View Full Version : Rgb To Cmyk Conversion... Help!
jackie66 09-23-2006, 03:05 AM I am having huge difficulties finding a way to properly convert rgb to cmyk. Not by going mode: cmyk btw... that just makes a sort of mask over top.
Can anyone help me? I really need it! Even point me to a step by step tutorial would be great. If I can't figure this out, then I have to go back and redo the drawing in cmyk to start with... not fun. There is my sob story...
Thank-you so much if you can help me!
Jackie.

can you be more specific as to what your problem is?
RGB is not CMYK as you know,, but the mode conversion converts the color model from one to the other as expected.
if you are working in RGB, when you select an RGB value the CMYK equivelant is visable in the dialog box so you always have a visual on what to expect as you work in RGB... it also will tell you when you are out of CMYK value range as you pick colors.
I hope this helps
Best way to work if your final is destined for for print is to start of in CMYK color mode, when converting rgb to cmyk you always will have some color clipping, look at the result and adjust you colors manually.

Image->Mode->Convert to Profile
choose custom CMYK from the Destination Space drop down. It will give you some options for fine tuning the mode conversion.

Thanks for the comments. I did end up repainting the image, out of frustration. Whenever I sent it away as a rgb converted to cmyk, it was still 'truly' an rgb. It would still be wonderful to know how to do it, for later use.
For the "convert to profile' thing, Thats not an option in image-mode. I have CS2. Hmmm. Am I missing something? http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/jackie6651/question.jpg
Thanks for taking the time!

Convert to profile is under the edit menu.
What conversion method works for one image may not work for the next so post your before and after images and we will attempt to help with a conversion technique.
As -NG- says, its safer working in cmyk if you will be printing in cmyk.

The mask you are talking about maybe caused by RGB colors that don't convert to the CMYK color space well, that's also known as out-of-gamut colors. Deep blues and some very saturated colors will turn grayer when converted. Some layer blend modes work better in RGB than CMYK and some filters are RGB only. If you need to work that way (in RGB) but you are going to print it later, I would suggest turning on View/Proof Colors, that way while you are still working in RGB you will see what the CMYK will look like. Otherwise start your project in CMYK like others said.

Thanks for all of the information. I think that I learned my lesson. From now on I will start in cmyk if I need that outcome. Seeing as I already repainted it as cmyk, I don't need to convert it anymore, but If I ever need any help, I know where to come!

just work in RGB but with CMYK preview on...then you can use all the filters that dont work in CMYK + your files are smaller and you can still see what it looks like.
You can then convert to cmyk at the end after flattening (critical).
if you used mode>cmyk then it will be 4 colour.
