abyss103,

I recommend checking out this thread:

Personal Sketchbook Primer and Tutorial / Workshop Guide (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=403198)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=403198

and in particular, the Shading Tutorial linked in the first post. :) I really think that you should try this, as you will get a lot out of the exercise for shading in grayscale. Take a look at the other work that has been done from the original exercise in the SPOTLIGHT area (links are in the above thread as well) as there is a lot of great inspiration there.

As well I would encourage you to participate in the ongoing Workshop:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198

Even if you can't do all 50, it's a great way to get figurative practice!

I look forward to seeing your posts! :)

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

Hey, Abyss. I like the b&w drawings. I know it's real fun doing them :D It may be just my preference, but I like to make it not b&w, but monochromatic. Of course b&w might be monochromatic, bus now were talking about b&w like only black and white and nothing more. See this thread, which I really loved looking at and now am following the progress HERE (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42514) (hope you haven't seen it already). You'll find some monochromatic drawings there, which are awesome if you ask me. Very inspirational stuff. Be sure to look it through. So, just that for now to give you some inspiration for your imaginational work. For anatomy learning you know, life drawings master studies

Hope it helped. I'll stop by here again for sure to see what's new :)

Hiya Abyss!

Really great start here! I read your comment about wanting things to come to life more in Razz's sketchbook, so I decided to pop over!

I really enjoy your black and white sketches - they really have a graphic feel from the high contrast.

Some suggestions on the high contrast work:

Since you're going for only positive/negative space, try varying the line width on your drawings to make the spaces between black and white more interesting. This will give it the interest and "life" I think you're after - without sacrificing your graphical, bold style. I did a quick paintover (not the best, but to give you an idea) of one of your drawings above to illustrate this better - I can show better than I can explain!

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j203/sillypaintbrush/paintover.gif

Hope this helps, and I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Hugs,
Gracie

hey all!

thanks alot for all the kind words and advices.

Rebeccak: i just browsed though those pages you recomended. they are awesome.
i will surely try out, some of them. i'm working on my new reel beside my daily job, so i'm not sure i got time, but i'll sure try. i know it would be a great exersice.

NR43: thanks alot. i was inspired by the marvel, universe x comicbook, that i'm reading atm.

razz: thanks for dropping by. that was a killer link you send. man he's good. i actually had some of his illustrations, in my inspiration folder already.
very inspirrering.

mynti: thanks for great help and suggestions. the b&w's very actually a little experiment i did because i was inspired by the very rough look in, that universe x comicbook, i'm reading. aswell as to studie light and shadow. i'm not very good at that.
next time i'll try varying the brush more, like you suggested.

here's few more of my recent work.

Really good looking speedpaints of deer and girl. I'd love to see a background behind that deer. Reminded me of the speedpainting topic in CA.org where it was something about an undead deer. If it's not a deer don't bite me, don't know all the animals in english. I don't know all of them in my language!

Glad the link helped. That artist is true inspiration indeed.

Great to see new stuff from you :bounce:

Nice seeing those speedpaints of yours! Really great, the sci-fi theme is one I'm interested in but rarely touch. Keep it up!

rasmusW
09-27-2006, 08:55 PM
hey you two!

razz: hehehe... yeah! it's a deer. it would probally be my next model (after finishing the two i go going now).
sounds like a thread i better check out. could use some inspiration for some other versions of it.

mynti: thanks alot, grace. i actually very rarely do sci-fi stuff myself. the drawing just went in that direction and i followed:).

well, here's some kind of "master copy". i did a small tutorial i found in one of my grandpa's old oil-painting books. thought i could transfer the same principle to ps.
maybe i'll add some canvas texture to it, but for now it's fine.
hope you like it.

abyss103,

Looks like you're off to an excellent start! I agree with the others that the b&w style is pretty cool and could be developed into something really nice, if you wanted to go that way. Also, I like the last 'master copy' you did. Nice work.

