I re-rendered my "Triebflügeljäger" model at high-resolution and finished textures. The lighting is done with my E-Light MAXScript.

I really hope you like it :)

PS. Shame this resolution still doesn't show all the rivets I textured!!:surprised

yeah that rocks
but the shape is really bizzare.
:D

you mean the upper part can spin?
but anyway, i really luv it.

Nice uhhh, what is it........... ????? Well I like the model and the render great job. Is that the plane of the future!? Not only do you get a plane ride but you can lose your lunch at the same time, hehehe. :D :hmm:

hehe, look at it a bit more closely, not the whole cabine is rotating, just a small ring where the 3 big wings are attached ;)

skyraider, I love your ideas, the textures and the script which is especially nice, I use it all the time :D

not of the future.... of the past. The "Triebflügeljäger" was a jet/helicopter hybrid of sorts from the end of wwII. I dont believe a prototype was ever built though they did do wind tunnel testing

great model skyraider, really nice to see some unusual aircraft

This looks really good but I think it could be improved by turning up the specular a bit. Right now it looks too dull and although the render is very good, it still doesn't look totally real.

I think part of the reason it may not look totally real is that there is no sense of scale. I get the idea this is supposed to be a big machine but there is no reference to size. I think a more dramatic render from below with it stretching above the camera would provide a good deal of scale but also a simply environment would work too, there is a pretty decent tree to be had from www.denfo-graphics.com that you could just import and duplicate a few times. Dunno, it's up to you. Looks good though for the most part.

Thanks guys! :)

Arai is right. The Trieb' was a WWII design. Never flew.
It's supposed to lift up vertically with the rotor that's on a rotatable ring around the sigar-shaped body. Power is provided by tip-mounted ramjets(!) which contain booster rockets inside them for starting them up. I hope to make an animation of that at some point... :)
For those who want to know more: http://www.luft46.com/fw/fwtrieb.html

White Rabbit, I totally agree. I just wanted to show off the model in this render. As for the specular... a bit would be nice indeed, although there is no directional light (necessary for highlights) and overall the aircraft is really weathered and pretty matt.
I plan to do more renders... with background :)

Here's another render I did of it, in case you guys missed the aircraft post:

Thanks again all! :)

I don't think I would want to be the test pilot attempting to land that thing for the first time. Looking over your shoulder through a rocket assisted prop for ground reference.... NOT FUN.

Awesome render and model you have there!

i really like the last link you posted too!

how many lights did you need with your script? (if any)

Skyraider3D

Thanks Jeff!
O yea, I forgot to tell my lights setup for the first render...

I used a hemisphere with 4 segments (amounting to 341 lights), a photo of some mountains for the light colours and 512 pixel shadowmaps. Quite a heavy setup. The reason for that were the small wheels and thin parts (wings, landing gear struts). The wheels needed a high-resolution shadowmap because they are so small, while the thin parts needed lots of lights to not cause artifacts. The Trieb was therefore not really an ideal subject for E-Light, but the end result is nice, I think :)
O yeah, to get the low-angle directional light with it, I squashed the hemisphere (the lights will follow!) and pulled the light targets out off the center (where the model was too) and a bit up (to the center of the model).

Rendertimes were fairly long with this setup and resolution, but not too bad really. I did some small test which take a few minutes and the final render.... well I just let it go and watched a movie or something :)

BlueMeany, you're right! I put some rear-view mirrors in the cockpit, by the way, but still it would've been a true nightmare to fly. I personally see it as a rotor driven manned anti-aircraft missile :D
...(it was supposed to quickly intercept enemy bombers from anywhere without the need for runways)

That's great work

www.luft46.com is a great place for inspiration.

Maybe if you found an old shed or aircraft hanger you could do a nice composite pic with this?

Are all your textures hand drawn or did you take from photo's? just wondering...I'm new to texturing and have no idea :)

E-light is good...

Coolmanmatt - THANKS! :)

Cafeineman, all textures are 100% handdrawn.
Here's the diffusemap of both aircraft (mixed) at half the resolution. Too bad it doesn't show all detail anymore, it was just too big though to post it completely...

Here are some samples at 1:1 scale though:

Finally the rivets show! Heh heh :)

I made my own font for the codes :) >> http://fonts.skyraider3d.com

--------------

I couldn't resist and made an E-Light render with the other texture too. The white burnt out a bit, but that's not too much of a drama I hope :)

I just noticed the Swastika on the craft, is there any logical reason for it or did you just choose to make it a nazi aircraft? I do know the Nazi's tried some crazy stuff...

I am not flippin out or anything, I actually don't care, but some people might =)

There has alot of minor detail fall off that you will never able to get it right with air bursh. Due to the age and temperature. A metalic metarial will change their shapes: blend, crumble, etc.

You need to have soem reference photos in hand. You may use it as overlay in photoshop. Or, you can follow the ton of the fall off and air bursh it (but it will be tough)

WhiteRabbit.obj,
yes, it's a real German WW2 aircraft project.
It was actually designed by Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau in the last year of the war. Germany's defeat ended this projects development, although after the war the design was studied thoroughly by the Americans, resulting in a few other oddballs that did fly. Check here if you're curious:

http://208.56.150.96/wheel/images/VSTOLWheel/pics/24.jpg

I just love these mad designs the Germans came up with. Some are quite ridiculous even.

I removed the swastika from the texture though as it might be a bit too graphical. If anyone is offended by the swastika, feel free to let me know and I'll try and edit them out of these pictures. Just the real plane would have had them and I'm just trying to be as accurate as possible with my model, you see. I hope that's OK. My apologies to those offended.

HapZungLam, I am not quite following you. Could you explain again please? Thanks! :)

Very nice job I love it. Very nice texture work and the lighting works as well. Glad to see some research into this and all. All I can say is cool!

Hey dude, add it back in for all I care, I was just askin! Anyone offended by a swastika on a plane that is attempting to be historical is gonna have a rough time in life.

That's really crazy that it's a real design though. I know all about VTOL aircraft but I have never seen this particular thing, pretty awesome. Keep up the good work!

Ronnie,

Fantastic work! Really like the big render, very nice. After looking at your textures I've decided I need to work on my texturing a little more. Great attention to detail.

Cheers

Tdmack, cheers. And you're definately right concerning research!!! About half(!!) of the time I spend on my models goes into research!

Whiterabbit, no worries. I removed them swastika from the texture before you commented on it :)

O.Martin, gL_spear, Equinoxx, innseuv, Glitchwolff - THANKS!!! :)

Evan, drop me a mail anytime you run into problems. I mailed you this morning too, btw.

Someguy, it's called the Triebflügeljäger, which is German for power-wing fighter. I hope to animate it taking off at some point... firstly I am building a big bomber model for it to attack! ;)

Thanks all! :)
