View Full Version : Anatomy Thread of Grafi - 2D / 3D
grafi 09-22-2006, 06:37 AM Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've posted on CGTalk, and I'm ready to do more work this year. I guess I should reintroduce myself since I haven't been on here for a few months. I'm Taylor Leach, 17yrs old, I go to a local college where I study art which includes sculpture and life drawing. I go with a couple of local artists to a life modeling session every week where we model a live model using clay. My hobbies include 3d modeling, sculpture, drawing, music, occasionally some sleight of hand, and games.
My main focus will be on anatomy, and I'll be posting work I did from the torso anatomy lessons etc. I also might upload some of the traditional stuff I have laying around here, and show some screenshots of the new work I'm doing in 3d.
First, I have a torso I did for the Anatomy Lesson Series. This sculpture is actually not on the list, but it is by the same artist, and it has the same name. Heres the link to the sculpture - http://www.grafi.org/sebasti.jpg. I modeled this using strip modeling inside 3dsmax.

Hope you like it,
-Taylor

grafi,
Welcome aboard finally! :) It's great to see your work here. If you like, I can make suggestions via overpaint. I'm a bit tied up today but will get to one soon if you'd like one.
There are a number of great 2D/3D threads here, plenty of inspiration - I encourage you to look around, post constructive comments to others' threads, and others will do the same for you. :) Definitely check out Womball's thread as well as Helen Baq's, Claybub's, razz's and Intervain's (all folks working in both 2D and 3D - there are others that I probably haven't mentioned, but you get the idea). ;)
EDIT:
I took the liberty of going ahead and doing a paintover - hope you don't mind: :)

abyss103: thanks man, I think I've seen you on tweak a few times, its nice to see some tweak members on here.
Rebecca: Hey, Thanks for the overpaint! I fixed some of the areas you highlighted, I also messed around making my own shaders, heres what I ended up with:
Skin shader:

grafi,
You're welcome! :) Nice update, things are looking more rounded, which is good to see - cool shaders, the latter seems to have rather large bumps, perhaps reducing the size and depth would look more realistic. One thing I think you still need to tweak in the model is the corners of the form, which I think are too shallow. Hope this paintover helps:

Very nice study! It would be nice to see it from the angle of the sculpture though. Eventually your going to have to stop working with a mirror though and nudge areas. The body of this sculpture isn't even, and there are contractions which are not repeated on both sides of the body (muscles shortens but bulges, this draws the bone closer to the other bone that the muscle is attached to). Also at the abs your mesh is bowing outward. The abs are rather flat so I would push them back a bit.

Rebecca: I saw what you meant about those hard edges and contours of the body, and I think I fixed some of them.
Womball: Thanks, I updated it like you said, to put it in a pose. I also dropped the symmetry and started working on the different parts of the body that change. Thanks for the good idea :)
Heres the update:

Great modelling here. The point where you could improve is where the ribs end out in the arch of the rib cage. Maybe look at some pictures of a skeleton to see how that bone is shaped there. But it's a minor detail.
I like the rendering with the stone shader - maybe a bit too much reflection?
I'ld like to see how this turns out.

Heya grafi,
Here is that overpaint I promised:

It's for the front view sculpt...I really just tried to emphasize more planes of the head and really getting in there to define some of the smaller forms. What do you think?
Cheers,

Heres my most recent sculpt:

Please rip it to shreds, break it's legs... (plllease do, it needs a leg job :D)
C&C welcome

grafi!! :)
Step 1 I would recommend is to gather reference from the reference thread here or from the internets. ;) Post that here so we can know what you are after. You might also try to draw over the render to better visualize what you are after.
Cheers!
