hands,...mostly the fingers, using those z sphere's...do you have to make a seperate little sphere and joint for each digit of the fingers..?
I had trouble in that area on the z sphere figure that I just did...couldn't figure out how to
isolate just the hand area and just sub devide that one area for refinement, without sub deviding the whole figure...
Anyway, mainly just wanted to thank you for the inspiraton....THANK YOU..

P.S.....Can't wat to see that libian sybil....one of my favorite figures of his..:)

Hi Glenn.. I will try to answer your query about the hand later today in your thread.

Thanks, razz... I dont think I am much good in 2D.. I just use drawing as an aid to understand the forms I want to sculpt. I read in Irving Stone's "The Agony and The Ecstacy" that Bertoldo, Michelangelo's teacher, once told him: "Drawing is the candle the sculptor can light up, so that he does not have to grope in darkness". I think that says all thats to be said about the importance of drawing!

I'm just getting into zbrush myself, so it's great to see the level of anatomy study that can be achieved. My favourite is the peice in post #22,
I've always loved that side view with the arm thrust forward to reveal the interplay of muscles coming from the scaplua and on the side of the torso. THe best exaple being Michelangelo's 'Victory' in my view.

With each new study you amaze me more, Anand! How do you make it so close to the original? What magic is this? :D You're insane, sir. In a very good way, of course.
The contour of your model looks very similar to the original drawing. Shows your great knowledge of anatomy. I really don't know what to say.

btw, I have taken a liking to Rubens... I had always thought of him just as a guy who painted fat ladies!!..
Now that I look closely, I go crazy just imaging the amount of study that must have gone into his paintings. So much anatomical detail lies woven into those delicate strokes, though almost eclipsed by the richness of light and color.

I think, to really appreciate the work of a master, you must sketch from his paintings/sculpture.

I couldn't agree more! The more I've looked and studied Rubens' and Michelangelo's drawings over the years, the more I appreciate their mastery - and how untouchable they are, in a sense. It really is a matter of seeing their work on increasingly deeper levels, and that only happens by really looking hard at their work and trying to copy it. Appreciate reading your thoughts here as well as seeing your inspiring work. :)

Amazing, Anandpg. A valuable weekend after drawing these. I couldn't say which ones I like the most, they're all looking so great :bounce: I like the amount of studies you do, because I only tend to do a few...Yes, I'm slow.
Very lovely linework, and shading is just right to give a sence of light hitting the head/figure/arm.
Would sure love to see you doing more of these, though I miss your sculpts already :)

Wow, great 2d and 3d stuff. The limbs on the Pieta could do with a little work but I can see that you've concentrated on Zbrushing torsos and they do look fantastic.

The sketches look very natural and the marks are very confident and easy to look at. I like your style.

Anandpg Your work is incredible and most inspiring. You show such sensitivity to form and carve out as you need to show understanding of form and yet can sculpt some subtle and elegant shapes such as the calves of the Libyan Sybil.
Your are indeed a ZBrush master. My hope is when I begin my study of ZB, I will be able to have the sensibilty you demonstrate in your beautiful handling of your figures.

Thanks for stopping by, Rebecca... you know what? You have opened my eyes to a lot of things through this forum... the importance of master studies being just one of them... It just started with the torso lesson... and I dont think I will ever quit. thank you... thanks a lot.

Thanks, Razz... I have just started using my weekends fruitfully. Dont worry... I will start sculpting again soon.... meanwhile, sketching is very important home-work!!:)

Thanks for dropping in , Tonik!! Yeah.... Ive gotta work on the limbs... I am still not so good at positioning arms and legs in relation to the torso... they tend go off proportion... its a hard job... Ive gotta work on it. thanks for the feedback, man!

Thanks for the kind words, Glenn... About ZBrush, I wouldnt miss any opportunity to be of service to you..!

Hi FateBringer! Thanks for dropping in!

