View Full Version : Xbox 360 with built-in HD-DVD drive in 2007
ChewyPixels 09-13-2006, 03:03 PM Microsoft to offer Xbox 360 with built-in HD-DVD drive in 2007.
http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20060913A6035.html
"Microsoft has started designing a new-generation of Xbox 360's equipped with an internal HD-DVD drive and is selecting manufacturers in Taiwan to build the drive, according to sources in Taiwan's optical disc drive (ODD) industry. Microsoft will offer an external HD-DVD drive for its Xbox 360 at around the end of this year, in an attempt to compete with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will have a built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive, the sources indicated. The external HD-DVD drive, however, can only play back movies, the sources noted.
If the process of selecting partner makers and subsequent certification goes smoothly, Microsoft may launch the Xbox 360 equipped with the built-in HD-DVD drive in the first half of 2007 at the soonest, the sources noted."

I am glad I sold my 360 recently. I had a feeling this was going to happen , not to mention the quite possible price drops and bundles around november.

I have my 360 still (and seriously, I've only ditched a select few consoles) but I knew this would happen. I play my 360 mainly for Saint's Row nowadays. The writing is sooo bad, it jumps into the "hilarious" category.
It's almost as if the writers stopped to talk to each other. "Blacks say this stuff, right?"

I hope they keep the price the same and maybe drop the price of the regular dvd console.
From what I've heard HD-DVD and blu-ray discs take forever to load and the picture quality is marginally better than a well produced DVD on a player that has "upres" features.

as an owner of a HD-DVD player i can say that the quality is much much better than upconverted dvd, i can't speak for blu-ray but i would think the quality is probably the same as
HD-DVD. yes the load times are awful.

and that is what happens when you rush out your console. MS is just hurting itself in the end. Not to say sony is doing any better but at least it is coming pre-equipped with a blu-ray drive :p

Why on Earth would you do that? It wasn't because you wanted to get a 360 with an HD-DVD drive built in it, right?
The only reason I can see that it was possibly bad to be an early adopter is if the console ends up using the HD discs for games, rather than only movie playback as MS has stated over and over. If the external drive is a descent price ($200 doesn't sound that bad) and it plays HD movies without any hicups, I don't see what all the fuss is about.
As far as people who say they're glad they waited, I don't really understand that either. I've had a lot of fun playing 360 games since January and it didn't matter whether the games were on HD-DVD or Blue Ray discs. Ghost Recon, Oblivion, Fight Night, Dead Rising, etc... were all a blast on DVD-9.

Weird, my friend just got back from Best Buy and said he saw Blu Ray on a LCD TV. He said it was insane and went on and on about how amazing the picture was. I think his exact words were, "people are going to flip out".

Yea I went to check out blueray at the sony store here too and it does look amazing , so do HD-DVD. Upressed dvd's are nowhere near the quality you can get with BR and HD-DVD.
@sephcor: well i believe there will be a price cut\bundle very soon. Also there is no game that interests me between dead rising which i beat already and gears of war. If MS doesnt come up with something good come ps3 launch time I would rather go with ps3 and have a blu-ray player on the side.

This may suprise you but not everyone plays the same games. Period.
While you may have been impressed with Ghost Recon (Mexicans kidnap the president... Ubisoft's opinion of the US is really that low), I thought it was just a more technically advanced variant of the same boring squad based action games I got tired of before even SOCOM came around. Likewise, if I wanted Doom the RPG, I would get past the hour 5 barrier on my copy of Oblivion (which, provided PS3's launch sucks, I may end up doing anyway). Fight Night? Boxing... moving on. And Dead Rising? I wasn't impressed, sorry.
Out of the 11 games I own for 360, only 4 have been played to completion (although I do plan to revisit Kameo here pretty soon). That's Chromehounds, Tomb Raider Legends, Saint's Row (finished but now I'm aiming for 100%), and DOA4 (oh how I yearn for VF5). Most of em can't keep my interest. But I keep the console around mainly because I know the moment I sell the thing is the moment some games I'm truly interested in gets announced.

You sound so jaded, you might as well give up on all the consoles.;) You're right about to each his own though. I wouldn't touch Chromehounds, couldn't get past "hour 5" on Laura and DOA4 wasn't my cup of tea either. If waiting is about cost, than yea, that makes sense. If it's about waiting for the best game you've never played, well that's like waiting to win the lottery.

