Entrant Comments: Hello, my mindset going into the contest was to have some fun and see if I could finish. The models aren't as clean as I would have liked them, but I had a good time making them. I definetly need more work on the organic models though.

I like to give a big thanks to everyone who gave me pointers & support in the WIP thread and all my fellow contestants. I learned alot from reading your threads and look forward to the next challenge.

Entrant Comments:
I started off hoping to do the platinum with 30 models. But a festival break to my native and other work schedules kept me away from challenge quite often and I lagged back. Anyways happy I could do 20 to be in for the GOLD. I wanted to try attempting atleast a model from every genre (organic, mecha, inorganic..etc).
Though a modeling challenge, I got obsessed with spending more time (sometimes more than modeling) on rendering for presentation. I'm quite happy with the results as for a speed challenge and I hope you like them too. Thanks for the challenge!

Entrant Comments: I'm quite happy with how this all turned out, I think my skills moved along considerably as the challenge itself did. After an initial charge through the first 20 or so models things began to slow down as I got a bit worn out from all the late nights modeling away...lol...it just goes to show how hard a deadline like this can be to an artist (which I think was one of the intentions of the challenge). While there were a couple of models I wasn't to proud of in this collection I am totally staisfied with my efforts as a whole and would probably do it all over again...lol...maybe...

lol...now i'm glad i started doing that collage

also as for the voting, these awards are stated in the original thread

The best model will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Most Accurate Model (Collection)
Best Detailed Model (Collection)
Best Render (Collection)
Best Overall Collection
Most Accurate Model (Individual)
Best Detailed Model (Individual)
Best Render (Individual)
Highest Number of FINISHED models
For the first three collection awards, will they be given out for each challenge level? So that people who completed SILVER are competing with other SILVER entries and so on? Does that make sense?

Entrant Comments: Hello, my mindset going into the contest was to have some fun and see if I could finish. The models aren't as clean as I would have liked them, but I had a good time making them. I definetly need more work on the organic models though.

I like to give a big thanks to everyone who gave me pointers & support in the WIP thread and all my fellow contestants. I learned alot from reading your threads and look forward to the next challenge.

COMMENTS ON CHALLENGE:

I loved this challenge. This was a great way to see where my skills were, and a great reason to make some models besides just for the fun of it. In the beginning of this challenge I thought I knew how I was going to do this and that I was going to be able to maybe go for platinum, but unfortunatly my laziness kicked in (that and tiredness from work) and I didn't even finish the gold... though I do have enough for the silver... I hope that CG talk does something like this again... This challenge made me think on my toes and hopefully I can keep up the pace in my regular models so that I can have a decent portfolio to get a job in the CG field (retail is definitly wearing thin... lol).

------------------------------------------
MODEL LIST

1 - GLADIUS
2 - LOBSTER
3 - HAMMERHEAD
4 - HORSE
5 - AXE

10 - SCREWDRIVER (of course what else would come after the screw... lol)
11 - GAME BOY MICRO
12 - SPEAKERS
13 - CALLIGRAPHY INK
14 - CALLIGRAPHY PEN (what else would go with the ink)
15 - DESK (intended but couldn't render)
16 - MODEL T (intended but not finished)
17 - 20: use your imagination I didn't do them :-P

TOP (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/03_hammerhead_top.jpg)

COMMENTS:
With this model I would have taken a shorter time normally but I tried a new workflow that worked out rather well and made this hammer head look so real I was impressed, and apparently so were a couple of other people. This was the second model that I made that I made in Sub - Ds and I haven't completely learned it all yet, but I'm getting there.