Thank you so much for the kind words, Aztc... it means so much to me coming from somebody as talented and experienced as you... The quality of your work is overwhelming.. Please consider me at your service whenever you want to know anything about ZBrush.

Hi Devil-inside...! Thanks for stopping by.... Actually I picked up that line from Irving Stone's Book "The Agony and the Ecstacy", about Michelangelo. Bertoldo, Michelangelo's sculpting instructor, tells him "talent is cheap; dedication is expensive.. it may cost you your whole life.." The 15 year old Michelangelo, who had no ambition in life but to carve marble, replies with his characteristic innocence: "but Master, what else is life for?"

Thanks for stopping by, Jramauri!!

Great taste Anand!:thumbsup:!"The Agony an the Ecstacy" pretty much shaped my life , read it when I was 16! About 20 times!

Try to watch the Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison movie of the same name !
Heston has done a god job as Michelangelo and Harrison as the Pope Julius II!

Cheers and Happy sculpting!

The 3D torso modelling is great. Very good muscle attachments and flow of fat and muscle layers. We can feel the muscles slide under the fat and see the details, yet subtle, of the muscles and tendons.

The only thing I'd like to see is a greater emphasis on visual design of the musculature from your perspective, such as the volume grammar relationship between the upright thigh and calf and the torso. What do you see their volumetic, visual, relationship, as you can describe it by advancing your modeling of the 3D torso-figures.

These 3D models you have created are really great to study. They are approaching sublime.

Hi Siju.. Thanks for dropping in.. You are right about "The Agony and the Ecstacy"... In my opinion, every artist should read that book. It changed my life too... I read it at a time when I was full of doubts about the course of my life, my choice of career, etc.. and it told me straight to my face what I ought to live for.. what the life of an artist is all about.. I taught me among a lot other things, that art is not about a career.. its about life, its about passion, its about what you live for, its about what you see when you look back from your death bed...

I will die a happy man if I realise in my life even one thousandth of what that book told me!

Hey! Great sketches. I always found it harder to draw from photos than paintings. Don't know why really, some paintings are photorealistic. You're doing a great job drawing from those photos. Nice foreshortening in the sketches with the girls playing volleyball. Foreshortening is so freakin' hard :scream:
Continue with this nice connection of 2d and 3d pieces :bounce:
Maybe you'll even make some paintings? :)

AztcFireFlower
11-18-2006, 09:45 PM
Hi anandpg,

You have really good studies going. The foreshortening reads pretty well, I think. I would watch the proportions on the arms in a few of the figures, though. One way is to check the negative space from, say the head, and the length of the arm. If you were to run a straight imaginary line from top of head to end of fingers, for example, is the nagative shape formed by the arm and shoulder to head, long or short or boxy? This is one way to see if the placement is correct and also trains you to look back and forth to areas correctly placed to help adjust area or limbs not sure about yet. If this doesn't make sense, let me know, and I'll try and come up with a different explanation.

Also thank you for your offer of your expertese in 3D. Would you by any chance know about Maxons' Body Paint 3D for a Mac?

Hi Razz, Thanks mate!! paintings?... I dont know... never been much good with colors.

Hi Aztc... Thank you so much for the feedback... My proportions are always a bit off... hope practice helps.. I think I somewhat get what you are saying, but not sure I got it right... can you explain with a drawing?... paint over one of my sketches if you like.:)

anandpg
11-21-2006, 04:17 PM
And, Aztc.. I used Bodypaint once for my "Master and Servant" Challenge.. on a windows PC.. Its a pretty decent 3d paint tool.. planning to do any texturing?.. Try a couple of different packages before settling for one.. There used to be one called "DeepPaint3D" .. dont know if its still around.. that was a simple and straight-forward one.. But I would say, try texturing in ZBrush before you try anything else!

Hey Anand,

great model sofar
I would suggest making him lean a bit more on his stick. He's an old man and acc to the ref it looks like the weight of his torso should be moved more to his right side.
The negative space between his left arm and his torso needs some tweaking too.(see the shape of the black triangle torso, upperarm, lowerarm). Maybe his upperarm is a tad too long? Not sure though.

