Great looking sketches you have here, and that painting looks awesome so far! I thinik the forehead looks really nice and rounded, 3d like, try not to loose that quality in the cheeks and rest of the face though.

michael-olszak,
The painting in particular has a lot of impact! :) Good to see some traditional oil painting around here.
Good to see your drawings as well - I think that the main thing I might suggest is being a bit more patient with your lines - don't think that you have to get the line exactly right at first, sort of let your pencil find the line and draw lightly at first until you feel confident that the lines are in the right place. Since lines work in relationship to one another to create form, it's nearly always necessary to lightly place the first lines since they are without relation to anything else yet - once you have the opposite line established, then you can start to reinforce the apexes of the curves and to more firmly establish their relationship. I hope this makes sense. :)
Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks a lot Rebecca. I appriciate your commant a lot. I have this problem that when i start drawing lightly i tend to try to finish the drawing at first try. And indeed patience! i really have to work on that!
Thanks again.

Thanks guys. I attend painting lessons once a week. the cool thing is that the guy who is organizing them doesn't really give you lessons. He just walks around and keeps an eye on things, makes photo's while you paint and if you have any questions or doubts you can step up to him and ask him. Great way of teaching i think. This is my fourth painting I'm really enjoying the making of them. Its kind of like discovering a brand new thing you know. Now i know how Columbus felt like when he discovered America :) :) :)
I try to draw as much as i can in my time at home but you know how it is: Birthday here birthday there, bla bla bla. Anyway i'm glad that i have those two and a half hours in a week that i can just concentrate on Painting.
here is the one i did before the kid.

Hi Michael,
really cool oil paintings. Have you ever tried to carry your traditional skills over to a full digital painting?
michael-olszak
01-18-2007, 10:39 AM
Thanks Mu. Well Yes, but somehow the results are not quite as i would like them to be :(
I think it's becasue i'm not really used to working with a tablet and that i have an el-Chippo Trust tablet. My goal is to to Digital paintings but i need a lot of proctice. I'm really happy that my boss agreed that i can use the tablet as my mouse at work. i figured that since i'm sitting behind the computer all day long that can be the best way to get used to the tablet. i have to say that it's very different but cool (i do proctice a bit during my working day in Open Canvas). But i still need to learn a lot.

Really like that last painting - it would be great to see you do a few self portraits from life - can be a totally different experience (assuming the last image was from reference, sometimes it's hard to tell) - and something you'd probably enjoy. :)

thanks rebecca. i think i will soon but i can imagine that it's not an easy thing to do.
here is my first attempt at the technique from your demo.
The Block in;
http://www.molszak.nl/cgtalk/anatomy1/Picture003.jpg
and the finished thing
http://www.molszak.nl/cgtalk/anatomy1/Picture006.jpg
the problem i keep having is that i tend to over- block my drawings. i always keep putting in small details. And shading, that's also a big problem of mine.
Tips are welcome.

Good stuff! One suggestion I might have is to lay down the basic outlines lightly with pencil at first before reinforcing the guideline drawing with stronger, cleaner lines. Try to be a bit more deliberate if your strokes, but this doesn't mean to draw heavily at first. Build up the lines, drawing in one direction, and reinforce them as your confidence grows.
Keep posting!

michael-olszak,
Good to see your first digital efforts here! :) Just yesterday I wrote up this simple tutorial which I hope may be of use:
TUTORIAL - Quick Apple Painting Tutorial for Beginners (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=470911)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=470911
I also really recommend trying out the skull shading exercise that is linked here in this thread:
Personal Sketchbook Primer and Tutorial / Workshop Guide (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=403198)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=403198
Looking forward to more! Things definitely get easier with practice, be patient with yourself. :)

Very cool update, the whole thing is looking more refined. If I had a crit I would say the eye sockets appear a bit high up in the skull, even given the perspective of the shot I think they might be a bit lower in terms of position - but overall fantastic work. I think your next stop should definitely be a Master Copy for an OFDW or whatever it is you think would challenge and interest you most. :)

Hey there, great to see how much work you are doing.
I'm going to give you a tip that's going to save you about 10 years worth of struggle with life drawing ;) - use Faber Castell Polychromos (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f0/Faber_Castell_Polychromos.jpg/800px-Faber_Castell_Polychromos.jpg) pencils, try some in different colors like blue, red, brown, green, etc. Sharpen them with an electric pencil sharpener. They're fantastic, erasable, and to be honest I have seen students who have appeared to be poor at drawing (because they were using charcoal) magically appear to be good at drawing just by changing their media to Polychromos.
Looking forward to more. :)

Thanks a lot Rebecca It's really an honor to have an artist like yourself visit my SB. I was going to use a charcoal pencil this time cause somehow i really found it frustrating holding a charcoal stick. it just didn't feel right.
I'm totally gonna try those pencils you mentioned tomorrow at the next session. I have a few of them at home which i bought a long time ago but never acrually used.
I'll post my new ones soon. Thanks a lot for taking the time to check out my sb.
cheers.

Thanks a lot NR43. I just need some more finished work to put on it and finally have a freaking portfolio :D
Ok here's something else.
I'm working on a photo montage challange and was wondering if anyone could give me some comments on the creation.
here are the photo's provided.
http://www.molszak.nl/conceptart/pics.jpg
the idea is to make something out of them.
well this is what i've come up with so far.
http://www.molszak.nl/conceptart/Final.jpg
Personally the only thing that i was doubting about was the kat. the sheets he is laying on are white which asks for too much attention so i removed the kat and did some more editing to the piece, I still need to do some contrast/ brightness adjustments but here is the final as i have it now.
http://www.molszak.nl/conceptart/Final1.jpg
If anyone's got any comments or tips on how to make this looks better please share :D
thanks.

Hi,
From using only those photos I think your end result is really quite good! The only thing that stands out to me is the bird looks copy/pasted still. I think perhaps it's because it's lit with the same color tones on all sides of it, maybe add a slight warmer tone to the top part of the bird? I'm not sure what else you could do.
Your figure studies are also really nice and I like that landscape you posted with the waterfall :)

wow man,
It is incredible ! Your sketchbook is so nice !
Long time we don't talk, sorry, I'm finally getting rid off business life a little bit, finally updated my sketchbook btw.
I like the way you did, by shooting the sketchbooks with a camera (is that right ? it seems so), it looks much better than we scan, graphite specially reflects a lot with the scanner and it never shows me the right values.
You have an amazing artwork, really, keep in touch, will follow up better your work.
Cheers,

Are the concepts made from your imagination? Nice! :)
I especially like the house and the afro-hair girl. Her face is so...alive!

Rebeccak - Hey Rebecca, nice to hear from you. Yeah i know, i'll try to work some of them out. Have to do more digital painting anyway.... :D
ForzaInter - yeah man, most of them are. some are studies from photo's but all the creatures, and such are from imagination.
Hey just to let anyone know. I won't be posting in this thread anymore. I have a new sb, the link is below.
