TheArgylekid 09-15-2006, 03:31 AM What up this is my first comp and first post on cgtalk though I come here quite often. This comp sparked the old interest so I figured I'd give it a whirl. I'm going to go with a female villain. Here's a few concept doodles I did at work. She'll probably get more fleshed out as I model but I figure posting some pics will give me some incentive to see this through to the end.

Nice drawing, but she doesn't really seem to fit the MM world; she's a bit tall and thin, her boots are too slim, as well as her guns, and she's shows to much skin, not enough artificial synthetic, unnaturla skin :P . Although there aren't any women bosses (or characters really, other then Roll and that other girl...who i think is actually in X), i think this reference would help a lot: http://fenrir.finalfantasyq.com/mm/db/index.html . Also, since the name has to end with man or woman, I think she'd have to be named Sniper Woman :P . Looking forward to an update.

I chose to do a female character because of the lack of them in mm, I figured it'd be more interesting. I was thinking more along the lines of Tron Bonne from mm legends. She has slightly more realistic proportions, but I wanted to make her a bit sexier. I have a new concept I'm currently doing and her gear is a bit bigger. As far as woman instead of girl, same difference, someone else put girl as well if I recall, you get the idea. If anyone else feels I'm pushing the boundaries of the comp too much, then I'll change my concept.

likeing the concept, but i have to agree it doesn't look like it fits in the mega man world. Think the larger boots and less skin, or maybe a metalic skin.
Glad to see that you have joined in with us. =)
good luck.

posting again, becuase your second post just showed up. Now you can post like a mad man... =)
As for pushing limits, I think that is really at the core of the challange. Staying within certian boundries and pushing those limits as far as posisble. keep it up. =)
I think it is fine to go passed the design style a bit. As long as legs are metal, arms are metal etc and you have the slightly corny attacks/powers.

Thanks for the responses, its much appreciated. I'm working on a slightly more mm proportioned design which I should have up later today. As for the skin, I plan on it being sort of plasticy and artificial looking with some kind of microchipish overlays. It's not intended to be real skin. Anyway, more progress to come.

i loved this concept, can't wait to see the new version with mm style.

Alright, so here's the newest concept. It's mainly a proportion update and some extra details. I think she fits into the mm world better now and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Let me know what you guys think.

Sniper girl is bitchin!

This is a lot better than your first, as far as fitting in the MegaMan universe. The proportions are much better, but the face and the stockings just aren't working for me, and the arm cannon doesn't seem very sniper-ly, if you know what I mean. Sniper rifles have long, narrow barrels for high accuracy at extreme distances, whereas her arm cannon looks like it could shoot bowling-ball-sized projectiles, that wouldn't be very reliable at a reasonable sniping distance. I think if you went with a sleeker design and a longer, more slender cannon she'd look more like she was actually "SniperGirl". Right now it seems like she's just "HotRobotGirl2156."

I know what you mean about the weapon not being sniperly. Maybe I'll come up with a different name, I like this design and don't really want to change it. The face is just more americanized becuase I don't really know how to draw anime well.

personally i love it. screw the megaman universe it would be a shame to waste such a good concept.

the thing with megaman characters are that they are BLUNT. if this was a sniper woman. she would literally have a n arm as a scope. LITERALLY. And her body would probably resemble a gun of some sort. Really have to get that into the design. Looks good otherwise, but not fitting into mm universe~

Well, I think I'm just going to go with it and see what comes up as I go. New and exciting ideas always come along. Sniper girl was just a working title really anyway. I'm leaning more towards Havoc Girl/Woman. She sports the Catastrophe Canon, a plasma nuke of epic proportions able to obliterate foes in its direct path while causing considerable splash damage.

Woot. Dont' take it the worng way, but that's what concept design is about. Making changes ^-^ Either way, hope it comes out well!

lovin the high heels mega man style haha...good concept. I agree it's not 100% in the artistic style of mega man but it definitely has all the qualities of a mega man character...roll with it imo.
-KDX-
I think it is good to have a deviation from the style and I think this does it pretty good imo. Keep at it.
I want to see some highpoly action going on :) come on guys I crave highpoly models for awesome normals :P J/k you guys choose what you want. Hell sometimes normals do not work in some styles.
I dig the chick.

I hate normal maps with a vengence! :p HATE them. They don't work nearly as well as great textures and smart poly use does.
I havn't seen too much good normal mapping done..

I will agree there are more shitty normal maps floating around than good ones, but... yea... Normal Maps good... learn to use them!

What up all. Figured I'd throw up my progress so far. Just some quick screen grabs. Getting her basic proportions down and what not. Still a little ways to go, but should be finished up soon.