Can't say anything on muscles and their places as your knowledge on that topic exceeds mine by far :)

Really looking forward to see more of this project!

HEY...Anand... :)

FANTASTIC START...:applause:
Only thing I notice, and I am not sure about, is the size of the feet and hands, and the bulk of the calif muscles ...you might try making them bigger.
Not sure how far you are going for total accuracy of the painting, or total accuracy of the way the figure would appear in real life.
Rubens does a lot of exageration of curves and form, to get the flow, and strength in his figures, by adding bulk, mass, and size of muscles.
That old man, may be old, but by the looks of him, I wouldn't want to go up against him, if you know what I mean...:scream:
Just a little something to keep in mind as you are sculpting him....exagerate...:)
Hope I have helped a little..just thought those points worth mentioning, before you got too far along in detail...:)
Am really looking forward to seeing the progress on this...THANK YOU FOR SHAREING YOUR STEPS....VERY INSPIRING WORK....I am really learning a lot by being able to see your step by steps....THANKS..

Beautiful job so far..:applause:
Be sure to capture the curves, strenght, and power of that leg that is coming forward.
Bulging calif muscle, pressure on foot, ankle ect....alot of weight on that one foot..
That leg, is catching all the weight, and all the muscles are reacting to that action, creating
all those nice snake like curves,..which in turn, creat the forward ...MOTION..:)
Really like the way you beefed up the upper torso and hips...has the feel and SPIRIT of a Rubens now...to me anyway....AMAZEING WORK....Anand, and very inspirering for me. This kind of work with Z BRUSH, gives me something to aim for with my own works done in Z BRUSH.

This is turning out to be a wonderful project, the skecthwork is great (I just looked at Ben and Ron's threads). Your resemblance to the reference is becoming more and more accurate as well :), the only thing that kind of throws me (and it may be because there is no staff) is that his center of balance seems a bit wrong. It looks, right now, as if his center is in his chest rather than on the arm/pec with the staff.

HEY....Anand.... :bounce: :)

You are really getting the energy and spirit of that pose and figure....GREAT JOB...:applause:
The only two small areas that I can see room for ajustments are...maybe have the big toe of the foot coming toward the viewer....BIGGER...spread out,and flattened out on the bottom edge, with all that wieght and force of forward movement upon it...Seems like the arch of that foot might also be shortened and raised, as if he is putting all his wieght on the front ball and toes of that foot,...causing the big toe to have that same stepped shape as the other toes, which look great by the way...can really feel the wieght and action in those other toes..maybe have them flattened and spread out across thier bottom edge. Missing it in that big toe, which is the tip, and climax of the forward movement and gesture of the figure.
Also wouldn't mind seeing the curves exagerated on the shoulder and upper arm that is on the viewers right side..the arm that leads into his hip....missing that nice wavey / snakelike
motion and action, that those curves creat, and the strength that they suggest in that arm.
Only a couple of small suggestions from me at this point in your developement of this FANTASTIC FIGURE...REALLY GREAT WORK Anand..and a GREAT PLEASURE SEEING IT.

Still dragging my feet in 3D. Am sorta concentrating on concept design instead. But, if I were to go with modeling, you would be the example of excellence for me.
Amazing work, my friend. Amazing.

Your skull studies are vibrant. You do a fine job of maintaining your eye on proportion.
Don't stop doing what you're doing.

Just stopping by to say.....BEAUTIFUL WORK..:)
Really nice emotion captured in the face of that Rubens...comes through loud and clear, even without the eyes and teeth, which can only add to it that much more..:scream: Can't wait to see the end result of this sculpture...AMAZEING, to be able to take a painting such as that one, and
be able to bring it to life in 3d, and also be able to retain the spirit and emotion of the piece
at the same time...TRUE MAGIC..:bounce:

Also like those drawings alot...

