"Luc Besson, director of the "The Professional" and "The Fifth Element," says his latest movie will be his last. The French filmmaker said Monday that he intended to devote himself instead to civic projects, including starting a foundation to help youths in France's depressed inner cities.

Besson's 10th and last movie, "Arthur et les Minimoys," opens in France on Dec. 13.
"They are my 10 little babies," he told RTL radio. "I love them all. I am pleased to have completed this cycle. That is finished."
Besson, 47, said he was keen to try his hand at a whole array of new projects."

I applaud his commitment to public service... but I really hope that he makes more films. He's become one of my personal favorites. Each time I re-watch one of his movies, I "get it" a little bit more. Not often, does a filmmaker deliver like that.

 Even though I haven't liked some of his latest films, he's still one of my favourite directors, and I have quite a few of his films in my dvd collection and in my list of favourite films.

It's great that he has a dedication to a good cause, but I do hope he'll make more films in the future.

He had always said that he'd make only ten movies.
I hope he won't stop cinema at all and he will continue to produce young directors.

I guess thats Leon 2 out the window then :(

I'm not quite convinced though that he'll never make another movie, I can't believe a passion for stoytelling such as his can be just shuttered away without good reason (which doesn't seem to be the case). Certainly a shame if it is the case.

The man's a genius... such a pity.
But I think he may end up being a writer and/or producer for other up-and-coming directors. He's got 32 writing credits and 76 producing credits to date. Like blipper, I doubt that he can stay away completely from storytelling forever.

:\ Too bad, I really like his work. Would have wanted to see several more Luc Besson movies.

Considering his only movie i really liked was Nikita i can't say i'll miss him that much. Good to see he'll refocus himself on civic projects tho.

I liked Leon and Le Grande Bleu - his other films never really spoke to me and I really dislike those minimoys designs, so I'm also not really sad about it but it's always good to see someone doing something for charity.
