I've done several searches for rigging animals and/or quadrupeds, and come up with next to nill. The closest I got was finding "The Rigging Machine 2" thread, which kinda sucked for quadrupeds(at least on the wolf sample they had on their website). It seems like most of the rigging topics discussed focus mainly on bipedal humanoids.
I need to rig a wolf, and an elk, so I'm looking for solutions on rigging and animating animals. And since animals basically walk on the balls or toes of their feet instead of heels, they need different IK solutions don't they?
I've rigged a bipedal character with an inverse foot before (using Learning Maya 5 | Character Rigging and Animation), but I'm stumped trying to figure out how to translate this to animals...
If anyone knows of any books or tutorials that describe the rigging process for quadrupeds or animals, could you please share?
I've looked on amazon.com and found a couple titles which sounded kinda promising, but I think they focus on bipedal characters. They were "The Game Animator's Guide to Maya", "The Game Artist's Guide to Maya", and "Game Character Development with Maya". Has anyone read any of these, and know if they have any helpful tutorials concerning quadrupeds???
I was also looking at CG Toolkit's "The Art of Rigging", but it looks like it's mainly focused on mechanical design applications, and may not translate to organic quadrupeds. Does anyone have this CG toolkit, and can speak of it's translation into animal rigging?
I wish Radiant Square would just make a "Final Rig" for quadrupeds already...
Thanks,
Joe
