P-I REPORTER

Microsoft Corp. plans to give its Xbox 360 game console the ability to output high-definition video with better resolution than it currently does on televisions that support the capability.

The company was slated to the make the announcement today at the Tokyo Game Show. Microsoft also is using the show to demonstrate upcoming games for the Japanese market, where Xbox 360 sales have been slow.

The developments come as Microsoft prepares for the release of the rival Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii later this year.

Microsoft says it will give existing Xbox 360s the capability for 1080p output through a free software update to be distributed online later this year. The numerical designation stands for 1,080 lines of vertical resolution. The Xbox 360 already offers high-definition output at the somewhat less-advanced 720p and 1080i resolutions.

Yeah but can they make Gears of War or Halo 3 come out sooner? In my mind, until they can come out with a landmark game release they are dead man walking, especially if they come out after the PS3 release.

lol. Mr positive indeed! Im loving fight night, dead rising, saints row, blazing angels xbox live arcade street fighter, geometry wars etc.... Looks like some very kick ass games coming along too.

Id say nin and ps3 need to get THEIR skates on cos at the mo 360 has no competition at all.

this is pretty kick ass news really. One less thing for sony moaners to moan about. I guess they cant say 360 is not 'true' HD anymore even thought it blatantly was....

I can see how they can simply tell a rather new age video card to output at 1080p, but considering the size difference they're risking a serious drop in FPS arent they?

It's Movies only, not for games. And only analogue output.

Gears of WAR comes out early November, perhaps the same day PS3 drops and Halo 3 probably XMas 2007 with the trailer for the movie included.

But I submit to you another awesome game for 360 on the horizon.

I thought for movies you have to have an hdmi connection (or an hdmi adapter) which is digital. Otherwise I don't see the purpose of touting 1080p playback when it's only analog. The 360 can play games at 1080i so with the software upgrade it should do 1080p by upconverting at the very least.

1) List of popular games already out on Xbox 360:

- Elder Scrolls IV
- Ghost Recon
- Call of Duty 2
- Burnout Revenge
- PGR 3
- Fight Night 3
- DOA 4
- Dead Rising
- Need for Speed Most Wanted
- Saints Row
- Condemned
- LEGO Star Wars 2

2) Just ... can't say that I'm all-too-eager to run out on PS3 release day and spend up to $1000 on the PS3 console, accessories, and a couple games.

Even more importantly... will Halo 3 launch with an Xbox 360 price reduction too?

Hey I never said there weren't popular and good games that have been released for the 360. But let's face it, if the xbox 360 is going to compete they must have a monster release/s to guide the ship. If they didn't have Halo the first time, the xbox would have been the largest door weight ever (and the xbox 360 more than likely would have never happened). Popular games are one thing but an exclusive monster/landmark game sells millions of xbox's along with it. Not one of my friends, who are all gaming fanatics, has felt compelled to go out and buy the xbox 360 for the titles released. Their answer has been the same, "I'm waiting for Halo/Gears of War or some hugely reviewed exclusive title (bioshock?)". Otherwise, it might go the way of the Dreamcast for gambling and coming out so early. It's good news to hear they are fighting back though with Gears of War in Nov., let's hope it doesnt get pushed back.

My bad. This is how it works.

"The forthcoming dashboard update will enable support for 1080p (1920x1080) resolution; however, the current lack of an HDMI cable for the XBOX 360 means this resolution will only be supported over component and VGA. Existing games and DVDs will be able to take advantage of this resolution through the upscaling feature of the XBOX 360, but no "native 1080p content" has been prepared for release as of yet."

Movies only need it if content providers enforce it.

So it is for games? Meaning they ARE risking a frame rate drop?
And it's going to upscale DVD video? I thought DVD players rescaled any video they played to fit within whatever format of tv they were plugged into.

The 360 should handle 1080p 60fps no problem since it's consumer equivilant is better than the radeon x850 and the benchmarks for that card can do 1600x1200 60fps.

At the very bottom:

http://www.firingsquad.com/features/xbox_360_interview/page6.asp

" ATI’s gone well beyond what we see today in RADEON X850 XT."

Regarding 1080p I believe it should be native on hd-dvd, especially for games but at this point I don't know if any are going to be released on hd-dvd in the near future:

http://www.2old2play.com/News/Xbox_360_adds_1080p_Support

"...users can expect 1080p upscaling immediately on current games and DVDs while native 1080p on compatible HD DVD titles."

I think far too many people took all of the "Xbox 360 is going to be Dreamcasted" arguments to heart. And one last time for the record, Sega's woes were purely financial, they just couldn't afford to manufacture the console anymore.

As for monster releases, would you release Halo 3 on day one of the Xbox 360's launch? You're in short supply, your user base is not only going to be small but most will be financially tapped out from the console's initial purchase.

By the time Halo 3 comes out in Q2-Q3 2007, the Xbox 360 will most likely be discounted, have a 10- 12 million user base at the very least and perhaps even 4 million subscribers on LIVE. Other exclusives like Mass Effect, Too Human, Fable2 and Lost Odyssey will see 2007 releases as well.

Kaz Hirai may have said that the next generation would only start when Sony says so, but this recent announcement that the Xbox 360 will boost to 1080p HD was really Sony's last argument for the PS3 being a better machine. All of the other things like the CELL and Blu-ray are debatable as far as making the PS3 a better gaming console.

Okay, resolution was the last arguement? Now I am saddened. It seems like one thing gets announced and suddenly the core of the competitor gets ripped out from underneath them. Look, personally, I play for games. Not resolutions or online networks but for the games themselves. And Sony? Well, they just happen to have more games that I'm looking forward to.

I like Xbox games, dont get me wrong but how was that their last argument for being a better machine?
Upscaled resolutions aren't debatable, but hardware specs proven to work with real time demo's of up and coming games, and actual hardware capabilities like built in HD player and larger storage are?

Is it just me, or is the news section becoming a constant battle ground of Anti Microsoft vs Anti Sony or Anti Microsoft vs Anti Apple both sides making obcenely opinionated remarks?

PS3 is supposed to do 1080p dual screen, but I haven't really heard any news on that lately. Just have to wait and see.
