is it worth the money, if i use 3dsmax 8 and waiting for "real" lighting tips. i think the quality of my images lack really about my low lighting skills.
Or could you tell me a better one?
thx

Birns' book ''Digital Lighting and Rendering'' is a great book but its not about 3dmax...its about lighting and rendering techniques. every person who is aimed to achieve smth in 3d got to have it.

Remember one thing its not about the software its all about lighting methods... and solid fundamentals and patience and passion to make things look beautiful is the key for good lighting....

I have that book you linked to. It's OK, majorly drab though. I suppose if you wanna take your work to the next level.

I looked through most of that book and read many of the sections at the conference bookstore, and based on that I would not buy it. It looked similar to Brooker's earlier "Essential CG Lighting Techniques" book that I ordered a few years ago, but don't recommend. What he did say about lighting appeared to have been largely copied from other books. A real beginner could find some value in it, but it really doesn't tell you much about how to light, and the Max-based stuff added to his latest book looked weak and didn't cover much more than a page or two on most of the optional renderers like Mental Ray, VRay, Final Render, etc.
I agree with most of the other posts here that Birns "Digital Lighting and Rendering Second Edition" is a better buy, especially since Birn did that terrific new second edition that just came out.
