I found this awfully cute statue and instantly wanted to model it. So far, this is what' I've come up with. Now what I'd need is tips and suggestions. Plus I need to know how to get shadow/matte -material to work with Brazil. What kind of background would you suggest?

Hi DeCoder!

Since it seems to be your first post, welcome to CgTalk:wavey:

I really like that statue, the modelling seems good as well! The only thing that i think might need a little work is the fingers of the hand, where they bend, they look very sharp, could possibly be smoother.

I don't use Brazil so I can't help you with that bit, but I think what would do this statue a great deal of justice is a little bit of dirt on it, so that it gets a bit more varied texture. (Possibly you've already planned to do this but not got around to it yet)

It this it would look nice in some kind of attic environment, where it's been left 'forgotten', with a little bit of spiderweb on it or something like that.. Just what springs to my mind when I see it.

Anyway, great model! Looking forward to updates!

Yes W-E-L-C-O-M-E (!)

Well done. I love chalk-a-like renderings.

I tweaked material a bit to make it look more dirty. Also did some minor mesh adjustement, but I don't think they're noticeable.

Manicalavera15: I'm not intending to make this a glass statue.
Carina: I like the spiderweb-attic-idea. I think I'm going to make that sitting on a dirty wooden surface and make some spider webs to cover it. Overall dusty look.

i think the nose of the little girl looks a little too sharp though it could be the lighting doing that. Makes it look sorta pointy.

This is looking excellent! I agree about the little girl's nose, but it's just great.

This is absolutely beautiful. And I love the "dusty old attic" scene idea. Go for it!

I have just a few criticisms. First, I see that you have made the statue a little dirtier, however I think it needs more "soft" dirt rather than just the dark speckles that you seem to have added. Subtle, yet larger areas of smudges and dirt on the surface, especially in the nooks and crannies (like between the fingers of both the big hand and the little girl's hand) would go a long way towards making this perfect.

Secondly, the lighting on the base looks a little blown out in parts. The shine could be reduced to allow the details of the texture to shine through. Also, variety of the specularity on the model will help to make some areas look duller and others shiny.

Again, this is beautiful work and I wish you the best in completing it. Regards,

- Me

I agree the nose is a bit sharp.. but then again, this is supposed to be a statue.. and hand made statues are hardly ever perfect.

When using dirt, it's normally a good idea to concentrate the dirt where it would naturally occur, that is less on the flat or rounded surfaces, and more in folds and corners. If you see what i mean.

looking forward to updates!

One wonderful idea. Does this sculpture exist, or is it your own?

it's great, but you shouldnt splash the speckle and noise like bump around, it should be concentrated. though the bump or the texture you have now, it made even a little smaller... it would work well to mae the statue have that plastery-filled with REALLY small holes-look. Im not sure I'm explaining that well, but i do like the image. yellowish or brwonish fades in the corners of thing like they've collected dust would be wonderful. im not very experienced with thi stuff though, im just going by what im thinking, heh. I really like it anyways. update soon :)

Here are the corrections you suggested. Or at least the ones I had time to make.

Yes. I've got that statue as my own. Or actually it belongs to my mom.
It's made of the finest marble, or so I have been told. It is actually very well made with very little cracks and flaws to it, but I just wanted to make it a bit more dusty just to play around with proceduals. Eventually I liked the result. Today I tried to make dirt appear on cracks and holes using falloff, but that wasn't successfull. Does anyone have an idea how to make this?:hmm:
Aerestis: It's all procedual, I cannot see a way to concentrate them.
The other thing I looked into was spider webs. First I considered using a bitmap, but then I realised that there is no way I could get my hands on one in this time of year.
I made a patch with procedual opacitymap and wireframe. It looked pretty nice on material editor but once I rendered it I noticed that brazil rendered it wrong (ignored wireframes). It seems I need to make a webby-like mesh and use that.
I think that I'd like to put this thing into a small wrecked carton box. Currently my tries have failed to excess amount of polys (I'm trying to model the fine details in carton material).

My computer im using is uber dark and this linux system I use won't support high color, heh. So... For all I know, your model's maps are much different. I like the girl's face more now, with that lighting... it seems different to me. But I can't see half of the scene, this screen is so dark. from what I can see anyways, I like the changes I can notice. And of yeah, if it's actually a marble statue, is marble very shiney...? I'm not really sure myself, but the kind of glossy shine with a white-orange kind of material comes to mind. I'm probably wrong, but in my head it looks really nice. anyways, I shouldn't even imagine critting this, it's really great. later then :)

Marble used in this statue is basically a pure white, glossy kind of stone. I'm trying to look into spider webs today. Wish me luck.

Now, this is my second attempt to create spider webs. I used splines with noised opacitymap.
Please tell me how it is coming along. Currently I'm going to put this thing sitting on a wooden box with some attic environment on the background. With DOF and volumetric lightning of course.

I like it. Where did the spider webs go? The depth of field is a bit much.

Web were removed till I get a way to make them look real.
That is just the first render with DOF on. The rendering takes 7 hours so I have to do it at night.

I like the statue very much.
But background needs some work,
'couse those undefined yellow shapes are strongly distracting attention of viewer.