Hey, Abyss. Nice looking char on the last post. But I would like you to put a little bit more work on the shading and make it look more realistic. You know, getting rid of those hard edges. But if your aiming for this style, forget what I've said. Funny, If this would have a full body I imagine him standing tall and holding an axe or sitting behind a table and playing with a bloody knife. It's not my fault, this guy just can't be good! Or standing in front and having a bunch of bad guys behind him. Ok, it's my fault...

rasmusW
10-05-2006, 07:06 PM
hey buddy!

haha... -thanks for the kind words. i did actually aim for this look, for this one. i'm really loving the style of the "earth-x" comicbook. you can see some of the pages here. (http://www.blacklinefever.com/artists/johnpaulleon/johnpaulleon.html) i used one of my doodles from the long render pauses at work for reference.
-after your thoughts i have to make a whole picture with him.
i'm also thinking doing one of my previous b&c sketches, with reel color and some kind of background.

Isn't it like inking? B&w stuff. Nice looking pages of that sketchbook. You should try and see more. What I'm pretty sure you'll like is a manga of Nihei Tsutomu called "Blame!". Nihei is awesome. Look HERE for some examples from the manga. What about that kind of style, eh?

Haha, would love to see that one pushed further  Just find the correct style for him. Oh, but whatever you choose, it will be the correct one!

rasmusW
10-06-2006, 10:32 AM
hey razz!

yeah! -it's like inking. but in "earth x" there's also color...
i googled nihei (your link didn't wrk:) ) and yeah! it looked awesome. i'm not the biggest manga fan, but i like some of it, including this one.
i'm thinking of some kind of "zombie gang in an alley" shot... for him.

Very cool work on 'mouse' especially - from the profile view, I think the forehead and back of the head look a bit misshapen - but it depends on what you're going for in the look of your sculpts. Are these meant for practice, or for a specific project? :)

Cris-Palomino: thanks alot. will eisner is one of my all time favorites, both story-telling and drawings are amazing. (r.i.p will).
bought his sketchbook. it's really fun to see his progress throughout a page.
i'll have to check out hernandez bros.

Anthonie: silo2 is still beta, but i already love it. the displacement brushes works really well. i still haven't come around the new uv-mapper (but it sure looks cool).

Hey, Abyss. Great models. In my opinion, they need a little more polishing, but looking nice nevertheless. About the "rended-doodles", I'd say, pick one and model the bastard!! The birdie maybe, or the right monster in the last page. Keep posting your stuff, mate :bounce:

lovely 'render sketches' here, especially that first batch, some of those are wonderful, and I'll add my voice to those asking for a digital colour of a couple of them! The anatomy practice isn't bad, but some of the musculature on the upper arm and shoulder in particular is a bit off, I'd say maybe try to find a picture of a similar pose to learn where your stuff could be tweaked? The 3d models all look great though, as far as my veru limited knowledge goes!

Reminds me a bit of Sid the Sloth, though probably because I just saw Ice Age the Meltdown ;) The musculature on the arms and legs makes it seems like there shouldn't be a lot of fat, and then the belly area is very spherical. The roundness could be an alien thing, but I would expect a bit of sag if it were.

Really nice sketchbook, tons of character in the sketchs, and the 3d work is very nice. :)

razz
01-30-2007, 09:54 PM
Hi, Abyss. In my opinion, the monster would look really great if the muscles would be defined slightly more like human's muscles. You've made some very interesting anatomical changes. I'm not saying you shouldn't do that, it's a monster however. But it still has to look believable. Biceps would be great to see, trapezius put in place, deltoid a bit differently shaped, etc. And for the muscles to have thei connections. Now I see you've shown a little indication of the clavicle, but the deltoid goes way behind it. Where it attaches then? And the legs seem a bit broken, going away from the body and then, below the knee, coming back in. Though it might only be the angle at which I'm seeing the model.
It's just a suggestion to make the anatomy more believable, more human like in this case, because the creature is sort of human-ish.
I really like the pelvic area though :bounce: Serattus magnus showing, alienish abdominals :D

I'm sure looking forward to seeing this model more worked on!

rasmusW
02-01-2007, 09:03 AM
hey you two!

-thanks for the nice comments.
sadly i might put him a bit on hold. the dominance war challenge is starting soon and i think it would be a good exercise to practice some concept/modeling stuff. and fun too, ofcause.

kary: you know, i think you are right, he does look a bit like an alien sid. about the musculature. i just kinda doodled him out, without really thinking of anatomical issues. so i might give him a more sacky flesh, when i re-model him or the other way around. -more muscles.

razz: thanks alot buddy. i will surely think of these things when i do him. but like i said before, i kinda just did what i thought looked cool at the given time, so the anatomy is way off, some places.
you are right about the legs. i'll see if i can post some more pics of him, tonight, so you can see him form more angles. i also did a quick start of his armor.

btw. sorry for jumping so much from project to project, without finishing. it's the curse of finding new and exciting things to do...

