Hi everybody. This is my first contribution to this forum. I'm a student (1st Semester) at the German Film School. Together with 4 other students we've finished this clip as a part time project within 10 Days. I was resposible for Supervision, Compositing and Editing.

Here's the new link (8MB DivX AVI):

editing is nice, its a good idea and there's a nice attraction to the product throughout, its a shame that if you pause it you can generally see the way they have been cut-out...

now im guessing manuel goes to your school?¿?

GOOD STUFF
WARNING

:)

I like it a lot. Good stuff.

may i ask a question?

There must be a video basis, how did you made the "draw effect" on it (great color-ink-effect by the way) ?
Is it by filtering or handmade frame by frame ?

maybe it's flicking a bit, but compression does not help of course.
really cool and beyond the actual "Flash" style in animation ;)

cheers

Hi !

Ok here's the Making Of.

First we filmed a professional breakdancer in front of bluescreen with 2 DV Cams and 1 DigiBetaCam at the same time. Then the Video was edited included a few "retime" effects. Next we printed all frames (25 frames per second PAL) and drew a totally new character with pencil and paper over except the shoes.

Then the drawing were scanned and hand colored with 10 Layers in Photoshop frame by frame. If you look closely you will see that every frame is colored different. Thats why we got the flickering effect. We didn't wanna get that clean look you see everywhere. So we put some dirt onto the baclground. Then we tryed to key the shoes from the video sequence. It did not turned out too good because we did not light the bluescreen correct. So we had to cut them out with alpha masks by hand frame by frame. Last we composed (Combustion 2) it all together.

Please notice there's no filter or anything else but drawings and the original shoe used for the clip. Maybe that makes it a little different and special. We handcraftet each frame induvidually, the total of over 500. It's our fist project at The German Film School.
There's more to come........

Well sir. this is Xcellent.

What a job!
I'm ok with you when you talk about clean effect, and i would add that i don't call "post process" a slight glow and a bit of noise!!!

And what you've done here is really well done.

By the flicking effect, i did not talk about colours, background, and work done generally, it rocks.

it's in the "outline" itself (that sounds like a filter...uh... no no!!! i swear i believe you did those drawings!!! pas frapper pas frapper!) .

I had a problem of flicking, on post process with 3d scenes. All the outlines and textures effects, at 25fps, becomes too complex for the PAL resolution.
So i had to find a solution, and... I now have one! Yeah man believe me!

seriously, stretching a 15fps footage fully post processed to 25fps will give better results than filtering a real 25 fps movie.
So now, i don't always render my scenes at 25 fps. Gain of time!

But don't mind!
It's not a problem here, it doesn't have any kind of importance in what you did.
just a tip...

see ya

intresting, sounds like it was a whole lot of work.

There are areas for improvment, but as long as it is not paused it works well.

absolutely awesome. The stutters and increased speed, everything together leading up to the adidas logo, I could definately see this on tv. absolutely awesome.

5 stars. Def Jam :D

Very cool effect, and I'm impressed that you did it all by hand. Must've been hell hehe... But it looks great and that's what counts :)

I liked it. But do you think handdrawing them was the best option for the situation? Would finding a filter of some effect worked better, what's your thoughts on it?
Did you get bored with editing every single frame?

Zastera
01-29-2003, 11:07 PM
Hey Neil,

yes we thought about how to create a unique effect without the use of any filters. It was a whole lot of work and we could only work after the school schedule (9:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.). That means from 5:15 p.m. on through the night. So we all didn't get much sleep during the production time.

yes indeed it was terrible to work on each frame but the result was worth the effort. i hope......

Great color pallette, great cuts and editing.
The motion jumps a bit too much for my taste - I think it could profit from either making the shakiness more pronounced and intended or by smoothing it out.
I also miss the looseness of a drawn animation - its very 'tioght' at the moment. I assume you rotoscoped at the moment. I like rotoscoped stuff, but I think this would profiut by 'flying off the handle' and using the rotoscope to come back into synch with timing.
I'd like to see the source of the dancer being the shoe, having the figure kind of lag behind the shoes a bit - which would justify the hand-drawn direction and push the product more solidly into the limelight.

Its a great portfolio piece at any rate - congratulations!

I really like this. The editing is nice, and it has a professional feel to it. I think one thing that would help is pausing on the last frame a little longer before the logo appears. It seems to "flash" by.

Great job guys,

Its great to see someone out there still can pull of 2D and make it cool. Were you guys planning to pitch this to Adidas or was it a project purely for fun? I believed it was mentioned in a prior thread, but its worth saying again...Its definately good enough to be on television. Keep it up!

Hi !

Sure it would be great if Adidas will show it on TV. We will wait for their reaction. Thank you all for your great comments. Keep posting the Adidas Breakdancer Clip on other commercial sites !

It's definitely something that could be seen on TV.
Only thing that bothers me is that maybe the breakdance session should be a little bit longer, not more than 2 or 3 more seconds... as it is now it cuts right when the interest curve is almost reaching the top. And after the voice says "breakdown!" there should be only some fancy sound effect like a "boom" or something similar, to put the accent on the sudden logo on screen. In my opinion, the actual closing jingle after "breakdown" is totally out of place with the groovy atmosphere of this test-commercial.

Apart from those minor details, I really like it of course!

I like how the focus is on the shoes, maybe an Idea stolen from Lugz!? I dunno, but good job on the still. Downloading movie..........
