well... I tricked myself into signing up for steam punk (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/steampunk/) cgchallenge while my good sense was looking the other way! :scream:.. and this is my very, very rough concept.
I know it looks very cliche right now, but I will be doing this in 3d and will hopefully make a lot of changes as I go (that is, if I really end up doing it! http://www.anandpgindia.com/images/emoticons/17.gif) I really don't have a story for it right now(may be an Indian Mythological Steam Punk take on King Kong! :D ) ...but I hope to eventually make up a story for this!
http://www.anandpgindia.com/images/steamPunk/concept001.jpg
Woops still have to take the time to read all about the steampunk challenge.
Have fun with your project Anand!

Hi Anand, great start on the steampunk competition. I saw a similar competition here:

That competition is already over but you might find some inspiration and some interesting links there! Have fun!

hey Anand - wow - you have joined the steampunk challenge!
eager to see you working on that project!
enjoying your very first concept-post already :) )

btw - did the retardant medium help you painting acrylics - or did you just have to paint quicker in the end, lol ??? (so quick, those acrylics, aren´t they);
and - also wanted to tell you - it is still over my mind how you can achieve such beeeeaaaautifull detailing on your sculptings :)

So excellent to pop in here and see your latest work -- the hand on the old man is just brilliant!!! Especially the top of his hand, the way you've worked the tendons and the skin is simply wonderful
Nice view-shot of your outdoor painting too - looks like you were withing 'hollering' distance and able to carry on a conversation (perhaps a loudish one...) with your model friend.

Hey people! thanks for the support!
Sorry for the long absence! Been busy with a few things. I am in Los Angeles now for a 3-month training program at Dreamworks's studio here at Glendale. Among other good things in LA, I had the privilege and honor to meet Rebeccak..! :scream:..I never knew somebody could be one of the most brilliant among artists and at the same time be the nicest person! ..it's just not fair!:D
Well, I had enough of being lazy, whatever the excuses... started sculpting last night.. I know I have lots of unfinished stuff, but I am too rusted right now to do anything complicated, so started on a portrait of Chet Baker (http://www.chetbakerjazz.com/), one of my favorite jazz musicians. I want to do a few versions of him.. I am totally obsessed with his music! (I have to model a trumpet for him, now! :banghead: )

A little progress on Chet Baker... He is balancing his trumpet on his lap with his right hand (I still haven't modeled the trumpet  ) Borrowed the arms from my "Pensioner" :p
Work is kind of slow on this, because I am working on my old laptop, and its 1GB RAM definitely feels a bit uncomfortable after the 6GB at home! :hmm:

looking great Anand! Trumpets are difficult to model and you're on track to make a nice one. :) I used to play trumpet all through my middle and high school years so I saw a couple minor things that could use some tweaking.
1. The slope from that last pipe that connects to the bell should have a deeper falloff. It should flareout at the last few inches.
2. Check on the diameter of the second valve pipe. It should match those of the first and third valves.
3. Check the turns in the pipes nearest the mouthpiece in your images. The big one that turns into the pipe leading to the bell and the first valve pipe. I think the turn should be more symmetrical.
Of course, you may be using different reference for dimension and design but I found this link of a Bach Stradivarius trumpet (http://www.hollisgermannmusic.com/largepics/IMG_3029.JPG) that's the industry standard for awesome trumpetness.
Hope that helps. Just trying to be constructive. I really enjoy where you are going with this project!! :)

WOW!, I really loved your models, I wish I could model like you. You are very skilled. Your work of Michelangelo's sculptures is awesome! I love all those tiny details.
I would like to ask you if Zbrush demands you to have a really good anatomy knowlegde to be able to model like that. I would like to master Zbrush someday, I want to ask: Is it difficult to use?
I congratulate you!
best regards,
Matias

02-02-2010, 03:31 PM
Hey Matias,
Thanks a lot for the kind words!
Zbrush is very intuitive and easy to use. Once you get past the base-mesh, it is almost the same as working in clay, in my opinion.. maybe a little easier. :) Yes, a certain amount of anatomy knowledge is helpful, supported by a fair amount of life-study. Regular figure-sketching will go a long way in helping you sculpt comfortably using Zbrush, IMO. :)

I would like to make a question about Zbrush since there is no doubt that you master it.
In your experience, do you think the graphic geometric tools of Zbrush can help me to better understand human figure volume and planes? In other words, is Zbrush helpful to understand how to draw the figure from any angle? Is it also helpful to understand lighting and cast shadows?
Thanks in advance,
Matias
