Does anybody know of any tutorials or any knowledge on this subject? I know alot of people would say just map a sphere in any 3D program, but are there any good painting tips for the texture map? Thanks

hi Quantium,
personnaly i used textures like we used in 3d. In photoshop, on a large canevas i blend a lot of them. Everything could be used, for exemple, wood textures are nice to made some mountains .... when i'm satisfy i used the filter " spherize " and i start colorize it.
if you wanna see my result

I like creating mountain effects with the cloud filter, then alpha channel, then lighting effects. Let me know if you want me to expand on this. You can also play with the emboss filter. To be honest i'd just get a few high res planet shots and play around with them.

There's a famous web guy who creates really cool photoshop planets, forgot his site, anyone know who i mean?

In general, there are a lot of royality free photos out there of real planets, I'd take a few, mix em together using various photoshop blend modes, paint ontop of the result, you'll get some real looking results pretty quickly, at least for mid level / background planets. For super close planets, I may recommend the 3d route that you mentionned.

Hi, my first post on these forums, I've been reading them for a few weeks now!

Anyway, the guy you may be referring to is Greg Martin? http://www.artofgregmartin.com