MODEL #2 - LOBSTER

TOTAL TIME: ABOUT 12 HOURS (REMAKING IT TWICE)
PROGRAM USED: MAYA 7.0

COMMENTS: This guy was made out of fun, because I got this little guy from the Siggraph Conference. I think he looks like it though it isn't textured... I had fun with this guy and this was the first model I tried with SubD's. I learned alot while creating him.
-----------
MODEL #3 - GAMEBOY MICRO

TOTAL TIME:ABOUT 4-6 HOURS (I LOSE TRACK OF TIME WHILE MODELING... oops caps lock was on... lol)
PROGRAM USED: MAYA 7.0

TOP (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/11_gameboymicro_top.jpg)

COMMENTS:

With this model since I didn't have a game boy with me... I couldn't measure it... and I couldn't really find good pictures of the original gameboy... this one was my next choice because of all the readily available photos... I learned alot while making this one... and I was hoping it would have been a little fewer in poly count but everything everywhere was placed so that the poly count had to be high... I hope you like it... (ps I know the screw on the side is too low poly I already had a high enough poly count by that point).
-----------
MODEL #4 - PENCIL

TOTAL TIME: 4-5 HOURS
PROGRAM USED: MAYA 7.0

BEAUTY/PERSPECTIVE:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/06_pencil_small.jpg

LARGE - http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/06_pencil_large.jpg

BACK (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/06_pencil_back.jpg)

COMMENTS: This model was an interesting model... I tried to stay as true to the original pencil as I could... I think I did it... but then again there are a few things that may have slipped by... what made this model somewhat so easy was the fact that most of it's edges were straight... therefore making this a rather simple, yet complex model... because the few that aren't go all the way around the model... therefore keeping the poly count a little high... but I think that atleast the model looks good lol...
-----------
MODEL #5 - GLADIUS

TOTAL TIME: 3-4 HOURS
PROGRAM USED: MAYA 7.0

BEAUTY/PERSPECTIVE:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/gladius_small.jpg

LARGE - http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/gladius_large.jpg

ORTHO LINKS:

FRONT (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/gladius_front.jpg)
SIDE (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/gladius_side.jpg)
BACK (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/gladius_back.jpg)

COMMENTS: This was the first model that I did for this challenge. I was hoping it was going to get some praise but the only comments I had about it was about the handle being faceted and the wood grain swirling... But I have a solution as to why the woodgrain is swirling... That is because it was made from the center of the branch therefore making it a rather strong sword and making the grain/agerings swirl... That and this challenge is about modeling not texturing (though technically to make a convincing model you must have a convincing texture... I still think it is one of my better models (though more simplistic) in this challenge.
-----------
MODEL #6 - CELLPHONE

TOTAL TIME: 15-20 HOURS (OVER TWO-THREE DAYS)
PROGRAM USED: MAYA 7.0

BEAUTY/PERSPECTIVE:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_small.jpg

LARGE - http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_large.jpg

ORTHO LINKS:

FRONT (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_front.jpg)
SIDE (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_side.jpg)
BACK (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_back.jpg)
TOP (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m28/morphius_ms/30_models_30_days/07_cell_phone_top.jpg)

COMMENTS:This is a model of the cellphone that I currently have... this was a bitch to make and it still has a couple minor issues with it... the only difference that this model has to my cellphone is the fact that my cellphone has a camera and this model does not... that was because I didn't want to make another circle from a flat geometry... it got kinda annoying since I had somany of them. I hope you like it...

--------------------------------------------------------
MATTHEW'S(AKA MORPHIUS_MS') FINAL COMMENTS/THANKS:

I would like to take this time to thank RobertoOrtiz for doing this challenge though I didn't finish it, this was one hell of a learning experience. I also want to thank the person who suggested this challenge... I would have never had the drive to create this many models in this short of period... I would also like to thank all those who helped create the list... Though Roberto had the final sayso this list couldn't have been made up without you...

I hope to see another challenge like this one up soon, that time I will try not to let my laziness get in my way.

PS... I am hoping to get some comments and critiques on my models from fellow CGtalker's don't forget to visit my thread (link is in my signature)... thanks again.

HAVE FUN AT WHAT EVER YOUR DOING!!!

