Hello Everyone,
Have any of you seen the trailer for ghostrider? The fire looks AWESOME. I have watched the Pyrotechnics DVD from gnomon and gotten some good tips for making realistic looking fire. The examples in maya are average as well, but how do we take it to the next level?

The Fire in Ghostrider has beautiful texture, shading and motion. I wanted to start a discussion about fire in maya because it is such a vital part of digital effects.

So far I take the fire examples and tweak them to meet me needs, but I never seem to be completely satisfied. Anyone have any thoughts, or tips?

I'd love to know, too.
I have also seen flames created with real flow at http://www.nextlimit.com/realflow/img/videos/demoreel06.html
on their new demo reel. No idea how they did.

The current best off-the-shelf tool for creating fire is Maya Fluids.
Fantastic4's Human Torch was Fluids, and AFAIK Ghost Rider's flames are Fluids aswell.

The fire-presets indeed are good starters, but you can explore new approaches if you start doing your own from scratch.

There are 3 important things to keep in mind,

1. The higher the resolution, the better the fluids (& fire) will look.
2. Motion blur really helps to sell fire, experiment both rendertime & post motionblur (with RSMB etc).
3. Crucial part of the look of fire also comes in the compositing stage.

(realflow's fire doesn't look bad, but you can tell its a meshed & shaded surface)

the biggest problem with mayas fire presets is speed. Its WAY too slow. Try increasing the rate scale.

Also turn on a high frequency opacity texture with grid texturing turned to 1

You can make the fire less consistant by putting an expression on the density emission rate

I always reconfigure the fire preset to work without fuel. Its just complicates things

I am really going for a controlled explosion rather like in an engine.
Is fluids the weapon of choice?

fluids is deffinately the way to go for explotions. I reccomend you check out Gnomon DVD Protechnics, awesome source for learning quality texturing and shading of Explotions.

I am trying to create a fire Goddess, like a mermaid, but half fire instead if fish. I like what was said about comping, can anyone reccomend some comping techniques to enhance the fire look and texture? I am very new to comping.