Here's the thing I don't think you guys are understanding.
A Blue Ray player costs about a grand. An HD DVD player costs 500.
I can get a PS3 for 600, and I can get an external HD DVD drive for no more than 250 bucks,
because I've been told it will be a lot less money becuase it uses the Xbox system for certain things that the HD DVD player does.
Also, why is this bad for X-Box, what is wrong wtih the HD DVD availability, and how is that a bad thing?

It's bad because MS is essentially giving a big "f*ck you" to the consumers by saying one thing and then doing another. It's very obvious they admire Nintendo because they do exactly as they do, actively repackaging the same hardware.
Microsoft didn't want to take any hit for a chance on HD DVD from the start, Sony is halting the launch and lowering amount of consoles to take the hit so that consumers in the end will get everything, not having to sell and rebuy a year later because of something they can't possibly control.
It's too early to see if it will have any effects, but as mentioned in the thread, I had the same expectations about the included HD-DVD drive and I'm happy I never did buy the 360. Now I definately won't until MS gets their own stuf figured out and starts to refocus on the consumer.

I got Chromehounds mainly because I was aching for a mech game. Period. Never said I prefered it and the stuff shown on Armored Core 4 and Gundam World has me looking forward to better mech action in the future. The ones I didn't finish and why...
Prey- Rarely do FPS games and this one feels too much like a Doom 3 clone. I want to finish it eventually though just because of the really cool spacial stuff they do. It's just a matter of getting motivated enough for the game or rather, back into an FPS mood.
PD0- Horrible story, tacky gameplay, the feeling of running through solid mud... yeah, it's a good thing I only paid $10 for this.
Kameo- I need to finish it. Seriously. Tomb Raider distracted me on this one and haven't gotten back in.
Ridge Racer 6- Ridge Racer on PSP had much better pacing. On 6, I feel like I'm chipping away on a mountain until completion. Added to the fact that most of the cars are only unlockable online.
Burnout Revenge- Racing games in general are a casual affair for me. I'll get around to it eventually but forcing time trials isn't winning any favor in my book. Seriously. Time Trials are the most boring racing game mode since Gran Turismo.
The Outfit- Seriously, would you play this crap all the way through? When I want to laugh at a shitty game, I pop this in.
Oblivion- As much as I want to get into this game, I don't care much for FPS games in general. Let alone wandering a huge world with tons of quests just fells rather unfocused for my tastes. I know, I'm a bastard. But the main thing that annoys me about this game is the art style itself. It's just so bland and ugly. Technically, it's awe inspiring but things like Disgaea, WOW, and Zelda have an art style that sticks with you for a while. At least me.
And despite acting like a snob, my game collection is quite sizable. Truth be told, any rhythm game is my weakness, especially when it's loaded with super cheesy music liek Gitaroo Man or DJ Max Portable. That, and I prefer darker third person action games like God Of War or Devil May Cry. And RPGs. I promise you, if I ever provide a link to my game collection, you'll find stuff in there and say "he plays THAT?!?"

Whats was everyones problem anyway? (even though it was a rumour)
Now you have the choice? Hd dvd drive or no hd dvd drive. I know what im choosing. No hd dvd drive.
I play my 360 regularly on my friends 56" hd tv. it looks very nice, but i dont feel the need to watch movies at this res. I have a monitor in my room for when i play games at HD. I cant afford a HD telly myself so I dont give a damn about high res films. I think its all a crappy gimmick. Its too expensive to adopt now. Lets see how many families and parents start taking this HD idea on. Id like to see people try and rip DVDs out of people hands in favour of a new fan-dangled medium.
Im glad 360 has no HD drive because it has made it cheaper. Also it made the console actually come out. I would have lost my mind if i couldnt play next gen games even until now. I have fully satisfied my urges for next gen content. I have seen huge crowd scenes, real time HDRI, high poly normal mapped characters etc... I badly needed to see this and now i have. And am happy :)
PS, fight night is such a kick ass game. One of the most addictive games of recent times. From playing my 360 version, iv even managed to get one of my casual gamer friends to go and buy a full wireless router kit just so you can play online on his psp. hes fallen in love with it. (even though he admits its not as good as 360. very laggy unresponsive play)

You sold your 360 because you knew this was going to happen? The price drop is going to be small. Not enough for you to have made a profit on. And the hddvd drive is ONLY for move playback. I thought you liked your 360.