Great stuff, Abyss! Like the value study, great work on that. You should do more of those, push your sketches to a speedpaint, maybe even more if it turns out really great. The sculpted monster's head looks good, though a bit unclear to me. Does it have a mouth, ears? Pretty bumpy on the face and hard to understand what's where. The Giovanni Nakpil's study is awesome! I've been following this guy's thread here on cgtalk. Nice to see 3d sketches, hehe. Never visited his website though and after you mentioning him here I have and damn nice real sculpts there! Amazing guy.
Looking forward to seeing more from you!

thanks for the encouragement.
i will surely do more value studies and hopefully some finished pieces aswell.
about the head sculpt. yeah! it got four eyes (the black ones), but no nose or ears and probally just some kind of lamel-mouth. i used snails/monsters as reference-word. actually just did what i thought looked cool. but you are right, it is too lumpy.

didn't really think of the two actors psysics, while drawing these. it was just to get a few ideas down, to work further from.
i got one or two of these as "favorites" myself, but i'd like to hear your thoughts.

I can understand those superstitions, I've tried to squash that kind of thing, but there is something about that first blank page ;)

Very credible illustration cartooning there Rasmus, very much the images I would expect accompanying an article :). Love the concepts -- a ton of different, but from the same genome, ideas there. Strong outlines, well placed when in action, etc. Great start :D

I like them all but nr1's pose is very dynamic, nr 8 has an interesting suit but nr13 has both of these features :)

the 3D sculpts are awesome too!

kary: thanks alot. yeah! damn you first white page:scream:
about the thumbs. -i had a general idea, with i tried to fight aginst but could always fall back to. which i did a few times.

NR43: thanks for you thoughts on this. really apriciated.

here's a speed paint (well, more or less) from today. really trying to get some more dynamic colors, light and shadow into my drawings aswell as just doing other things than doodles. also trying to learn some of mt many collected brushes a bit better. so this one is done with only two different brushes. one of the, only for erasing sublte dirt.

thanks you two, for the nice words!

elnaz: thank you so much.

anandpg: -hehehhe, thanks. i'll live.
i most diffently think you should give silo a go. silo2 gets better and better for each released beta. also think it's a very good tool for re-topo-ing and quick concept sculpting. a very cool thing is you can continue normal poly modeling (on the lower res)while sculpting. and last, the price almost screams... buy me.
...man, i should be a silo re-seller:)

i've got a small bundle of sketches waiting to be scanned. hope i can find some time soon.

Love that portrait, very loose and a lot of character. Seems like the creature has more bulk then the legs would be able to deal with easily... and while that does happen in the real world it's usually not with the most spry / threatening of folk ;)

It'll be exciting to see where the new comp lets you go :)

Hey Ramsus!!... awesome sculpt, the last one! one little critique: I think the structure of leg is kinda unusual in that it goes from the hip right to the heel joint, missing the knee.. That sort of seems like it might limit his mobility.

Ok, for my taste his skin looks too saturated. But it might really just be my taste, see if anyone else will give you this crit. Other then that I think it's progressing very well. Nice speculars, the model itself is very good. More armor on him would be great to see, like in the update you've posted here few posts back, maybe even more than that. Some story behind this guy could help you design it more easily.

NR43
09-06-2007, 05:54 AM
I think if the enviro is going to be somewhat cartoony, the saturated skin colors may be a good idea. If not, I'd say making them less saturated might increase realism or believability.

It's a great model though. He looks like a recon creature to me, lost on a strange planet. Maybe it's the suit (if you can call it that).

I'm having a bit of an issue with the thing around his neck. I think the dark color is breaking the flow of his anatomy in that area. (the effect of his weird long neck is gone and it also makes him look as if he would have a hard time turning his head, assuming it's a he :D )

Hi Rasmus, your book looks great, lots of nice sketches.
Your models look great too, that snail-man looks really good, though I have to say I like more the unrendered model, I think that if you'r going for a cartoony I personally would prefer a less shiny rrendering, and the eyes don't appeal much too me too.
And what happened with all the other "acessories" he had?
cheers, keep it up
