"ATI has invited reporters to a Sept. 29 event in San Francisco at which it will reveal "a new class of processing known as Stream Computing." The company has refused to divulge much more about the event other than the vague "stream computing" reference. The Register, however, has learned that a product called FireStream will likely be the star of the show."

Wow great marketing hype? What is the reason for posting a product for what it is unknown what it even is lol ?

It's just an anouncement of an event that they will be unveiling a new product at.
If you actually read the article, they give you an idea as to what they will be unveiling.

The FireStream product marks ATI's most concerted effort to date in the world of GPGPUs or general purpose graphics processor units. Ignore the acronym hell for a moment because this gear is simple to understand. GPGPU backers just want to take graphics chips from the likes of ATI and Nvidia and tweak them to handle software that normally runs on mainstream server and desktop processors.

Very interesting! Hope more news comes out after sep29.

Don't we have a CPU for that purpose lol ? sounds a bit silly :)

So am I to understand that this is the offspring of the AMD CPU and ATI GPU alliance?...

Man I hope this turns out to be true and well implemented.

Its about time the sheer computing power of graphics cards were used for something more than just powering the latest FPS game, I personally can't wait :)

So that means that when my GPU isn't doing anything and I've got something like Office running in the background, the GPU will be used to help with the CPU calculations to make Office run faster?

What happens if I'm on Vista, where the GPU will actually be used to render the Desktop? And will my GPU run full-speed, with the fan spinning fullthrottle all the time then?

Jeeeezz... Dual cores, Quad cores... SLI... GPU's doing processor work...

Madness I say!

Software programmers have a difficult enough time writing multi-threaded programs, let only rethinking their algorithms to use a streaming approach. I think this will be very popular in certain industries such as science and energy where they write their own custom code, but I don't see this being used by mainstream users anytime in the future.