Entrant Comments: This was a challenge sometimes and somtimes not for me. I certainly found some weak points i have in modeling and was amazed how much i had learnt threw this challenge! I'm happy with the majority of the models that came out. I didn't want to apply any shaders or textures when i first started because shaders and textures hide detail. I wanted people to just look at the models and not at the renders that everyone seems to only look at. But i do now wish i had done something with the texturing and shading. But either way hope you enjoy the models and if you have any tips that might help me i'm open ears! Thanks for looking!

Entrant's Comments:
This was an enjoyable and rewarding experience, especially when I look back on the diversity of topics we had a chance to explore both in the organic and technical areas. While the timing of this challenge occurred while I was very busy with other 3D/2D projects and other things, I was determined to see it all through to the end and use the limited time I had (often borrowed against what should have been a good night's sleep!) to create what I felt could be interesting models, and even some scenes where I had a chance to push further. Working within the time constraints were a mixed blessing, and I used that to develop my speed modeling skills and push myself further in terms of productivity, eveat at times thinking in new ways about geometry/topology and in certain areas optimizing my workflow.

I plan to revisit some of these models in the future and develop them further. For me, one of the neatest things to come from this endeavor was the wooden puppet figure, which I am now using as the main character for an animation competition elsewhere. I have several animations in mind, so that should be fun!

In closing, I want to thank Roberto Ortiz and CGTalk for hosting this challenge. I think, as exhaustive as it is for all parties, it's an important, dynamic, and positive event for the 3D community and something that can help aspiring 3D artists interested in advancing their skills. I'd also like to thank all those (here and elsewhere) who commented on my work and encouraged me onward.

Best of luck to all the other participants and congratulations to all of you for a job well done :)

RobertT

Models Completed: 10
Entrant Comments: Initially, though I was interested in the challenge, I wasn't going to enter, as I was fairly certain that I wouldn't be able to complete 30 models in 30 days. Once I found out about the Silver level, I decided to give it a shot, since I would only have to complete 10 models in 30 (actually 35) days which, in the end, I was able to do.

For me, the challenge served several important purposes. First, it forced me to complete models, rather than starting them, putting them aside, and never getting back to them. Second, it forced me to focus on subjects I might otherwise ignore. And third, it gave me the chance to evaluate my own abilities.

Some models came out better than others, but in the end, I gained something from each one, and gained a bit more confidence in my own abilities. By the end of the challenge, my thought processes and modeling practices were definitely improved. There are a few models that I may re-visit, and, as I'd hoped, many of the tricks and techniques I picked up along the way will help out in future projects.

Thanks to Roberto and CGTalk for coordinating this challenge, and to everyone who helped out with comments/critiques along the way. It was definitely a challenge worth taking.

Possibly too late, but I cant tell the time zone things, if so I apologise in advance.

Didnt get all the models finished due to some outside issues but will submit my screws for individual category. I didnt get my horse finished and although I am pleased with it so far it is not finidshed so I did not submit it.

Hi Everyone,
First of all congrats to all who took part in this competition and completed.
To keep working in a competition for 30 days at a stretch is no mean achievement.
Each one of you is a winner already! So congrats once again!

The easiest thing in creative field (or in any field for that matter) is to comment
on others' work. Don't we all love to do that! But seriously, looking at the beautiful
works here, its really difficult to pick 'winners' from the lot.

Ok, here's how I have considered the work:
a) modeling talent (obviously!)
b) variation in models
c) lighting, texturing and rendering. Or in one word: presentation (ok, this is a modeling competition, but presentation is important. Very!)

Based on the above points I have evaluated the work and have come up with my favorites.

Great jobs guys! hehe, my favorite anishmations swooped up the render category :) Congrats also vince22, your tugboat was the star of the competition! robo3687, I voted for your LEGO truck, but apparently people don't appreciate that lego parts have to be made accurately for anything to fit at all ;)

Couldn't we have a character posing compo where the topic each day is a certain mood? "lovelorn", "defeated", "delirious"... ?

Congrats guys!! I was also a little worried if this announcement was just taken for granted coz it was a public vote. Thanks Roberto.
Thank you bitbrain and your suggestion sounds really tempting !!
cheers!
