For those who have both. Is one better than the other? Which would be better to start with? Is the info the same, in other words can you get by with just buying one.

And oh yeah, I'm talking about the Alias book on character rigging vs. the Gnomon DVD series on it.

Thanks,
M

Try the rigging tutorial in my website. It's intermediate to advanced knowlwdge of Maya. But there is a lot to learn there.

It's not done yet, but you can always give me input as to what you think it's missing, or might need explained better.

Best part is, mine's free. :)

i have the gnomon nurbs modelling DVDs, and am really impressed with them. it made everything crystal clear. i also bought the Melbots DVD from AW. although i havnt seen any of the rigging tutorials from either, based on my experience of the teaching style of the two, i would go with gnomon anyday.

hope that helps,

I have the A|W Rigging book, and its not bad, it goes into the same areas as the Instant Maya tuts, but with much more detail. The A|W book goes over a basic functional rig. Covers the basics nothing fancy, but the reason I like it better than the internet tuts is its cohesive and goes from start to finish. It does NOT cover advanced facial rigs though, I was a bit dissapointed about that. oh well.

I've never seen the gnomon dvd's but the entire rigging/skinning set is like 4-6 dvd's isn't it? I can't remember off hand.... point is its many more than one and they're $70 a pop. So its a tough call... $350 compared to $70. hmmm well, all I can say, for that much of a price difference, the gnomon dvd's better make me a rigging god or else I'd be disapointed. Cause if they only go a bit further than basic, I'd say stick to interent tuts.

hi!!

i prefer the gnomon way. i like these grouped ik handles. they are fantastic to work with. a very good and useful setup!!!

i suggest you to try both of them, and look which you can use better!!

and don't forget: decide what the character has to do in the animation, and try to setup he/she/it for easily do those things. for example: you don't have to setup all the fingers if you have Brad Pitt in Fight Club! (just fighting) :) so setup only the things you have to do!

cheers!

You can't really compare the a/w dvd's that way because they are all done by different industry professionals where the gnomon ones are all done by alex.

Are you guys refering to the jason scheifer(weta guy) character setup video from a/w?
