View Full Version : Still: "have you got any coffee?"
Breuer 01-30-2003, 03:28 PM Inspired by the latest edition of 3D world where I saw a brilliant cup of coffee.
I wanted to make my own and here it is. Rendered with hdri i LW 7.

nothing really to crit... the picture looks good...
maybe just lower the DOF a bit, it looks a bit weird on the glass itself.
Great work!

That's a really nice render! I have one recommendation: a little steam coming from the cup would add quite a bit to the image.

Looks very good.
You should check out the coffee plugin at flay.com. It will help you get that deepening/murky effect as the coffee gets darker toward the bottom. Unfortunately, the coffee in your image looks almost thick, like motor oil. I'm not trying to be rude, it's just heavier-looking than coffee, to me at least.
Just looked up the shader plugin.
Still, very good job. Keep at it. :)

Very nice, indeed!
But why is everybody modelling coffee cups, heads or cars? I would like to see some more individual things here. Just my 2€...

I think youre right Cant. Many people seem to be modelling the same things, and as you mentioned , heads, cars and coffeecups are all pretty frequent.
But I also think there is a reason for this, as these are all very relevant objects that represent different techniques in 3D. If you master this technique it is much easier to model something similar or within the same category. Coffee is obviously not a modelling challenge, but a light and surface challenge. Heads - organic modelling with details and texturing, cars - technical modelling...
Glad you like the image though and thanks for the comments guys. Ive downloaded the coffee plugin and will post an update soon

Looks great man, I like it. Nice wood texture too.
My suggestion is that the blur seems a bit too powerful and abrupt, I would tone it down a bit. I also noticed that where there is no reflection on the coffee it is too dark, almost black, I think it needs to be lighter/more brown, or have something being reflected in it, it looks like a black hole as it is now.

Very nice render, though it looks a lil stale ( and no not the coffee :p) but yeah you need some more stuff in there. Add some chaos to the scene, we're living in a world where peeps aren't that perfect. Add a spoon with a bit of coffee in it, add steam otherwise the coffee itself looks stale and very cold*shiver*. BLack coffee makes a boring scene, maybe add some sugar on the counter, a napkin with coffee stains from wiping the bottom of the cup. You get the picture :)
BTW ask yourself this question, would your coffee look like this 7:45am in the morn and you're at home not dressed and you start work at 8am but you live 20mins away :)
Excellent render though

would your coffee look like this 7:45am in the morn
No, and the cup would really be a mug capable of holding 4 liters without getting cold.
And it would be tea... with a large teabag steeping in there, too, filled with cute, fuzzy, little animals... just because THAT is what it takes to cheer me up in the morning.
That, or essence of gelfling.

"would your coffee look like this 7:45am in the morn?"
Ironically I don't drink coffee, BUT, if I did, it most certainly wouldn't look anything like that.
I've been experimenting a bit with the coffee plugin, but haven't really achieved anything decent yet. Anyone know any tutorials on this plug?