Well, we have an 8k poly limit and normal maps, and I'm not really even close to 8k yet. So, I figure I can spend a few more polys on the face. It's easy enough to go back and remove them if it becomes an issue.

Another update! Pretty much finished her aside from a few details. Zbrushing the hell out of her as we speak. Should have some normal maps up soon, but for now enjoy.

So here's another update. Got a lot of the base normal maps done, obviously the checker parts are still to come. Probly going to keep the textures somewhat toony.http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g315/biggafrica/havocgirlnew.jpg

Lookin' Ace!
Are the vent/flaps on the legs and arms supposed to be angular? If they aren't you might want to add a few more polys to them, they look rather edgy at the moment.
looks awesome so far looking forward to this.
One thing you can do to add details and such for some surface detail is to add a overlayed normal map in photoshop. Even a slight noise converted into normal and placed onto the normal can help on the surface detail. I just hate to see normal maps kind of flat where you have no real detail even though this is mostly metal etc.

Ghostscape: Yeah that was pretty much the shape I was going for, they were supposed to be like plates or something, but I'll see about messing with them.
Ro: That'd be why I said "base normal maps." They aren't finished, this is just the main details.

What up guys,
Here's some new screen grabs. There's no lights or anything yet. Crits are welcome, but I can't promise a whole lot of change from here on since I'm not going to have as much downtime at work. Here ya go.

the model and texture looks sweet but the only grip i have is tht she got to much makeup on her face man lol

The normals on her hips looks odd to me; they look more like weird wrinkles than believable pelvic surface geometry. I know you mentioned (twice, has it been?) that these are unfinished normal maps, so, just something to think about when you're refining, if you didn't plan on it already.
TheArgylekid
10-02-2006, 05:44 AM
I can kinda see what you mean chumble. I may try and get around to fixing it but I'm pretty happy with it. The normals are pretty much done at this point. It's a toony character so I'm not going to go over the top with normal detail. I gave here some surface noise in the normal map to make her look more plasticy. This is pretty much the final peice minus a few touch ups and a nicely lit render. Still, crits are appreciated and I'll do what I can.

Nice concept and model. Everything looks pretty good but I'm also not liking her make up too much. It just seems like too much pink, looks weird when the top of her hair is also heavily pink. My suggestion would be to flip where the pink is in the hair (color her ends instead) or change her make up, give her some nice contrasting colors to her eyelids and/or lips.
TheArgylekid
10-02-2006, 03:25 PM
Yeah I see what you mean about the makeup/hair thing. I actually tried flipping the hair already and I just didn't like it as much as this way. I'll try changing her makeup around. Either removing some blush or changing her makeup altogether. Thanks for the crit I couldn't quite pinpoint what I felt was wrong.

Man youa re really talented and clearly have a lot of experiance here but it doent fit with the art style at all. You might try and redo some of the perportions, get her a little close to 3 heads tall and then make the textures a little more cartoony. One of the greatest things about Mega Man is that the series is cartoony. I'm not saying the model, textures, or normal maps are bad by any means. I just think you should play with the style some. :)

Awesome model, totally something you would see like in a Triple X version of megaman or something.
Is it possible to see a screeny of your unwrap sometime?
also I agree about the overtone makeup, gotta lighten it up a bit.You hand painted your metal or used a actual texture if I may also ask?
TheArgylekid
10-03-2006, 07:37 AM
Thanks for the comments guys!
Kid: yeah I know its not exactly mega man style, and if you look back we've been through that, but I really dug the character and I'm glad I did it.
Sef: Thanks. I'll post textures asap. I used a piece of real metal to create the bumpiness in the normals. The texture is just a solid color with a desaturated version of the normal map overlaid. Then I just went back and darken the cracks and defined the edges using mostly inner and outer glows.
Here's what I did today. I kinda gothed her out and I actually like this better.
Whoa!

I like the model regardless of it not being too megamen style. Gothed out lol Keep at it looking forward to the final.

Thanks Ro. That's kinda what it came down to for me. I really like how this model turned out regardless of the competition. Keep the feedback coming, its helpful even if I don't get to make the changes, just to keep in mind for future models.

Hey, just thought I'd throw up an updated render. This is the final deal, pretty much. I've already moved on to a new model. I had a great time with this comp. Here's a beauty render to keep things interesting.

that is your best render. the charecter looks awsome. i just feal that its not a megaman charecter. not tryin to be a jerk but megamen are smooth and robot like. almost anime but not. you did an awsome job on this charecter though and its a good for a demo real. and mabey a prey charecter for the xbox360.
