View Full Version : Reflect of environnement on a glass (Light car)
St-Craft 09-23-2006, 08:36 AM Hi im actualy doing a Murciélago car, and i got a problem with the top of the front light. I have a Glass shader and im using vray 1.5.
I got 2 problem :
1) First of all, i got absolutly no reflect on the glass of the environnement, im using a hdri and 1 light. (Hdri on skylight reflect/refract)

2) If i put down my camera the glass do something wierd with the light inside, i guess it's because of the IOR but how to correct that ( 1.0 Ior ? don't work)

With those problem, it seem like i don't have any top glass light...
Im sure it's a stupid problem, but its a problem...

First, about the IOR issue. I'll assume it's a single sided object, as such one way to solve that is to give the headlight cover some thickness. The shell modifier works great for this. Then you can set your IOR back to 1.5
If you can't add thickness to the cover, then try disabling the double-sided option in the options rollout of the material settings.
Now about the reflections, just double check that you've enabled reflections on the material. Also with your particular glass object, I think it would be a good idea to enable the fresnel reflections option.

Fresnel looks good on everything.
Just remember that the s is silent! :)

Wow Jeff Himself answer me ! Woohoo :D
Ok the reflect work, but the Refract? or Ior, well i don't know, is rapping my glass :

The Double side seem to do nothing =/.

So there's no difference in the look when you disable double-sided or when it's enabled? Hmmm, what about adding the shell modifier to give thickness. Is that not an option due to the mesh design? It doesn't need to be much, just a touch of thickness.
Also, I don't know what will happen when you use both a falloff map and the built in fresnel falloff effects.
How about just start with a new blank vray material. Turn the reflection & refract colors to white as you have set in this existing material. Then enable the fresnel reflections option. And leave the refraction IOR at 1.5. Leave the fog off until you have the glass working as you'd like, then tweak the colors/fog, etc.
Then if you can't add the shell modifier, render it with and without the double-sided option enabled. If you can add the shell modifier you can leave the double-sided option at it's default (on) state.
I'm really just throwing ideas out, but you might also want to try turning off "reflect on back side" if it's a single sided plane object. If these don't work, then I'm not sure what's going on...but I'm sure some of the Vray experts around here will come by and offer the solution.

Ok here some other render :

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7285/wierd4vt3.jpg
I did that before i see ur message...
For the falloff, i put a falloff in many slot and i inverse black/white, fresnel-perpendicular(?), change the valur of the white or black... What can i say is, i can easily loose my reflect, and it deform a lot the thing behind. Or i Too much reflect etc.. etc...
The problem seem to be the refraction, but i need to put it white if i want the shader transparent !
Here a render with a shell :

The reflect back side do a better render, more clean, black are more black and white are more white... Like the double sided, don't work but its seem to be better.
Here with the "default" shader :

Take a look at the attached file and see if it helps any. The file is a .rar file, not a .zip file. I'm not able to attach a .rar file here and .zip didn't compress it enough to attach...so that's why I did that.

Hmm i never expected this way, actualy i was trying to put a vray mtl on every shader of my car, to be sure its optimize.
But, a standart mtl with a vray reflec... i guess its optimize.
To be honest i didn't know about the vrya map !
Thx a lot for this small tutorial, i hope its gonne help some people in future !
Here my result, i decide to put the black to a grey color on the black, because the reflect was a bit too low.

Thank you so much Jeff !
