View Full Version : Quick Digital Airbrush Question
Terro 09-16-2006, 06:36 PM I have a little problem when it comes to using the Digital Airbrush brush in Painter IX.5 . When I do low oppacity sprays with it I get these saturation rings on them. It kind of looks like a grainy spray at first, and if I continue to lay more paint over it it does start to look normal. What I'm looking for is to get a normal Photoshop type of airbrush spray going.
I'm not sure if the brush is at fault (I use it at default size 53, just drop the oppacity) or is it the canvas im working on. I usually make my backround be normal plain paper and work on a empty layer.
Please help me out if you can. I want a smoth airbrush effect at a descent size.

I only experience that with low opacity brushes when working on layers. I tend to hit the banding areas with a little "just add water" blender and it smooths it out nicely. When I work directly on the canvas, I normally don't experience it.

Hi Terro,
Using WinXP Home SP2 with Painter IX.5, I don't experience that problem when:
working on the Canvas
working on Layers
Opacity is set to the default 9% and with Opacity set to 2%
If you're using Painter IX, have you installed the Painter IX 9.1 and Painter IX.5 Updates? If not, you might want to install them to see if it solves your Digital Airbrush problem. I believe some color banding problem was solved with one of these updates.
Kraal is right about not using the Layer Composite Method Gel. I found two more Composite Methods that produce the same or a similar effect to that displayed when the Layer Composite Method is set to Gel so you might want to avoid all three:
Gel
Hard Light
Gel Cover
Here's a screen print showing brushstrokes painted on the Canvas and on a Layer above those strokes with Opacity set to 2% and the Layer set to Composite Method Gel Cover:

I have the update and I still experience some banding on outer edges of strokes on layers, none on the canvas. But I experience this in Photoshop, too.

Thank you for all the speedy replies. I've somewhat figured out the issue on my end. It happens to me when I work on a empty layer, so what I do now is just copy/paste the layer underneith and paint directly on the copy. The airbrush paint seems to spread out perfectly when it has something solid to land on, even if it's a white fill. I've noticed a lot of changes using this technique already. The glow brush reacts completely different when used on a blank layer , then on already painted layer as well.
PS: Running IX.5 on XP
