Hi All,

Thought I would post a WIP I am working on just now. Its a large crawler crane from liebherr photo and progress shot included below:

Will post more updates and any comments/crits appreciated.

Best regards

Now that's a big crane ... are those weights hanging off of the back?

It is difficult to tell scale, but some of the flat surfaces seem to be a little thin.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to the finished model,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your post and yes they are counter weights on the rear of the carriage. Also has an articulated back ballast wagon loaded with weights too. Another small update...

Bit more work on it last night. Getting the main winches in position and building up the load bearing chassis.

Itching to get started on the booms!!!

Another wee update.

Spent time figuring best way to quickly add tracks as I plan to do a series of these models. Lots of tips and coffee setups out there but thought I would post a quick walkthrough to create the tracks shown below. Quick and easy and think they look OK.

Stage 01
First start with a parametric cube. Set width height and thickness to your chosen values (i've used 1950mmx400mmx60mm here). Fillet and subdivde along its width. Select one half and delete.

Select a series of alternative fillets in way of a subdivide and extrude 0mm (maintain groups checked) then move using shift to snap to nearest 10mm (50mm used below). This gives a nice detail that meshes the tracks.

Stage 02
Next select the last three panels and scale down (ensure slect only visible unchecked). Work your way to the end to taper to a narrower termination.

Stage 03
Then mirror (ensure tolerance set to a reasonable amount). Check size of new object and round to sensible figure (i.e. in sample below changed the width of 1488.56899 to 1490mm).

Stage 04
As a final tweak grabbed the two ends and raised them on the Y axis by 50mm to give a nice taper. In the final render below you can see the far ends of the tracks get a nice profile from this. Change the min angle setting int he phong tag to emphasise the edges too (used 50deg in my model).

Stage 05
Align with your spline profie of the track bed.

Stage 06
Drop both under a Jenna iterator and the default settings give the following. Not nice.

Stage 07
Change transform to 0%.

Stage 08
Under "Path" check "use path" and "tangential" and change distribution to "fit length".http://www.naval-architecture.co.uk/images/ext/tracks09.jpg

Stage 09
You may need to rotate the local axis of your object to get the right alignment along the spline. Trial and error works best but usually a single rotation of 90deg about relevant axis does the trick. Change the number count in jenna's iterator to fill in all the gaps.

Complete
And you should be left with this...

There you have it. 10 min tank tracks...

Spent a little more time on this model. Working on the lower section of the main lattice boom and added the cab.

Slowly getting there...

Comments etc welcome and really starting to like C4D for modelling.
