View Full Version : Vehicle: old toy car!
shoey 01-29-2003, 11:29 AM Along with all my other work going on at the mo i have to do this as well. its an old dinky toy car for animation. the modelling is complete but the textures need a lot of work. thats where you guys step in and help(i'm not the best texturer in the world):D
Here's what i have so far, i've made it in max and trying to texture it using multi-sub textures, is that the best way???
Van model no textures

I've never used Max, so I'm not the one to ask about the "best way"
but that model is looking really good, and for an old toy car...that texture is beautiful!
(a heck of a lot better than my efforts-see below)
it looks old, and it looks like a toy
can't wait to see it fully textured

ok, here's a pic to show you how i'm mapping. i'm using a mix of two uvw planar maps, one from the side(red) and one form the front(blue), i'd also like to get a thifd coming down from the top to stop the stretching there. anyone got any ideas:shrug:

Very nice model, and texture looks very promising. I'd add some reflections and maybe little sharp speculars to this exposed metal.
As for mapping, you could use three UVW MApping modifiers with palanar mapping and three different texture channels (I think it was texture channel, or something like that, haven't used max lately) and maybe not multi-sub object but Mix (again, don't remember exactly), which allows you to layer materials atop each other and use masks...
hope this helps ;)

cheers for the kind words guys:thumbsup:
been messing around with a few different mapping techniques for the last few days and i've settled on blend textures. here's a quick update, there are no spec or bump maps yet, just diffuse(and that's not finished yet, as you can see):bounce:

You could use a small bump map to put some distance between the paint and the metal undern it. Looks good otherwise.

wow, i must say the texturing is great. it looks exactly like a worn out matchbox car. anyone know the brand "matchbox"? don`t know if it`s german.
great model, also.

I really like that, I think it's really toy-like. Well I like your work as well, you do really cool stuff. Well... is your mapping on your hood ok? I love your textures, but maybe some bump that looks really plastic would help? You be the judge in th end, but thats an idea. It needs to look really produced-plasticy or old metally. So far it make sme think of an old tin care kidn of thing, which is coming along greatly. I'll look at your updates =) Make the tires look like old dry rubber =) wait, nevermind my plastic idea, hehe. i think its supposed to be metal then? hehe awesome, later. Check out my wip, its the joan of arc inspired thing. :)

fantastic!
I agree with the bump map (keep it very very subtle if at all)
otherwise, I'd say stick with the dull grey metal, I remember some old matchbox cars at my grandparents house (they were my uncle's cars)..these were at least 25 years old and some looked almost exactly like yours!
..strogoff, matchbox and hotwheels are both owned by mattel..pretty much one in the same

Thanks alot for all your comments guys:thumbsup:
The car is going to be metal and its going to have rubber wheels. I've done some more work on the diffuse map, there still is'nt a bump map or spec map on it(i'm working on them at the mo):wip:
here's the new diffuse map

Most of the car has sharply defined boundary between paint and metal, but in some places there's strange bluring... is this intentional? And You sure don't want to add subtle reflections to the metal? 15% or so?
Some cracked, matted plastic windows would look nice...;)
Very nice, but I said that before...;)
