View Full Version : Accurate light diffusion through frosted glass

Does anone know if this is possible:

I am using Autodesk VIZ 4 radiosity (basically the same as MAX 5 radiosity) to create an interior view, which is illuminated by sunlight.

I want to accurately show the effect of the raytraced sunlight become diffused into soft shadows as it passes through the frosted exterior glazing.

Is it possible to modify the glass material in some way to achieve this? (Don't want to resort to shadow mapped lighting). I've tried adding 'noise' the bump channel, fog density to the ray trace material, and upping the translucency, but it doesn't seem to work.

My company has also just purchased a copy of Brazil - is there some way of mixing and matching the Brazil glass and VIZ sun system to get the result I want?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Heya,

If you're using Brazil r/s - then you can always try Caustic Photons, and a true glossy glass.
The glossy glass will scatter the photons about, and essentially create this effect.

Be prepared for some heavy amounts of photons, though - it's not really what they're meant for.

I'd suggest using two lights.

One light that provides (semi-)sharp shadows in the area before the frosted glass.

An then another (arealight) to provide blurry shadows in the spread that you want (more frosted glass = more spread) -behind- the frosted glass.

That'd be the easiest route, imho.
