View Full Version : Wings3D's "connect" tool in Maya or XSI?

I really love the "conncet" tool in Wings3D(you select verts and hit "connect" to connect them, thus adding edges). Are there plug-ins that does the same thing in Maya or XSI?

Wings3D's "cut" tool is also excellent.

The only thing that pervents me from using Wings3D exclusively is that I actually like having Manipulators. Also, some tasks in Wings3D takes too many clicks. Example:

To move a vert in Wings3D, I need to:
1)select a vert
2)right click for move
3)click again for move choices
4)click again to select a move choice
5)move your vert
6)click one last time to exit move tool.

In Maya:
1)select a vert
2)hit "w" for translation tool.
3)move your vert

That's 3 steps less. Also, once I hit "w", I can select more verts to be moved. I can't do that in Wings3D.

Try the tweak tool, it's in the tools menu. To use it just click and drag as many times as you want and right click to exit the tool. Also you can assign shortcuts to any command in wings so no tool is more than a keystroke away :o)

In the MJ Poly Tools Plugin for Maya... there is a Connect Verts/Edges/Faces command that will allow you to ...for example

Pick two Vertices and then press Connect Verts/Edges/Faces....and it will connect them with a New Edge...Like your looking for. I too loved that tool in Nendo and in Wings, and was very happy to find the option available to me in maya with the MJ Poly Tools Plugin

you can find the plugin here.

http://www.maya3d.dk/Scripts/MJPolyTools/

hope that works for you!

BazC- Hehehe, the Tweak tool breaks the vert away from other edges connected to it---not exactly desirable in my situation... :)

Projectkmo- Oh crap, how did I overlook THAT??? Thanks! I've had MJ Poly Tools installed for months now...

huh? all tweak does is move verticies...doesnt break up anything. its exactly the same as you having to hit W in maya to move a vertex. unless you have double edges it will break em apart. but if your model is solid you should be fine. ( unless you mean something else )

also. you can add hotkeys to translations. ( for example free move ) then if you need to constrain that move to an axis..say XyZ you can use shift.

hey lun! somtehing sounds wierd with your tweak tool ? are you using the latest version
basicly the tweak tool is just for grabing verts and pulling them around like lightwaves drag toll kinda like wrking with clay

Whoa dude! It looks like the problem is my model. My model is one of those "hollow shell" types. I guess Wings3D's Tweak only works on solid models. Grrr...

actually wings fills the hollow shell upon importing. thats why the problem is either with double edges...or a really bad export job? where the each poly is unwelded? did you use obj? or dxf? or what? but i can tell you it works fine if you got a clean model ;)

I think the general modeling principal of wings only works on solid surfaces.

In XSI you'd use split edges.

You can set up hotkeys for all your various transforms in wings. Tweak_ s plugin (still not updated for current version) allows you to perform tweak on edges and polygons.

Be sure to try the tweak tool with the magnet turned on (you have to have advanced mode turned on)

I exported in .obj, and I tried it with both Maya and Xsi. The version from XSI that hasn't been through Maya works fine with Tweak. I must have unwelded verts that are hard to see when I used Maya's lame Split Polygon Tool(gotta collapse those verts all the damn time). I ****ing hate that tool, but it works better than other melscripts that try to do the same thing... Why is it that many times I can't get that tool to actually place a point, but if I started from another edge and place the same point where I initially couldn't, it then works?

Ah! If I understand you correctly your having problems with Tweak on imported meshes. This is a known issue, I have heard of problems with importing from Lightwave and Maya. Sometimes the mesh gets split up on import. Tweak isn't splitting the mesh it's already split it's just that you can't see it! Try working on a simple mesh created in Wings from scratch and see how great the Tweak tool really is!
Hopefully this problem will get resolved cos I'd like to use Wings with Lightwave. In practise though it's not that big a deal as you'd probably be moving from Wings to another app which is problem free! In my opinion Wings excells in quickly creating The basic model, you'd work in another app to add morphs maybe tweak fine detail. I don't have much experience in modelling in any app but I get the impression that the bigger name apps deal with high poly counts better than Wings but that maybe my weedy little computer!

Ya, it appears to be an import issue specific to LW and Maya. I tried models from LW and Maya and they all were screwed up, but works fine on meshes from XSI's obj export, or models created in Wings.
