paolodelarosa,
Welcome! :) It's great to see your work for the Torso Challenge, you have a lovely graceful style which will be a pleasure to see develop over the course of the Workshop.
If you wish, please tell us something about your art training and background to introduce yourself to the community. If you would mind reducing the last image to 800 pixel width for posting purposes (so people don't need to scroll) I would appreciate it. I look forward to seeing more of your work! :)
Cheers,
-Rebeccak

Hey rebecca, sorry bout the large post... had it corrected. As for my history, uhhh no formal art training whatsoever, I've been studying anatomy since I was 12, and since I have the attention span of a goldfish, never got to master it through the years, hopefully I could improve my skills having you guys around.
The only proffessional experience I had was with Philippine Animation Studios, didn't last long, but learned a lot.
Thanks

Hi...Paolo....
Real pleasure kooking through your thread....like that last back study alot....strong technique..:applause:
There are a lot of ways to go about painting....one of my favorites is to start with a deep deep
almost black purple background color, that covers the intire canvas.
Work the figure from dark to light....start by blocking in vaguely all the lights and darks of the figure, keeping in mind the values....shades of light and dark....using a big broad brush.
After blocking in the figure with big general shapes of dark and light,...then work into smaller areas, with smaller brushes....saving the final details and lines if required as accents for last....always keeping values...dark and light as your main concern.
Bring the background color into the figure, to define the outter edges of figure, and to creat shadows and atmosphere around figure, and to unite figure with background ect.
This is just one of many techniques of painting though.....the thing I like about this technique is,....it keeps you from falling into that coloring book style of filling in between the lines with color....which is something totally different.
You might try starting with just a very limited color pallet....maybe even just black and white and see how many values ...shades of grey you can bribg out of the darkness, and into the light and the figure....when first trying out this technique...just until you get used to the technique itself....then move on to full color, when you are used to the technique...that is if you decide to try this technique out....:)
Hope this helps you some....looking forward to seeing more of your work....
TAKE CARE

Yeah I've been looking around a bunch of tutorials and try to pick up their style. Most of them have the same technique as you said, large dabs of color of light and dark.. I'm jst having a bit of a problem blending it in and choosing the right colors. Really appreciate your help on this and i will definitely practice on the black and white technique...
Thanks.

No problem. :) Color is tricky. Frankly the best way to learn color is by traditionally painting, in oil - if you ever get the opportunity, I highly encourage you to take an oil painting class. There are also a number of great DVDs out there that can show you the way more than a forum can. But these are good places to start. :)
Cheers,
-Rebeccak
