well he DID give the DEM extension as an example so I just went on that.

So they have 3d models that can be uploaded into MAX? I didnt know that, please show.

Ok lets see here... The general confusion here lies in the fact he asked for models but gave DEM and USGS as examples of what he's looking for. So I suggested he try USGS' site. I never claimed they had 3d models per say. But they DO have some of (if not THE) best DEM maps out there. Hope this clarifies why I suggested the USGS site.

Lets clarify... U can import USGS data into a 3d app to generate a 3d terrain with it...

Or you could use a program like Terragen and import that into max.

or Dreamscape from the sitni sati guys....if u have it...
makers of afterburn have a plug called dreamscape....
if u do a lot of natural landscape stuff its worh looking at that plugin.almost as valuable as afterburn(in context).
also lets you import your own custom made terragen files with no loss in detail.

well. if u save the terragen terrain, you can simply import it into dreamscape terrain editor.simply make a DS terrain in max.open editor and File: Import Terrain.on the drop down list select the *.ter ext and import it.

I have downloaded Aspen-10M.dem from that site .
When I Imported It to MAX with Dem2MAX import plugin It has got only 7500 polygons .But the file have got 9MB unpacked .
Is all dems terrains have got thal small number of polygons ?
In terragen the same .

Its my works .
Dark tree textures , final render , only begining (test).

Post you Mountains Images .

DEM's is not actually a poly based file format. It's a digital representation of the elevation of each 'unit' of land. Whatever program/plugin you use to import it in controls how fine of a detail it makes the mesh representation of the DEM file. If you can get ahold of a copy of Bryce, It might do cleaner meshes for you. I don't do much terrain modeling so I can't per say which app would give you the best detail.

Sweet man, those look unreal. Don't suppose you could tell me how you textured them? I got the modelling part down and I've got lots of high res textures but I have no idea how to make my images look as realistic as yours.
