If it's a file open error then you oughta get back to the drawing board unless you have a backup file. That's preatty simple, just set beck files to 9 and turn on autosave for 5 minutes, so simple, and no more tears are going to be shed :p . Greetz:beer:

Check if you have enough free space on you windows-disk. max needs to have free space in the temp-dir..
If this doesn't solve the problem, I'm afraid your file is corrupt... (if your maxfile is 0kb in size, it's definately broke).
:thumbsdow
good luck!

Well I definitely have the room, and the file is 968kb in size, but the darned thing just doesn't wanna open.
I was hoping to bring this one back to life before resorting to the backup files and having to start all over on some areas, but it seems that I may have to anyways.
I just can't believe that MAX doesn't have a recover function in it like AutoCAD. I guess having the same parents doesn't necessarily insure things like that.
Thanx Guys!:wavey:

If you want, you can email the maxfile to me.. Not that I have some sort of secret maxfile-recoverer (sadly), but maybe it's something with your max and/or system configuration that's causing this?... just wild guesses though..

I tried throwing it on my laptop and trying it there. No dice either. I looked at my backup file and it's not too terribly behind. I suppose.
I am modeling simple conveyor so I suppose I should whine too much. It just bugs the hell out of me that there isnt any way to parse these files. This isn't the first time that this has happened.
I wonder what the big time studios do ?? I guess they autosave and backup the hell out of everything.

By the way, Thanks MagicM for the offer, but my boss would chop my nuts off if I sent out a file. LOL He's kinda paranoid.
Thanks anyways:beer:

You might try importing the file into another program if you have one that will read Max files. Or try opening the file with a viewer like R.H. Deep Exploration (which we use).
They may filter out any bad scripts, etc.

well... piece of advice that it dont happen again...
see that incremental save button? USE IT!!!
this is no flame...but 3 hours and no backup will get you into this problem.
sorry about the loss but again....u know why:rolleyes:

Now don't forget here people, I DID save as often as possible, and I assumed that the file would be workable today. My computer didn't crash or anything yesterday. It's as if the file decided over night that it didnt wanna work.
I didnt lose part of the file, I lost the WHOLE thing.:annoyed:
I didn't think I'd have to set my incremental that high because I save manually every 20 or 30 minutes.
By the way Jarch, that isn't a bad idea. I don't have any viewer prog to do this, but I may be able to parlay this "tragedy" into my boss springing for a copy. I should have thought of that earlier:thumbsup:

cont be so touchy....if u save incremental every 15 /20 minutes then theres no reason you should have lost 3 hours of work as youve originally posted.
now dont get irritated for what i m gonna say.:p
incremental is that lil plus sign that will save ur file as myfile.max1
myfile.max2
myfile. max3
and so on....
so when theres a big unexplainable crappy ass problem..
u just go back to the previous version.personally i find it helpful for more reasons than above.
i can go back to where i thought it was what i wanted and rework the scene.then compaee if i need to....:lightbulb

Well that's actually a good idea. I didn't mean to snap or anything, but you can see how frustrating it is to save every 20 minutes or less and the damn thing doesn't work. Usually when I lose files it's due to a blue screen of death or power failure or some other thing.
I think I need to unplug and go get some chinese food. That always makes life better.

PS. I'll definitely start doing incrementals more often. I don't like getting burned more than once.