I worked a little bit on the head today.. its been a long time since I modeled something from scratch, so I though I might as well take some screenshots and share it with you guys:

defining the basic outline:

hehe you just use your imagination and hope for the best + if you're matching the angle of the camera to that on the painting you may get pretty close... but otherwise it's just imagination and some reference material.

anand - how are you tackling the hair?! :) And btw - are you taking her to zbrush or just going a full on traditional model here? and another one - texturing?! *nudge, nudge*

anandpg
12-31-2006, 05:10 AM
Hi Glenn! HAHAHA!!... I agree with Magdalena.. its imagination + eyeballing + hope and prayer!! Here is what I try to do: I try to imagine the original 3d scene as it was painted from- the mutual positioning and size of objects, distance from the camera, etc.. Then I model the whole scene roughly and place a camera to see if the whole thing matches with the image.. Then I experiment with the focal length and stuff till i get a reasonable match, and then move the objects around to match the image more exactly. I have had to do this a lot while modeling sets because more often than not, the reference for a set does not contain a plan, elevation, etc. They just give you a "view" drawing of the set from some angle.. from which you have to build a whole 3D set!!

I do the same while modeling the head.. instead of trying to match the painting straight-away on a point-to point basis, I try to imagine the head in the round.. from all sides, then model the 3d head from that imagination.. Setting up the camera and matching the 2d image comes later.
Have a Great New Year, Glenn!! Greetings to Mrs SpiritDreamer!

Hi Magdalena! thanks!..
I think I will model the hair with NURBS surfaces and later use trasparency maps or something. Vikram told me you have an amazing method of combining NURBS surfaces with XSI hair!
I dont have much experience with maya hair, though.. I will just go with the surfaces.
I think I will finish up the head in maya and use ZBrush just for her dress and probably the hand. and aaaargh!! texturing!! I suck at texturing and shading... I will do my best, though.. or I will just give her a marble finish if it doesnt work out.;)

Hi Anand. Thanks for the encouragement. Your sketches are great and your models are amazing! I've never tried 3D, so I'm left speechless by your technique and accuracy. I can't wait to see how your OFDW progresses.

I see a fair bit of modelling using ZBrush around here. Is this like modelling with brushes? Or is it a paint texturing program that gives the illusion of depth on a pre-existing 3d model? I guess what I'm asking is, why would one want to use ZBrush instead of Maya or one of the big 3d apps for a given task?

Also, I'd love to see some of the work you do at your studio. Are you going to put up a portfolio anytime soon?

Hi Magdalena! thanks! I wish I worked half as much as you.. :(

Hi Johan! All the best to you for the new year!!

Hi Holden! thanks for dropping by!... The thing with ZBrush(and Mudbox) is that it supports an incredibly huge number of polygons, so you can subdivide your model to a level where you can manipulate it as a seamless surface(like clay or wax in the real world) instead of moving vertices and edges... and it provides you with tools/brushes which makes the modeling experience almost as tactile as sculpting with clay. As for stuff done at my studio, if i put any of that out, I am fired, HAHAHA!! I am hoping to put up a portfolio.. some day..!!

Hi Roja! thanks for dropping by!!

Well, I spent 5 hs reading all your thread. It's incredible. I won't write anything like "you are toptalented artist" and so on cause I think it's more than clear. I'm really -really- happy for you and your new wacom. I saved money for 3 years to buy it and a graphic machines so I can understand how much frustrating is. I'm sure that you'll manage it soon and you'll feel it so comfortable in modelling that you'll speed up and produce tons of pics. I just can't wait
I noticed that you like italian sculptors, especially Michelangelo. Well, the Pietà that you described, the Palestrina one (it's so called cause it has been exposed in a town named Palestrina) maybe it's not from Michelangelo cause there is no official documentation telling that he was working at it.The most accreditated theory is that it has been sculpted by a Michelangelo's student cause of the error in legs' proportions.
If you are interested and you want to see the last pietà of Michelangelo, have a search on google image with this key : "pietà rondanini". It is placed 20 km far from my home, in the castello sforzesco (Sforza's castle), Milan. I can't describe you the power of this piece. It's incredible to see it from live, maybe it's more interesting than the Rome's one.

