View Full Version : Solid Works?

Hey guys, I'm a real newbie here as well as a newbie to higher end 3D.

I use Lightwave (and Wings 3D), but my dad who is an Engineer uses Solid Works at work. I played with it a little it seems really nice for precision modeling, has anyone else used it for 3D rather then just CAD work?

PS: If there is a better place to post this question let me know and I won't post software questions here.

I study Industrial Design Engineering and use Solidworks very much there, but also in personal projects like this: blender (http://www.xs4all.nl/~vbest/finalaardbei1024.jpg)
I modeled the blender in solidworks, exported it to 3ds max and modeled/textured the rest in 3ds max. For me modeling products in solidworks is much easier than in 3d studio (duh it's made for product design). The more complex organic shapes though can better be made in other software.

I wouldn't use it for much else than mechanical type modeling. I haven't tried, but I can't imagine trying to do anything freeform or organic in SolidWorks. Even given it's strength in mechanical modeling, I would still prefer a non-engineering oriented modeler (take your pick) for most mechanical stuff because SolidWorks doesn't really allow for a freeform approach to modeling.

The only reason I might use Solidworks now would be if I needed to get the proportions completely right. And maybe for making some items that need to be made mechanical correct just because I proficient with the program.

I would stick with your Lightwave and Wings. Solidworks is only good for mechanical, and even there it has limitations (many).

Thanks guys, I'll keep that stuff in mind. It's good to know that someone out there has heard about it though.
