Eurayo,
Welcome! :) You have some lovely work here, and a nice piece from the 50 Portraits Thread I see. Great to see your work - it would be great if you could introduce yourself to the community by telling us a bit about your art training and background.
I also hope you'll participate in the ongoing Workshop:
Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198&page=1&pp=15)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198&page=1&pp=15
Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
Cheers,

Oooooo, Eugene...I love the texturing of the papers...on top of the drawings being so nice.
Welcome aboard.

Thank you for the welcome, Chris and Rebecca.
I'll consider participating in the torso series. Do you think in the future they'll consider including art and artists or even figures from outside of Europe? We're missing out on some beautiful work.
Here's a new one:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g59/Eurayo/09230601.jpg
I have a BFA in Graphic Design and currently dabble in sci-fi and fantasy art as a hobby. Most of my formal drawing training came as part of an AA degree program. After getting my BFA I was introduced to Elfwood by my friend Perry, and rediscoverd how much I still loved the genres. Soon thereafter, I started drawing and painting again and posting work online, but with a new perspective. I realized that I'd lost interest in emulating my favorites (like Vallejo, Burns, Foss, etc.) and wanted to challenge myself (and my audience) through my choice of subject matter and human anatomy.
In 2003 I was approached by Fleer International and asked to illustrate a series of 32 cards for a new game (Ophidian 2350). I loved that project! They really let me cut loose and have fun. I even had one of my illustrations featured in Scrye. But the fans were so disgusted with my work that I wasn't invited back to work on the second set. A gamer in a forum described one of my cards as "the worst card art in the history of gaming." I've been in hiding ever since. I might even have to change my name if I ever hope to get ccg work again.
The good news is that my work has gotten a lot better since then.
So now, for me it's all about anatomy. I am particularly interested in being able to construct from memory the broadest possible range of body types in addition to mastering formulas and idealized forms. I attend a figure drawing session every week and sketch in public as much as possible, but I feel I still have a long way to go before I feel I can have the confidence to start approaching companies as illustrator.
This year I finally invested in a tablet and started working digitally and even have a renewed interest in superhero comic book illustration after spending time in the HeroTalk forums.
more to come...

So glad to see you here! The studies are great. It's so cool to see this kind of art from you as well. I'm really looking forward to more. And please, oh please, some creatures too. You're so amazing with them, I really miss those!

Eurayo,
Some really solid work here! Really love the variety and experimentation, not to mention the strong sense of expression in your drawings. One minor thing is that the female back/torso drawing from life drawing has a waist which is rather pinched, but it has a great quality to it in terms of the expressiveness of the line. Glad to see more of your work. :)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I decided to explore ballpoint pen and crosshatching at this morning's drawing session. My current focus is developing more confidence with my line work in order to improve my character design.
Ricardo is an especially lean model who posed for our ecorche class last year. The lighting was flat, and I tend to get lost drawing broad areas with little detail, but these came out okay. I enjoy important surface details become visible, allowing me to revist them and cross-reference the forms with the ones I've memorized. Life drawing for me is like being dropped into a familiar patch of woods and finding my way back out again.

Hey Eurayo, outstanding work here.
One thing to watch are your features, I feel they are getting a little exaggerated. Mostly in size, but also you are going a little outliney. The combination of these things in excess tends to give paintings a slightly cartoony effect. If this is a stylistic choice ignore me crits and just read the first line because I do like your work
Eurayo

I appreciate the feedback. I've been a fan of your work for quite some time.
After thinking about it a bit I realized that my life drawing studies I'm practicing both line and modelling form on the same pieces. My instructors got me hooked on a loose, gestural and painterly approach years ago and now it just feels sloppy to me. I've been trying to slow down and use a more controlled and "academic" approach with line and cross hatching but the loose stuff keeps creeping back in. This year has been all about discovery and practice for me. Expression is another thing I'll be working on in the near future...

I wouldn't worry about it too much...
for others (like me) it's an almost utopian goal to get that same looseness you are talking about in their work. I think this is something that is more visible in our minds than on the drawings themselves.
While you see "sloppyness", I see "schwung" and "life" in your work.

Hi...Eugene ..:)
Some really beautiful works in your thread so far..lots of variety ..
GREAT job on that last selfportrait..
Those reddish brown conti drawings catch my eye...wouldn't mind seeing more of those...You might check out the technique of using conti crayons by Burne Hogarth..he was a true master in their use..He could get volume and line in one stroke with those crayons,..which really make the figures pop out at you, and gives them that oneness/cohesiveness of form and line...You just use the whole side of the crayon to crete volume and edge within the form, and press down at the tip of the crayon to get your fine line used for accent here and there to strengthen and define certain areas that may need it..all in one stroke.
ANYWAY,...GRAET PLEASURE GOING THRU YOUR THREAD..KEEP POSTING.. :)
