Hiya, I am building a city scene of an alien world of metal. I am hoping someone knows of a tutorial or has sopme tips for me on how this look might be achieved.

I want windows to glow and I want a great feeling of depth tot he scene and many buildings.

Can anyone think of some texturing tips for this. Should I use layered shaders? Should I use procedural textures? Maybe texture each building individually?

I remember seeing a site where the guy who made the images for Final Fantasys backgrounds needless to say they looked great, by the images it looked like he built the geometry in 3d and then painted the details overtop of the geometry but I lost that site.

Any ideas?

well I found the artists site I was talking about (the guy who did final fantasies mattes) but i'm still not sure how he did this. Do you think that he was given a rendering of 3d geometry and he painted overtop of it and then they projected that onto the buildings? And then used them as textures in the movie?

hmmm...seems to me he prety much explained his technique: compositing. A good deal of the footage he's shown was composited together from various different design schemes. It seems sometimes they rendered digital painted canvas, working on only what would be moving in the scene, and other times it seems that he did as you suggested. There's no "right" way of going about it, just alot of ways to make it more and more "efficient". I know that this may not help you, but it's just my observation.