See you soon,
Serena :)

Hi Serena! Thanks for dropping by, and for your precious time..... Permit me to envy you for having been born in a land of superhumanly great artists!! To visit your country has been one of my greatest dreams.. Thanks for the info on pietà rondanini. It is indeed a powerful piece.. a pity it had to be left the way it is.. (it is a wonder though, that the great master could so much as lift his mallet at 89!.. must have been the undying passion and the will, not just physical strength..) Thanks again for your time.. I went through your thread in the 2D WIP section... you have some awesome stuff going on there!!

Hey Micheal! thanks, man!

For hair, there is a great little tutorial by Don Seegmiller somewhere around here in this forum. I remember going through it awhile back, and thought it was pretty good. You might check it out if you have time and feel like it...might make your life a little easier, when it comes to doing hair..don't know...just thought that I would mention it, in case you were still looking for a tutorial on hair...:)

Hi anandpg, just dropping by to say thanks for the words in my sketchbook, much appreciated, and to have a peek at your own work! The 2d master copy is looking good, love the beard especially, the colours on it are very traditional oil-looking. And how's the 3d model coming on? I am in awe of your sculpting/modelling skills! the life and the detail you manage is truly amazing; your models literally jump off the screen!

Out of curiosity: have you ever sculpted in clay or other "hands-on" materials? and forgive me if you've already covered this in your thread (I've looked through most of your thread, but you know how some things can slip the eye... esp when there's a lot of lovely work to look at ;) )

Hi anand,

just admiring your wonderful work and must say that for me you are one of those 3D modellers who can really take their craftmanship to the level of classical understanding of figurative art.

There's quite a lot of impressive modelling to be found around here and other galleries/websites, but apart from the impressive realism that people achieve through good modelling, madly detailed textures and half a day of rendering the lighting (:D ) I must say that your untextured mastercopies are much more intruiging, for me at least. They don't put everything in my face (sometimes the near perfect realism of usual 3D work is just too much for me, you know? Hard to explain... ), but rather abstract from the object of study.

Pure and beautiful.

hehehe... I am really sorry for the kids.:D
I finished my first session yesterday and survived!:scream: I didnt have much of a demo to give, so I gave them some theory and some brotherly advice and then gave them the clay and the tools... asked them to have fun and get used to the medium.. I have lots of preparation to do for the coming sessions...

Hi Cyanid!! Thanks for dropping in!

Hi Mu! Thanks for the kind words.. You are right... the kind of photorealism that we see now is awesome, but sometimes a bit too much... the realism of the ancient masters had something more than realism to it... thats what I want to explore!

Hey Magdalena! hahaha!!... you are always welcome to come visiting! Dont hit me though!
... Actually I never did any serious anatomical study at college.. Every body was going "modern"... I tried to do "modern", but I guess I didnt have it in me.. and I was too young to know that it was more than 60% hog-wash!.. That lead to some kind of an identity crisis... I got a pass because I had good grades in life-study and stuff(I was good at "copying").. and not because anybody liked my work... never did much sculpture after that.. tried various things... like design, printing, music, etc.... untill my mother saved me from going to pieces by getting me interested in computers and funded me for a course in multimedia... Anyways... I am glad about whatever I am doing now... whether digital or "hands on".. Its a gradual revival of something inside me that has survived all the neglect and disuse.

Hey Gunilla! Thanks!

Hi Razz! thanks, mate... yes, I will be sculpting a quite a bit in preparation for my teaching sessions in the coming three months... and I will be doing demos in class.(poor kids!)
Frontpage?... haha... lets see... I dont have much hope.

Johan! thanks buddy... This forum is such a treasure-trove of "Wow"s I can just hope and aspire to be a minor "Wow"!

