Hi there,
I've been having some trouble seting up this foot rig in maya...

I have this locator at the back of the foot that will controll a lot of the foot motion, I am tring to set it up so that the gimble axis line up ok and are usable for animation...
As you can see in no. 1. it's a bit wonky, if I change the Local rotaion order around it lines up nicely but that isn't the rotaion order I want to use fo animation. Is there some way to rotate the whole gimble thing around so that I can use would look like no.2 but have the Rotation order of no.1

It's pretty hard to explain, but I do want to animate with gimbal on this one to keep clean info coming out of the foot rig...

Anyway hopefully someone knows..

thanks - petey

hi,
i use zxy for my foot, so i can twist it and i can still rotate my foot on x... try to find where you need the main rotation for your object, and see the rotate order like a hierachy where in the case above, y is the first and main axis ( the upper in the hierarchy), x the second, and z the third that will be in gimbal lock with y, so try to find your prefered axis for your object, and set your rotate order according to that.

i hope this explication will help you, and say you one thing, you can`t avoid gimbal lock problem, but you can always minimize it. ;)

Olivier.

Thanks, I have read a fair bit about Gimble lock lately,
but because my characters feet were modeled on a slight angle only one order will give me a axis that aims straight down the foot. And I am trying to set it up to be animated with gimble.
So is the answer to make sure your character is modeled with every joint ending up on a right angle?

well, Im not to sure how else to get the best rotation order setup.....
I'd like to post up my rig. But I can't get the file under 40k so if anyone has a bit of webspace or knows of anywhere I could put it, I'll post it up!
