View Full Version : Vehicle:Subaru Impreza
Shimano 01-29-2003, 01:17 AM Hey, here's my Subaru Impreza. The background is a photo of my back alley. I'm from Canada can't you tell :p
This was all done in Maya and Corel using Mental Ray and an HDRI reflection / lighting map that I photographed and assembled in HDRshop. I painted the shadows on the ground manually. I'm not really too satisfied with them tho. Anyways, critiques welcomed.

Well done...........
Can post a wire frame of your model????

well if you just add some snow on the tires of the car, and in the reflections then it would be perfect...but really nice model..

looks nice...the first pic I think the shadow side of the car needs more shadow...especially around the wheels is where you can see what I mean....that whole side. They are too bright to be on the shadow side of the car (side closest to us in the pic). I also agree on the blurry wheels in some pics. they could also be a tad bit dirty'r in the first 2 pics. The shadow in the second pic I think should be crisper...look at the shadows down the road...they are farther away from us but are crisper than the ones closest to us that you drew in. All in all though good job with the model, I love these cars. Keep working on it and it will look even better, it's almost there.
I agree, the model looks great, as well as your texture/shader mats.
But your comp(real footage) res is diff than the CG res, and you would also need to add snow, frost, condensation, steam, ice...all of the little details that would bring it to life.

Here's a wireframe.
I agree that it's a little blurry. Kinda makes it look out of place. Maybe cause I added some noise to it and shrunk it down. I'm also not that happy with the way the rims look in the first 2 images. Kinda looks like plastic or something.

Awesome :)
The first pic turned out quite good.... though the car seems a bit 'soft' , but it comes very very close to realism :)
Good job and keep up tha' works !!! :bounce:

First of all a it's a very nice model
The Car looks a litle like a Dodge Neon
So, now some crit. points:
- I see a bright blue sky. But the reflection don't show it. Try to fix that.
- I see U drive with slicks on snow?? How about to use spikes?
-Taillights are fake? Looks so.
- I can see Jpeg Artifacts inside the textur. Havn't U cleaned the texture maps?
-The Shadow. Like b.Schulz already wrote. Try to draw or render a better shadow.
-And add some snow to lower parts and wheels...
Okay now I'm finished

You have the best rubber material i have ever seen on those tyres. Wow! Is it all procedural or did you use photographs?
Nice model, just work more on the comp :-)
Why don't you just put a matte plane under the car so that you have the shadows rendred for you? In 3ds max it's pretty easy, don't know about maya though...
Keep up the good work!

Very cool I like the first picture best!! The sun reflections and shadows are really cool!!!!

Yeah,
the first picture is definantly the best.
My only idea would be to check the blacklevels of foreground and background. It seems to me that there's to much contrast in the car.
But just an idea.
Looks very good. Especially the one with your back alley. Great work!

Thanks for all the great tips guys!
Daniel, I'm glad someone noticed the asphalt tires! lol
The truth is I was planning on either building a road environment for it, or remodelling dirt tires and photographing a dirt road, but next thing I new it was snowing! The jpg artifacts are from compressing the final image really small so that my buddy wouldn't mind me taking up some of his web space. I assure you that all the textures were re-drawn and are very sharp 1K - 2K uncompressed files. I tried to make the reflector textures from scratch. It even has refractions on. Was having a hard time trying to get it to look right tho.
I'll pump up the reflections a bit too and definately re-work the shadows.
The tire texture is a combo of files and procedurals. Mostly, I mapped noise into the specularity as well as multiplied it with a ramp to have it increase depending on the facing ratio. It was turning into a really messy shader. Glad it was appreciated.
Anyways, keep the Critiques coming!

Awesome!!!
I just started this car from that Bliss 3-d tutorial, I hope mine turns out half as good as yours.
I think you need to scale up the car a bit, especially noticeable in that back shot of the car... looks too small.
In the first pic I think your car paint needs to be glossier - sharper highlights.
It's looking realllly good though - especially the tire material :applause:

Looking good :) Only a few comments for the first pic.
The car is way too saturated. If you look at the background plate you took there are no colours that saturated anywhere in it. So desaturate it a bit. Also I think it might have a little too much contrast.
I went into photoshop and changed those things and it blends in much better.
I think it was mentioned above, but it would help if you had the blue sky reflecting in the car. Oh and try to get the tires of the car to sink a half inch or so into the snow. That will really help the integration. Maybe put some snow on the car and old road salts. Nice work though.
The shadow in the second pic is kind of weird but in the first one it is spot on. I think that is just because you painted it in yourself and its more complicated in the second picture.
But overall good job. Nice modeling :)
Damn! That's some good modeling skills you've got there!
Love that car. Can I ask you were you got the blueprints for the 2002 WRX? I've look every were to find these.
What's your work flow? Splines, loft or bi-rails, switch to poly, and add some details after?
For my part no crits to add. The others did the job!
Can wait to see some up-dates!
Nice job!

I modelled the car from images that I found just searching on the internet. But when I was nearly finished, I finally decided to look up the site that's printed on the side of the car. www.swrt.com (http://www.swrt.com) and holy crap are there tons of amazingly high res photos! So I ended up going back and adding more detail and fixed some other things.
Anyways, my process is quite similar to that tutorial on
http://www.munkmotion.com/tutorials/nsx/
in that I trace the car in 3d using curves before I start making the pieces. The only real difference is that since I'm referencing off real photos instead of orthographic blueprints, it's important to use perspective cameras for your front and side views by trying to match the focal length and position of the camera the best you can. Otherwise, your proportions will never match in both views. I find this little tip very useful when modelling anything off of photos, especially faces. So for anyone whose tried modelling a face using a photo in your orthographic front view and wondered why it ended up looking a little strange, that's probably it.

since you said that you went to swrt i assume that the dirt made it hard to see some of the detail:p Here are some other good "clean" shots of the car, if you want to go back and make sure everything is correct.

Nice model dude, scene looks good.
Looks pretty clean, my biggest crits are that some of the shots are blurry on the WRX, the lighting doesn't match too well, and some of the materials/shaders look too plasticy, i.e. the rims and body.

I've made a couple minor tweaks based on a lot of the suggestions I've been getting.

Nice improvement!
Look better with the winter tires+ the little snow on them! Now you should try to dirty it up a bit. Maybe some dirt+slush on the side panels and in the front cause it looks like it's just coming out of the car wash???
Another small point is that weird white fuzzy reflection on the front wing and bumper? Last thing for me, you should add some more res on the wing. It's a bit jagged!
Did you work on the interior a bit?
Once again great job Eric!

Very impressive work! :applause: :applause:
Maybe it would be nice if you put some mud on the car. Caused bij driving. And maybe, it might be a little darker under the car.
But, I keep impressed by this work. Good job

Awesome model. You should try adding a surface shder under the car. It may help you with the shadow.