Hey Serena!! thanks a lot!

HEY...Anand....:bounce:

Really enjoying what you did with the beard...Has that current of air flowing through it now...BEAUTIFUL JOB...
The air/wind in that painting, is what makes it so dynamic...more so almost than the figures themselves...you can feel the wind echoed throughout the painting,..from the cloth, all the way down to the hair....it's what brings the painting to life, and instills it with all that energy....I think it is really fantastic that you are able to capture that same feeling in sculpture...WIND ENERGY..:bounce: :)

Seeing these step by steps are really a great thing for me...They are giving me a much greater understanding of Z BRUSH and 3D princaples and techniques...Really enjoying and learning from them.

I don't usually look at the 3D anatomy threads but this one just blew my mind : ) I even saved some of your michaelangelo studdies to my HD fro ref later on. I am a huge fan of his work no thanks to our darling Rebecca K. You have it nailed.

I have always heard that the best modellers are good 2D artists. Also, that physical sculpting is a really good basis for any 2D and 3D anatomy since it better helps you understand and in turn communicate the 3D forms. You seam to have all of these things working in you favor and it shows. Keep up the amazing work.

One suggestion on the Carvaggio head. Right now you have the pupils sculpted out in a concave fashion much like marble work. I would like to see what happens if they were convex like real eyes, with just slight indentations where the edges appear. It would make him look more real and less like stone. Just an idea, it is already great.

Hey Glenn! Thanks for your support as always! By telling me about the wind, you just brought an entire new meaning to what I should be aiming at with this piece... I will try my very best to do justice to it.:scream:

Hi Siju! I plan to treat this piece rather like a sculpture, and try to render it with some kind of a marble feel.(and thus escape texturing... hehe..!:D)... I dont know... eventually, when I finish this thing(someday).. I may go ahead and do a textured version if I have nothing better to do at the time... hehe!!

Hi Shay! thanks for dropping in and for the kind words... the concave iris method generally works better for sculpture(I am aiming at sculpture-like treatment for this piece), because it gives a feeling of depth... and reads better even from a distance.. (you meant the Rubens head, right?) I will also post a version with the method you mentioned in the final.. see which one you like better.

Hey, Johan! Thanks, mate!... Hmm.. ya.. I am a bit hasty at the blocking stage... and pay by having to come back to low poly and set things right after I have subdivided, like 7 times!.. thank god, this is not marble!!:scream:

Looks like your off to a great start with that child...nice proportions..
Maybe just a little extra exageration in the outter curves of the child to keep the rythum, and the MOVEMENT it creates alive and in unison with the larger figure,..to where they BOTH relate together through thier curves as ONE....just a thought that might be of help ...don't know...:)
Speaking of help..LOL...:scream: ...HELP..
I just started a Z BRUSH head,..posted on last page in my thread.
I want to use the SNAKE HOOK BRUSH, and the other brushes that are in that top row of tools, to creat horns for the head.
Every time I pick that brush, or any of them for that matter, it says current tool is in edit mode, would you like to switch tools..I say OK,then I lose the ability to spin the head around as i'm working on it.
I quess the question is,..how do I use those tools/brushes, and at the same time keep the head in the 3d mode where I am able to spin it around as I work on it with the tools/brushes that are in the three rows of the tool bars...The head is created using the simple sphere, and is saved as a tool in the ztl mode I think it's called...I have looked at that dvd I have on Z BRUSH, over and over, but can't seem to find where he says how to use the brushes in the tool section, and keep the thing I am working on in the 3d mode at the same time...REALLY BEGINNING TO GET FRUSTRATING......need some ..HELP :banghead: ...

Hey Mu... haha! I'll sure let you know!:D

Hi Michael! thanks for dropping in!

Hi Glenn! I will try out your suggestions once I get both the figures together.(Hope my long-suffering little notebook doesnt die on me!... poor thing has endured a lot already!!)

Hey Icey! thanks a lot, man!

