Title: A storm is coming...
Name: Carl-mikael Lagnecrantz
Country: Sweden
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, ZBrush

Hi cg people, it has been a while since I posted anything here in the gallery but now I have finally had some time to work on something for my own pleasure and hopefully also yours.

I had a very good time creating this image. I did many different renders and passes for this piece wich took quite a long time since the scene is quite dense with polygons. All the passes were then taken into Photoshop for compositing. I hope you like it.

Hey CML, how are you these days?
Another great image from you, I like the mood and the character(s). The only thing that catches my eye a bit is the composition. The top head is fighting for space with the branch above it. And something feels a bit strange about the two fence poles and the hand. Also the thumb is lost in this pose, giving its left hand an strange shape.

Cool stuff,

Rens

So this is what you've been doing on your vacation. Looking good as usual. =)
My only crit would be that the trees feel somewhat translucent but it does make it look like a fantastical place so I guess it's intentional coming from you. Keep up the great work man!

Rens - Hey, thanks for the feedback. I'm fine, been working like crazy but now I have some time off. I hope you're good too.

living_for_cg - Thanks:)

irananimator - Thank you!

Raul-Reznek - Thanks man, I appreciate that. I always liked your work too.

Silverwing - Thank you very much!

THECLYKE - Appreciated!:)

JCGA - Hey Janne, thanks! Yeah the trees are slightly translucent and that was intentional. I did that to give them a slightly surreal feel. See you down the road.:)

Here is the characters pose from another angle, looks a bit funny to me, although I did not spend as much time on the backside of him. At first I was going to make this character into a sculpture of some sort, perhaps in wood, but decided later it would be cooler with a more fleshy approach.

Of course the character is great (love the shading on his clothes), but I like the path the most! :) Trees are perhaps not as great. Trees are hard to do though.

OSSYFFER - I'm glad you like it!

bitBrain - Thanks, I agree the trees are the weakest element if you look at it from a realistic view, but I was thinking that who knows, maybe trees look like that in that place hehe. Thanks for the comment on the path, I worked quite a bit on that. There are actually also some ants there, although you can't really see them at this resolution.:)

Since this was never going to be anything else than a still I did a lot of compositing work in Photoshop on this piece. I counted to 38 different passes rendered including all masks, wich is a bit crazy. This was also rendered at a resolution of 3600x2700. Here is a little tip I'd like to share about scaling an image down without loosing too much of the small detail:

Scale down two copies of the image, on the first use "Bicubic" resampling in Photoshop(default) and on the second use "Nearest neighbor". The Nerest neighbor option will pick the closest pixel in the original image that corresponds to the scaled down location inatead of averaging the pixels like default. By default if you have one white pixel and one black you will get a grey pixel when scaling down and therefore you loose some of the clarity and contrast in the image. The drawback of using "Nearest neighbor" is that edges of objects or places of high contrast tend to get jaggy, so copy the Nearest neighbor image into a layer on top of the Bicubic scaled image and by using a mask paint away the jaggies, revealing the more anti-aliased image below. I hope this can be of some help to somebody.:)

cheers,
CML

Brilliant style! I'm not so fond of most of the work in the Finished Work gallery, but this is great! Very nice colours, very nice!

Freaky character :) I'd love to see a close up of the faces, especially the left-most one (left to us, their right). Do you have any story/background to go with the character? Maybe a Frankensteinian experiment gone wrong? As mentioned before, the composition is a bit odd but I like it regardless.

Btw, did you use Polyboost for the trees Mr Polyboost? :D
