I just had a quick question about the Cap Holes Modifier. It seems to lower my polycount by a great deal. I went from 3500 polys to 1800 after using Cap Holes. Im not complaining because the model looks the same just with lower polys now. I just thought the modifier fills in holes in the mesh, so technically wouldnt it raise your polycount if you had holes? Can someone please explain why its lowering my polycount? Thanks in advance.

Not really, do you still hav ethe pre capped model? can you post it? it would be nice to have a quick looksie at it and see why its doing this.

At a guess though I'm thinking that maybe the cap hole mod also does a weld verts operation before capping, bascily to close any tiny holes. I'm guessing your mess has a lot of unwelded verts and possibly even multiple co existant polygons....

Anyway, hard to tell without a look. :curious:

Well, wasnt sure exactly what you would need to see, so if theres something not shown in the pic that you need to see let me know and I will post another shot. Heres the pre Cap Hole shot.

And the post Cap Hole shot. I must have had a load of unwelded verts if it does perform a weld. :D

Try, as a test, windowing all your verts and welding them. Look at the number and see if that makes up for the difference.

ill bet this is an editmesh right?

edt meshes counts the hidden lines wich make a bunch of tries in its FACE count but editpoly doesnt count the hidden lines wich gives you quads
i was testing to duplicate your results and
by making a box 3x3x3 and converting to edit mesh and deleted a vert you get left with tris (102)(caped 52) but with poly you get 50(caped 51)

so with face counts 2 of the same objects one mesh one poly
the mesh would take up twice as much as the poly sinse mesh is counting all the tries rather than jsut quads

after you put the cap holes it cuots the quads not tries

Cap Holes is a poly based modifier; it's counting polys, not tris, after adding the Cap Holes modifier. Add a Turn to Mesh on top of the cap, see if the results are more with what you were expecting.

if you look at your two images, you can see the triangles in the top image, but not in the bottom one....

Ahh....makes sense to me now. :scream: I was wondering why my model had such a high polycount, but all along it was counting the tri's. I will just have to remember that when mesh modeling. Thanks everyone for the feedback. :D
