View Full Version : XSI Workstation Specs.

Trying to add a new workstation to the mix, what do you think of these specifications...
Dual core 3.4 Ghtz pentium 4 processor
2 gigs RAM (DDR2)
Nvidia Geforce (something with 256 MB)
I left other 'not so important' details like hard drive... etc.
Ok I know this is not the greatest but do you think I can get away with this? I have seen a lot of juicy specs on AMD systems but I am a bit skeptical since I have never used AMD machine before.

Choosing an XSI-workstation is fairly easy.. just buy the biggest box that fits in your budget and give it an Nvidia card. Done.

That's slightly higher spec than the machines we used to use at college, they ran fine.

May I suggest to switch the processor from the P4 to an E6400-6600 ? It will run cooler, less noise and power consuption and if you later will switch to xp64, you'll be all set.

might i sugest u put in 4 gigs of ram, seen as how everything is going 64, u might want to take advantage of it!!
last week i got a dual duo xeon 2ghz here at work, man this box is flying!! pitty management wouldn't spend the extra $$ on more ram, so i'm only sitting at 2gigs

I was skeptical about AMD also, at the last studio I was working we only had Intel procs but i decided to go with AMD for my personal workstation and I got 2xAmd opteron dual core 64 biti and Tyan KWE8 motherboard and it runs really stable and really fast, no complains about. I have only 1 gb of ram that is very very little but I hope that in the short future to get 4 or 6 gb so that i can take advantage of the 64 biti.

CORE 2 DUO, don't use those tired old P4's...

Contact them directly. At AGC they were running a Dell with Daul Xeon's, Quadro, etc. The rep was talking to me all about it and told me to go the Woodcrest route if I was going 2xProc. AMD's are less power hungry though and 4 gigs will be a lot better. Good luck. But hey will you let us know what way you end up going?

go with a core 2 duo. buying a decent machine today means upgrading your cpu to core 2 quad in future.
if you want to buy a xeon system go with the macpro. here you get the most for your money (strange, isn't it?) and you get also a really good built quality and well... the possibility to use mac osx if needed (final cut, the now really cheap shake and what is to come in future).
