It am not sure if this is the best Idea ever, or this will be the worst disaster since
Mariah Carey in the movie "Glitter".

can I guess what it is? is that allowed?

i'm betting the challenge is to take a visual effects shot from the "motion control" era (star wars, 2001, ET,etc...) and recreate it entirely digitally.

yes?

Taking art that was incredibly hard to pull of an recreating it in half the time and having it look half as convincing?I hope this is only the challenge for this part of the forums as not THE challenge.

Ready to tell us the theme of THE challenge Robert? THE?

Yeah you got it.
But the shots would be picked from a list.
Here in FX Wars we have shied away from challenges.

The idea of the Motion Control challenge is to learn and pay tribute to the visual effects of the motion control era.
The idea is to take a page from the art world, where master copes are used as a teaching tool. In this case the idea is to replicate classic VFX shots from the motion control era to learn core principles (like lighting, staging, weight, auxiliary effects.)

The movies in my list fo far are:

Aliens (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/)
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084726/)
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088170/)
Stargate (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111282/)
Independence Day (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116629/)
Star Wars (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080684/)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086190/)
The Terminator (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301928/)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075860/)
The Abyss (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096754/)
2010 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086837/)
Blade Runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/)
The Hunt for Red October
Fith Element

I still am coming up with the specific shot lists.

keep in mind, these mini challenges will be VERY short. Most of the models are available,
or better yet, we might do them with the hardcore modelling people.

And if this works, we might do other tributes.. like
FXWARS- VFX Tribute (Phil Tippett (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0864138/))

or
FXWARS- VFX Tribute (Ray Harryhausen (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0366063/))

Roberto,

what about Haryhausen shots and effects. Redoing a classic harryhausen scene, like the skeleton fight, or the battle with Kali, or a new kraken shot.

Harryhausen gave us all a lot of really cool imagery to draw from, and maybe even inspired a few of us.

That is the plan, but the reason I want to do a Motion control age mini challenge is that I wan to push more working on composite images.

This will be a very cool challenge. I guess it will require quite a long deadline to finish it. Btw, Roberto, will the list of films include those of much more recent years, from 2000 up till now (2005)?

Thanks,
