Wow, can you keep posting these WIPs? I have been eager to see the process some of you amazing painters use and this is very helpful to me. Looks awesome so far.

WOW! that's so cool! love the effect you're using!
thanks guys!
:)
yes, i was from illustration background.
I haven't do any serious painting for 2 years. so this is my 1st painting that i've ever produced since 2 years ago when i've to stop illustration for CG.
anyway, i've a serious problem with my GF at the moment. So what i'm trying to do now is to finish this piece of artwork for her as promised.
well, all i can say is this is a sad new year. (Chinese new year)

this is a stage where i'm starting to play with the overall mood of the scene. i should have done this earlier. but i wasn't so confident until i've finished the head.

Looks amazing, wish i could be that talented with my hands
But one thing, The change in skin tone from the face to the shoulders is slightly distracting. just my 2 cents :D
Awesome work

loving it keep those brush strokes going. Agreed go for the depth you gave the afce to the rest of her body/scene
thanks guys~!
I'll try to fix the colors between the face and body. it wont take long tho.
i know my progress is going a little slower in this couple of days. i'll get my balls in order again real soon.

Really beautiful work so far. Can't wait to see how this comes out, you have impressive talent. It's also a very romantic idea to paint this and put it on a puzzle for your girlfriend. Hope she rewards you properly for it... ;)

I'm easy, I'm into rough stuff too. just kidding, you're doing an incredible job though. God i wish i could have talent like that to give my girlfriend, good thing she loves me just the way i am. I think she does anyway. You know what you've inspired me to do? To try and do the same thing cause it looks like such a super sweet nice thing to do. maybe she'll give you kisses and hugs. buhbyes, keep it up.:)
edit: of course I mean maybe your girlfriend will give you kisses and hugs. I'll be pretty upset if mine gave them to you. So yeah. buhbyes again :D

sanhueza, d0an, Aerestis :
thanks guys, I'm really appreciate the courages that u guys has given me. in needs of encouragement to go on like this because everytime when i was holding the brush. it keeps on reminds me that i couldn't hold her hands anymore.
Aerestis : hugs and kisses isn't really what i want tho. all i want is her heart. try not to be over confident tho. that's one of my mistakes too. try to be as nice, as caring and as loving as possible to her. sometimes the worst comes when u think it the most steady moment at a time. even a little spark could burnt down the whole forest.
just make something special for ur loved ones with ur bare hand in this valentine. eventho it's just a selfmade card, chocolate, cookies, sketces, doodle, sculpture, poem, song, love letter or even just a paper plane. it's much much stronger than buying her a diamond ring.
good luck everyone~!

Wow! That's really great work kfc! Talk about talent :D
It looks like there's something wrong with the shading at the wrist (the bone there is much to pronounced) but otherwise this work is perfect. Very nice jobb, keep it up :)

I think the wrist is looking diffrent than most, but I like it none the less. And I agree with what you say completely. Hugs and kisses aren't what I want either, to be honest she lives 600 miles from me since I moved away about 6 months ago, and we see eachother every 2 months so far. Despite this, it's one year for us on the 20th and we're still going strong. For valentines you did inspire me to make her an image, but I'm making her a song now that i've got my ideas together. She enjoys my style and says she does her homework to it and falls asleep to it because it's calm and relaxing :) And also, I agree that these things are much better than a diamond ring. Well, keep up your work, I think you have a really nice piece of work happening. It's cool to see this coming together. thanks and bye for now :D
Thanks again guys.
:)
I've already broken up with her for almost a month. kinda miss her now.
I really have to boost up because i must get it done by tomorrow. or i might don't have enough time to get it printed on puzzle and canvas.
i've just got the paterns done. going to work on the other parts.
Cheers~!http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/12.jpg http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/13.jpg
this is a little update to the painting.
well... i wanna name it " my love devotion". is that a good name?
does anyone has a better one?

This is how i work on the lotus. isn't giving it super details because i don't want it to be too distracting compare to the main character.
http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/18.jpg
Getting nearer to finishing line~!
Shoey, Theta-dot, IDownupI :
thanks again~! I guess love is really that main reason which has given me the energy to complete it. i had a frustrating morning in the office this morning. took me a whole morning to get the wacom work in this machine. seems like SGI isn't really compatible with alot of accessories.
I'll get this to be printed in to Canvas and Jigsaw Puzzle. hope i can finish it on time. Good luck to all of u guys~!
http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/19.jpg
almost there. only got one lotus.
diamond ring that i gave her for bday and engagement.
and also some lighting touch ups.
Extremely elegant rendering, I very much like your painting style.... inspiring ;)

Truely beautiful work. I appreciate the step by step look at the progress of this painting because perhaps I can use it to further my own skills. The detail, the form, and the amazingly realistic lighting of this piece leaves in well... ... awe, or perhaps that is jealousy. Would you mind showing the reference photo that you worked from.

The clouds is still quite rough now. I'm going to smoothen out everything by tonight. does anyone got any comment on the composition?
Thanks cepl and Waters. I'm gonna try to post some of my reference image when i've got it scanned. it's from a photograph of my gf and the lotus. And another cover of a magazine for the dress.
theres nothing i can crit, im just waiting till you say "done"

realllllly good
makes me want to learn how to use painter over PS:P
Diamonds are a girl best friend!
Hahaha.... i've been listening to moulin rouge sound track while i was painting this.
http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/24.jpg
I've accepted the advise from a numbers of friends. so i've added some highlights somewhere on her head. and some touch ups on her dress near the chest. added a little more contrast on her skin (body). well, the song "smoke gets in to your eyes" inspired me to do the smoke and cloud in this painting. i especially love the line written as "When our lovely flame dies, smoke gets in to your eyes....". a very touch and meaningful song.
http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/25.jpg
and here is the reference that i've promised to show.
http://splicewarestudios.com/kfc/works/valentine2003/reference.jpg
the head of a gal is my gf (obviously). as for the body, it's a magazine cover which i've found in my junk. the lotus was a photo taken by one of my student (Ee seng if i'm not mistaken his name).
well, i guess i'm going to say "done" real soon. sometimes being too much a perfectionish isn't really gonna help me to finish it. so i'll just leave some of those part with flaws.
i'm back to the final touch now. once it's done.... i'll post it in a new thread under 2d artworks for critiques.

thats beautiful man, do you know of any online painter tutorials? What brushes do you use most often?
madtank : yeah, it's really hurts.
flog : how are u? dude. i've stop doing so much of 3d at the moment because i'm starting to hate it a little because it one of the reason which made me in to this situation. anyway, i still do my job in the company tho. hahha....
Bruticus : there's alot of painter tutorials online. but traditional painting books is still the best resource to learn painting tho. the most frequent brush i use is "Loaded palette knife". honestly, that's the only brush i know.
I've just started painter seriously 2 weeks ago. my colleage- Leo (formerly my lecturer when i was still studying. he's a very good painter tho) taught me how it works once.