Hi Corvax! no problem! thanks for dropping by!

Finally got to try out my new Conte Crayons!... Glenn was right.. they are not exactly shades of grey, though thats what the writing on the pack says... they are shades of very desaturated brown and bue! I love them, what ever shade! It's strange... i dont find it easy to draw with them... takes a lot of getting used too... but still I so love the feel of it, I might get addicted!

I tried a Burne Hogarth copy... its almost impossible to copy him due to the inherent dynamism of his drawings and the apparent speed and confidence with which he delivers his strokes.. Picked up his "dynamic figure drawing" and "dynamic anatomy" from the studio library.. I think they are essential reading for every artist.. the principles and methods he expounds in "dynamic figure drawing" are so priceless... and his method of teaching them is so straight forward and simple!

Well, it's just a warm grey if you ask me. Sorta like with markers, warm and cold greys, when cold is something like T (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/img/dev/screengrabs/mgo01/mgo01h.jpg)HI (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/img/dev/screengrabs/mgo01/mgo01h.jpg)S (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/img/dev/screengrabs/mgo01/mgo01h.jpg) and warm something like THIS (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/img/dev/screengrabs/sme02/sme02d.jpg). Or just a dull dull dull brown really :) It's just how you look at it.
Have I been gone for a long time or you've gotten so far with your drawing skills in such a little time? "Playing" with atmospheric perspective more would give an even better look.
Oh, and it's easy to get addicted to drawing/painting,yay :bounce:

Hey Razz! thanks for the links, buddy!... awesome stuff... makes me want to try marker!! ... will, one of these days.:scream: ... glad you think I have improved... been spending more time on sketching these days!

Hey Abyss! thanks a lot!

Didnt sculpt or paint a bit during the weekend.. except for the demo I gave my clay-modeling students.. Got inspired by Hogarth and tried "inventing" a few figures from imagination... A bit tricky... I spent more time erasing than drawing!!:D ..very enjoyable and rewarding, though!:)

wow very powerfull! great gestures. A bit overmusculated all, but I think thats what you were aiming for. I like the running one an the last one the most, you nailed the torso.

Keep it up, I like the 2D ones very much...somehow 3d doesnt say me anything, but thats personal and goes for all the 3d on this board (and out there).

HEY...Anand...:bounce: :applause:

Those conte crayon drawings/paintings..page #16 ......BEAUTIFUL..
I'm glad you said that about Burne Hogarth..When I had him as a teacher, it totally blew me away, and still does, when I think about the speed, energy, and accuracy of his strokes...He would only look at the model that was in the class for a couple of seconds,..then wip out this beautiful life sized conti crayon drawing/painting of the model in just a couple of minutes...like I said...blew me away..:scream:
All came from the knowlage that he mastered and demonstrates in those books of his, which he gained from studying Michelangleo's methods of creating the human figure extensively. Michelangleo learned it from the Roman scultures, which in turn learned it from the Greeks...That knowlage in those books of his goes back a long long ways..:) which is what I have been trying to tell all of the people in this forum for two years now...those books and the knowlage in them, priceless...tried, and proven..:)
WAY TO GO ...Anand...:applause:
KEEP INSPIRED,...AND INSPIRING...
TAKE CARE

Love the flow and movement in that last drawing. Hope to see more of these, you're really getting some nice expression in the figures. That's the thing I like about your 3D work as well, it's expressive as well as technically proficient - which is really rare now that I think about it with 3D, most of which I am wowed by technically, but not wowed by emotionally - very unique, something I think artists should strive for. :)

Love your conte stuff, nice rendering and a great treatment of the subject.

The stuff from imagination is very solid. I've been trying to do some of that lately and appreciate all the more how hard it is, especially when you're applying anatomy -- almost feels like juggling :).

Man you manage human bodies in an incredible way. SO fluid but also SO right so...realistic in few lines. Visiting your 3D it's always a pleasure.

Bravissimo.
