View Full Version : Render or composite?
Im making a short, and one of the scenes takes place in this corridor (very WIP) now theres gonna be a bit of dof in the room, but the only action that takes place is a character leaning out of the room and checking the hallway. The camera is stationary.
Would it be smarter to render the charcter separately and composite him later on in for ex. combustion?
If so what would be the smartest way? To render a shadow pass for him and so on?
I intend on using Brazil, but what with the render times im hoping to "cheat" my way through most animation.

Heya,
Yeah, I'd most definitely composite - regardless of renderer used.
Render the background once, save to a nice 16bit png - set that as the background (screen mapped, no filtering, etc.)
Then apply a matte/shadow material to the entire scene (sans your character.
Then just render the character out in that, using a couple of lights to fake the bounce light.
Should render much faster and be more flexible.

Although you got the answer you were looking for already (and one that i agree with too)
I would say always render in layers and passes wherever possible. Little tweaks to color, saturation and shadow density can be done quickly in any composite package, whereas they would require a whole re-render to fix otherwise.
just my 2 cents.
Yeah i knew it in theory, but ive never really tried the render passes for real, and with 3D its so much to learn so i figure its better to ask in case the render passes in max were like the boleans (meaning they suck).
